Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has a new column up, and he addresses a few topics of interest from around the majors. Some highlights....
- Cafardo examines the crossroads that superstars Albert Pujols and Joe Mauer will soon face with their current clubs. He passes on this quote from one baseball official: "I think Mauer has a better chance of staying in Minnesota than Pujols
in St. Louis. Mauer is from Minnesota,
while you have to give Pujols an A-Rod type contract and I’m not sure
the Cardinals would do it."
- His source thinks that the best way for the Cardinals to keep Pujols in St. Louis is to continue showing him they're committed to going after championships by making moves like this year's Matt Holliday acquisition.
- Cafardo sees "no downside" to the idea of Holliday patrolling left
field in Fenway next season. From an on-field standpoint, that statement could apply to virtually every team in the league, but the Red Sox are probably one of the few clubs that could absorb the financial blow.
- Johnny Damon could be a good fit in the south side of Chicago, according to Cafardo. The White Sox will be looking for a leadoff hitter, and it's still unclear whether or not Damon will be back in New York.
- Casey Kotchman may not fit into Boston's plans next year, but Cafardo thinks he could also be a solid addition to the White Sox -- especially if Chicago doesn't retain Mark Kotsay.
- Cafardo wonders why a power-hitting right-hander, like the New York
Mets covet, would want to play in Citi Field, which he calls a "death
valley" for righties.
"Cafardo wonders why a power-hitting right-hander, like the New York Mets covet, would want to play in Citi Field, which he calls a "death valley" for righties."
Citi Field was 12th in baseball in HR/game, its really not as bad as people make it. Busch Stadium was more worse, yet I didn't see Matt Holliday have much of an issue hitting there.
Plus Cafardo is forgetting something called "money".
Posted by: Baseball Nut | November 01, 2009 at 11:04 AM
Actually, Carfardo should be wondering why a RH power hitter would want to play at Fenway, where the HR/game total was worse than Citi Field.
Posted by: Baseball Nut | November 01, 2009 at 11:05 AM
I think the big question becomes if the Cards think they can't get Pujols to sign the extension, do they trade him?
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | November 01, 2009 at 11:17 AM
Mauer will be with the New York Yankees. Bank on it.
Posted by: snowjev | November 01, 2009 at 11:25 AM
1) Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't Citi Field be worse for a left-handed power hitter. That Models alcove along with the distant rightcente field fence makes left field look like a banbox.
2)Good point baseball nut, money is the key. Holliday is a bit of a mercenary, so give him his 5-6 year contract.
3) Citi Field is not the homerun killer everyone thinks it is. Its just that the Mets had no power in the lineup0. Beltran was doing fine as far as power before his injury.
Posted by: diehardmets | November 01, 2009 at 11:31 AM
Somebody should tell Cafardo that Pujols went to high school in Missouri.
Posted by: deeco3307 | November 01, 2009 at 11:39 AM
@snowjev
I think the Yanks will be set at C. Jesus Montero should be ready in a year or two.

odd that all the teams and supporters of teams that desperately want pujols say that he won't resign even though he says he plans on it.

