« Odds & Ends: Gordon, Uribe, D'backs, Igawa | Main | Nightengale On Holliday, Sheets, Yankees »
Cardinals GM John Mozeliak expressed interest in Xavier Nady and other Scott Boras clients, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Presumably Nady would be a low-rent option for left field. Of course, that's not the lead of Strauss' article - the focus is Matt Holliday and the Cards' attempt to sign him.
Mozeliak met with Boras for an hour Tuesday, but did not make an offer for Holliday. Boras then spoke to the media, disputing the notion that the Cardinals are a mid-market team:
"I don't know what a mid-market franchise is. That's like a midsize aircraft carrier. They all have the potential to have an economic bomb. If you're drawing 3.3 million fans and you're averaging $50 a fan coming in, I just don't know that mid-market term. I'm trying to think if that's part of the laissez-faire system. I don't know."
Boras-speak is always hyperbolic, but he makes this point every year and there's something to it. Baseball teams make a ton of money. The players deserve a lot of it.

Word to Boras. Most Cardinals fans don't spend $50+ per game. I know I spend $20 at the most per game and that's cause I buy tickets from Stubhub.

Ummmm... I think there is big difference when a team like the Yankees also own the television rights and have a broader licensing scope. Teams like the Yankees, Cub, Red Sox, have fans all over the country and world. The "mid-market" teams do not really stretch out that far at those type of numbers. So attendance is only a small part of your income and there is a lot bills to pay from that.

Good?

A much more competitive game?

no not every person spends $50, but when you average all of those people paying $10-$20 gate fee and those paying the price for suites and homeplate areas it would prob average out to $50.
i hate scott boras but he is as clever as a fox.

I really wish we could see what these teams clear after a season. Then we can really judge if owners are being cheap or not.

i highly doubt any GM's are NOT signing players when they have the money to do so...obviously its a job security issue to need to put the best talent on the field.

Baseball without Scott Boras? This is blasphemy, how can you not want $20 million dollar contracts, and overpaid players?

Boras: "Baseball teams make a ton of money. The players deserve a lot of it."
... and I deserve a percentage, too.

Tim wrote that line actually...Scott's quotes ended when the Italics quit being used

I normally wince when I hear/see what Scott Boras has to say then get angry. But that man does one hell of a job getting his clients money...

Maybe not every fan spent $50 that came through the gates of Busch Stadium, but Boras makes a valid point.
DeWitt and the Cardinals can't cry "mid-market" when they consistently draw in the top 5 of attendance every single year.

I believe the Cardinals have fans all over the place too. If you look at the visitor's stadiums, you will see a ton of Cardinal fans. I see a bunch in Houston. YOu need to realize, before the Giants and Dodgers move to California, The Cardinals was the farest west and the farest south team in the MLB.

Nady for the Cards= 4th OF. Offer 2/10 and if Boras balks, walks!

If everything falls through with the Sox trying to sign Bay or Holliday then I wouldn't mind seeing him patrol left at Fenway he's had pretty decent numbers and if he's healthy he could really be effective.

I agree, he is making a fool of himself once again, but knowing that you couldn't spell "way" right, I doubt you read that article without help.

Dude, its a joke. Have you never seen the "O RLY" Owls?
Posted by: Dermick | November 11, 2009 at 09:13 PM
Does anyone realize that a beer at Busch is 9 dollars? The average fan easily spends 50 bucks when you include concessions, if not just the tickets. My father in law has season tickets that are pretty good, not great, and for a Cubs game the face value is over 100 bucks.
If you are going to stub hub and paying 20 bucks, you are in the nose bleeds or seeing the Pirates or Nationals.
By the way...about the beer- they have to overcharge because they import it all the way from...well, across the street.

I'm a frequent attendee at Busch Stadium....and I've NEVER spent $50 to attend a game, unless it was for the playoffs or World Series.
Do some people spend $50+ in ticket and concessions? Sure. Does it average out to $50? No.

P.S. Scott Boras is a tool.

"Do some people spend $50+ in ticket and concessions? Sure. Does it average out to $50? No."
I'm sure it probably does considering some rich people pay 1000's of dollars to get seats in the suites. So if you factor that into the equation with the fact that some people pay like $30 total for nose bleeds and concessions you probably get $50 per person.
