« Diamondbacks Decline Chad Tracy's Option | Main | Angels Re-Sign Bobby Abreu »
In addition to declining their 2010 option for Chad Tracy, the Diamondbacks cleared three 40-man roster spots by outrighting players, according to The Arizona Republic. The casualities were outfielders Alex Romero and Trent Oeltjen, and righthander Daniel Cabrera. Cabrera elected to become a free agent rather than accept a minor league assignment.
The suddenly well-traveled Cabrera got into six games (one start) for Arizona, allowing eight runs and 20 baserunners in just 11 innings. He also made eight starts and one relief appearance with the Nationals after spending five years in Baltimore.

Honestly, the true lowlight of the Nats 2009 season were Daniel Cabrera's starts, no contest.

That's just sad.

Sad but true (having watched that attrocity of the season).
Does Cabrera really think he is getting an MLB contract? He should consider himself lucky if he gets an offer for a minor league deal. He's just not worth it, and he shows no sign of improvement.

Cabrera and Rich Hill must get drunk at the same bar.

I think his career in the majors is done. Hello independent leagues!

At this point it doesn't look like Cabrera can be an effective starter, but I think there is hope for him out of the pen. Assuming of course that something can be done about his control, 7.88 BB/9 with the Nats is impressively awful. But I'm sure some pitching coach will see something they think they can fix and give him at least a minor league invite.

Good luck to that pitching coach. The articles and quotes I read while he was in DC indicated he wasn't very open to coaching or criticism. That makes it hard to turn a player's career around.

Cabrera should sign with the Cards on a split contract and hope Dave Duncan can teach him some control.
As for the rest of these guys, Oeltjen is a bit surprising. Not much power, but he has the other tools down. Showed strong contact, patience, speed and defense at all levels in the minors. I suppose Gerardo Parra is their future, but Oeltjen is hardly a bad keep, even if he is a 4th OFer.

I agree with AA but it will only work if Cabrera excepts the fact that he will have to find a new career as a relief pitcher. If not it will be the independent leagues for him! As for the other two I'm not sure about Oletjen but I do believe Alex Romero has a lot of promise, unfortunately the D-Backs are all set when it comes to outfielders.

DC just didn't want a minor league assignment in DC's farm, no?

I'm ok with the release of Romero and Cabrera, but I'm a little surprised about Oletjen. I agree with the stuff AA said about him. Someone will pick him up. He seemed to have some promise.