"odd that all the teams and supporters of teams that desperately want pujols say that he won't resign even though he says he plans on it."
And odds are all Cards fans or all fans who want Pujols to stay put will say he plans on resigning. We all know the tap dance by now, 9 times out of 10 when you're an above average player coming close to FA you make some kind of statement in an interview about how much you love the city, the fans, and how much you really want to stay. Point being, I'll believe Pujols wants to stay when he signs an extension, until then all is speculation.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | November 01, 2009 at 11:58 AM
True enough, purple. Teixeira 'loved' the Angels and hoped to stay; 'loved' his home town Baltimore where he grew up and hoped to play there; 'loved' the idea of being the heart of the Nats as they developed a contending team right near his home town; 'loved' playing in Atlanta near his wife's family; but he loved the money. However, Pujols has been saying he wants to stay home in MO even before Mauer said he wants to stay home in MN. Alot depends on your family, your mind set, the fans, and your agen$.
Posted by: gerald troy | November 01, 2009 at 12:08 PM
As a White Sox fan, Damon does not interest me. I'd like to stay away from aging veterans.
Posted by: striker | November 01, 2009 at 12:15 PM
Of course somebody from Boston thinks Pujols will leave.
Posted by: catch212 | November 01, 2009 at 12:22 PM
I actually wouldn't mind damon on a 1 yr deal
Posted by: kcatlantis | November 01, 2009 at 12:29 PM
catch212,
That's a pointless comment. of course a writer from a big market team is going to state that a player with potential to be a free agent who's going to get big bucks is going to leave their current team. It's just like everyone from New York from the past few years saying how K-rod was going to be a yankee and take over for mo when he retired. Try posting something with a little more substance and not obvious annoying comments. If you have such a problem with it, don't read the sports news.
Posted by: turnthe2 | November 01, 2009 at 12:30 PM
Carfado:"while you have to give Pujols an A-Rod type contract and I’m not sure the Cardinals would do it."
Why should a terrible contract be a benchmark for anyone? Unless Pujols signs with the Yankees, A-Roid should have nothing to do with it. The Yankees are playing with different money than everyone else. It is simply absurd to hold them up as a market standard.
Posted by: Monroe Says | November 01, 2009 at 12:31 PM
A-Roid. Never heard that one before.
Damon makes a lot of sense in Chicago, IMO. Put him in as the DH and they could get a .360+ OBP out of the leadoff spot, and the DH spot would probably keep his legs fresh so he could steal 20+ bags. If they can get him on a 1 year deal, he does make a lot of sense.
Posted by: R y a n | November 01, 2009 at 12:41 PM
A couple of weeks in an interview, Pujols came out and said that he wants to stay as a Cardinal and that it is not about the money but competing. Either way, Pujols is staying as a Cardinal and sorry to make anybody upset. MLB needs a salary cap because of these huge money contracts.
Posted by: mutiger68 | November 01, 2009 at 12:49 PM
Damon would most likely sign as a rotating DH wherever he signs. That is probably why he would be a good fit for the Sox, he and Pods would rotate as DH's Lf's and Leadoff hitters. This leaving Rios in center and CQ in RF where his defensive talents will shine the most.
Posted by: Bob Loblaw | November 01, 2009 at 12:58 PM

Pujols isn't leaving. All the other clubs would love to have him and pay him dumb amounts of money, but he don't want to be a big fish in a big pond. Tell me what other club competes year in and year out on the salary the Cardinals do that Pujols can still look like the monster that he is?
Posted by: jaybuck | November 01, 2009 at 01:03 PM
Oh and all this talk on this thread is about Jonny Damon? lol Johnny Damon? He is average at best, never been a real scary player, and might I add needs a speech class or two.
Posted by: jaybuck | November 01, 2009 at 01:06 PM
i could live with damon at DH if he's willing to DH 90% of the time and sign for less than $10M/yr. You can pencil him in for 20 HR at US cell. Yanks might keep him though.
Posted by: 2HeadedBoy | November 01, 2009 at 02:05 PM
Jaybuck,
Your an idiot... If you need comments on a website to satisfy your needs you are a sad man. All Cardinals fans are is Cubs fans with a ring.

But were better than the average cubs fan because we have 10 rings. Or was that too cliche?
Posted by: from FIRST to THIRD | November 01, 2009 at 03:11 PM
Holliday wont be on the Sox roster, Boras main reason.
I think Bay get an absurd contract from someone, so I'm not counting on that.
I think if anything Sox try to bolster their pitching, look for catching help, as a possibility.

Pujols is also from Missouri if Cafardo did a little research before opening his mouth. He went to high school/college in Missouri after moving from the Dominican Republic then he was drafted by the cardinals.

"coming from a sox fan i could see bay leaving for a crazy contract and then getting outbid for holliday.....then scrambling to find a suitable replacement. i think the outfield could become an issue next year"
What would the issue be? Refusing to over pay for mediocre players? I'm a Sox fan and if Bay doesn't think 4 years and $60M is enough then I say let him walk. I don't think I even want to get involved in Holliday discussions with Boras trying to claim that he's worth $180M, that is completely absurd. I'd rather the team pack their bags up, take the 3rd place spot in 2010 and come back in 2011 with a bigger, stronger, younger team.

"but there have been public statements by high-revenue clubs in the metropolitan areas of ‘why are we subsidizing these teams?’ ’’
I was SO GLAD to se Michael Weiner, the MLBA Union Rep himself bring this up in the Carfedo article.
Until this most BASIC QUESTION can be answered, even in rudimentary terms, then there is NO REASON for roughly 1/3 of the teams to exist. How, in capitalism, can 1/3 of the teams exist on handouts? Is there such a thing as welfare in MLB? Why? Welfare for Millionaire owners? Explain that part? Especially when several just pocket the cash? Sound familiar?
No wonder that several teams speak out regarding the practice of being forced to support this useless forced cash cow system, let Pittsburgh, Miami, KC, San Diego, Oakland and 3-4 others go the way of the Do-Do bird, the game will be stronger for it. Oakland has a team accross the Bay anyway, Pittsburgh within 200 iles and the Fish never EVER got supported, nor Oakland when they won **3** straight WS titles from 72-74, nor had the LaRussa super teams in the late 80's.
It's time for this crap of supporting dead weight to stop.

these comments are making my head hurt.
I don't see any reason why Pujols wouldn't want to stay in St. Louis. He has everything he wants, he just wants to play in meaningful games. And St. Louis will always pay enough to remain competitive. At this point, it wouldn't make a lot of sense for him to go somewhere else.
Posted by: CardsFan | November 01, 2009 at 10:12 PM
Bob Loblaw is just jealous that even mark buehrle wants to be a cardinal. If he can say the cardinals are basically the cubs well then what are the White sox because to me they're in the same class as the Orioles, the Pirates or the Mariners which is no knock on them but they certainly aren't the second most successful franchise in MLB history.

Your wrong about the Larussa A's
Yr AL Attendance
88-7th
89-2nd
90-2nd
91-3rd
92-4th
The team drew 2M plus 2001-2006 when they put a winner on the field. What they need is a new ball park. The A's play in a 40+ year old dump better suited for football.

"The team drew 2M plus 2001-2006 when they put a winner on the field. What they need is a new ball park. The A's play in a 40+ year old dump better suited for football."
My apologies for that brief spike in A's attendance without looking any up over the years, I would venture that is probably about the only few years that they have ever had any in the history of the club, going from the Connie Mack, to Charlie Finley, to current ownershop period covering from KC to now and nearly 100 years and how many ball parks?
New parks do not make any kind of magical attendance improve, only a cash cow for ownership and a financial burden for the local area and citizens saddled with it.
Most teams that build the things get a short 3-5 year spike at MOST and then resume the dreary attendance and you can check that over the last 20 years with teams that have always drawn well, vs teams that never draw, moving them around like checkers is the same thing to another dismal market, or where there are 2 teams located in a city 50, or even 100-200 miles away usually does no good either and a pathetic market with no base.
Too many teams that cannot support themselves with too few of a fan base and the ones that cannot support themselves all blameining it on a lousy stadium, then after that they move.. Same old story.
Have seen this going on for over 50 years as a fan and the song NEVER changes...

First off the idea of Pujols leaving STL is sickening. Second like someone else already wrote Albert did go to high school in Missouri. Third while it may be an enormous contract that keeps him in STL he has said many times that winning and being on a competitive team is most importatn. While i do understand that he will get a huge contract I can't imagine the Cardinals having the best player in baseball and letting him walk. On top of all of that Albert has many charaties and a restaurant that he is involved in. Cafardo is really stretching here

As a die hard Mets fan I will submit that my team has the worst fans in baseball. There is no loyalty what so ever. All I ever hear is how we should trade everybody. I don't understand what about the team people feel an afinity for if not the human beings it's comprised of. I know players come and go over the years, and every now and then someone on the team is bound to stick in your craw, but my fellow "fans" want to throw the baby out with the bath water. I want a team with the exact same line-up injury free.

Plus, mark McGwire and pujols signed they're contracts they took less money too play for great fans and a competitive ball club

Mets will get one or the other.
Holliday or Bay
They have Beltran and Francouer. Most likely Holliday coming to Mets. Wilpon was quoted saying Mets are spending. Dont be suprised to see them make a wave at Halladay, Kazmir, or another big time pitcher. They need to stay with the Phillies. I also think they should trade Delgado to a AL for a DH. Could get alot for him. Pujols going to the Mets? ehhh I'm not sure yet....

It's being allowed by the greed of the players association.
Where’s the skill in this championship from The Yankee$? The Yankee All-Star team bought this win! Why do you Yankee fans think this is good for baseball? Do you actually enjoy buying & stripping the talent from other teams?
The NFL has way passed MLB for profits a long time ago. Google it! Yes the small market city Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl, but can you imagine the small market Pittsburgh Pirates being comparable? Green Bay has won many Super Bowls, can the small-market Milwaukee Brewers be comparable? No way!
IF the NFL ran it like the MLB, imagine the NY Giants:
QB- Drew Brees
RB- Adrian Peterson and Steven Jackson
WR – OchoCinco and Randy Moss.
TE – Jason Witten
Get the idea?!
The NFL is like one big company if you will, that has 32 franchises supporting each other, so that each city can have a marketable team with a good chance to win. The NFL wants ALL of the franchises to succeed. In MLB, each franchise does not care if other fails. That’s the difference. MLB WILL continue to be less popular than the NFL.
The Yank$ will eventually sign Joe Mauer, Albert Pujols, and Zack Greinke with their very deep pocket$ within the next two years. They’ll keep spending to keep winning World Series year after year. So signing and adding Mauer, Pujols, and Greinke to the existing lineup would be good for baseball? No! I have a solution for MLB: keep the top 8 spending teams in each league, and contract the rest.
The Yankee$ will go after Albert Pujols, Joe Mauer, and Greinke within the next two years. Regardless of what these players say, I don't believe in any loyalty anymore in baseball. IF the Yank$ get these three players on top of their current lineup, it will certainly harm baseball...except for the Yankee fan. I can go on and on, but it's pure evil greed and despicable.
Yes the Yankees have the following home grown players in Jeter, Posada, Cano, Melke, Gardner, Andy, Hughes, joba, Rivera.
BUT...BUT they can afford to keep them ALL without losing them to Free Agency. I bet that IF a different franchise were to pay double their salaries t...even Jeter would leave The Yankee$. Problem is...who can afford to pay them, without breaking the bank?
How does a newspaper survive and thrive? Is it the daily subscriptions? Partly, but it’s mostly advertising dollars.
How does a MLB team survive and thrive? Not solely by the wealth of the owner (even if the owner is a Billionaire) and/or ticket sales. It’s advertising and TV dollars!
Steinbrenner really does not have to touch his personal wealth. He has the luxury of gravy dollars from the YES network.
In the mid 1970's Vida Blue was probably THE most dominant left-handed pitcher. Please read on...It's also on Wikepedia:
"In 1976, baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn vetoed an attempt to sell Vida Blue to the New York Yankees and in 1977, Kuhn canceled a proposed trade of Blue to the Cincinnati Reds. In both instances, Kuhn said the trades would be bad for baseball because they would benefit already powerful teams without making them give up any significant talent in return."
1976 World Champion Cincinnati Reds
1977 World Champion NY Yankees
Where have you gone Bowie Kuhn?? Bud Selig is allowing this imbalance!
