Diamondbacks Considering Hernandez

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic hears that the Diamondbacks are considering free agent right-hander Livan Hernandez.  The 35-year-old posted a 5.44 ERA in 31 starts with the Mets and Nationals last season, but as Piecoro notes, Hernandez's primary role in Arizona would be to serve as both a positive clubhouse influence and to eat some innings at the back of the rotation.

If Hernandez did sign, he would be joining his fifth different team in three years.  It would also be his second stint in the desert --- Hernandez made 43 starts for Arizona over the 2006 and 2007 seasons, delivering a 4.64 ERA overall and throwing the second-highest number of innings (204.1) of any D-Backs pitcher on the 2007 club.

Piecoro said that the team was impressed by Hernandez's work with Miguel Montero, and bringing back Montero's old mentor could have a positive effect on the young catcher as he goes into 2010 as the incumbent starter behind the plate.

I saw the title and thought "DBacks looking at Felix? Byrnes pulling off another epic trade would be entertaining."

haha, i thought the exact same thing... I was like aw crap, and then I saw "Livan Hernandez"...

I thought the exact same thing melonis rex. You took the words right out of my mouth.

why do teams still bother with this guy

He is the "anti-Bradley". Not much left in the tank. His performance makes the club worse on days he pitches. Great guy though and fantastic to have on the team (just don't let him pitch much).

Just hire him as a coach. You're better off throwing guys like Mulvey than wasting innings on hernandez.

Are you kidding me??
what is Josh Byrnes trying to build, a re-tread Dbacks team?
First Lyle Overbay? no thanks.
now Livan Hernandez? ummm...

Seriously, he makes deals like the Haren deal and Garland for Tony Abreu and I'm pleased. Thinking that he's turning the team around.

Now he wants to add a washed up mid-5 ERA guy?? sure, he eats up innings but still will cost us the game. He's old, He's Slow, He's worthless. Sorry Livan, your a good guy, but not what our team needs.

Josh Byrnes, do what the fans want. RELEASE eric byrnes. As for a starting pitcher, maybe Joel Piniero is worth a look. Sure he's coming off a career year (which is the same scenario that got us in trouble with Eric Byrnes), but long as you dont offer him the moon, i like it. He posted GREAT numbers for STL. He developed a new pitch: sinker, from Dave Duncan. Call me crazy, but isn't a ground ball pitcher at Chase a recipe for success?? Especially when I believe I read that 60% of pinieros pitches, when hit, where ground balls?? Plus he toted a very impressive BB/IP ratio.

Please do you die-hard fans a favor.

NO GLAUS
NO SEXON
NO OVERBAY
NO ORTIZ (russ)
NO LIVAN HERNANDEZ
NO CRAIG COUNSELL

its not that hard Josh.

oh, and btw... I heard the Royals NEED a catcher and were offering Alberto Callaspo. Yes, the same Callaspo we had that you let go. Well, he played one heck of a 2B and hit over .300 for the royals.

Snyder for Callaspo.

its not rocket science.

So, did you just throw in "Callaspo played one heck of a 2B" to try and prove your point, having no facts to back that up and hoping no one would spot it?

Callaspo had a fine hitting season, but flat out sucked defensively, he was among the worst in the league at 2B!

Basically, you're suggesting that the Royals take on the 11.25 mil owed to Snyder over the next two seasons, coming off back surgery and as a catcher who wasn't extremely productive even before the surgery for a young, cost controlled 2B in Callaspo who could net much more than that?

Wow. Just wow.

dbacknation, Callaspo plays horrible d. Wouldnt call it 'one heck of a 2B'...

I think last years objective was to get the first pick, they injured Webb on purpose so he couldn't pitch. They're probably planning on injuring Haren too........

Yes they need defense. Maybe trade away Stephen Drew in a deal for a hitter and sign Jack Wilson.

well the diamondbacks obviously have no plans on competing next season

Everyone says this guy eats up innings, but I could throw a stick out the window and find a guy who can put up the same numbers as Livan Hernandez.

Ok. I didn't mean to come across like he was a gold glove caliber 2B. Lol. Don't get too excited. But he's just as good as who we have now: Ryan roberts, ryal, etc but can hit.

And you think I'd expect the Royals to take on snyders full contract?? I didn't know I'd have to break down the deal for you guys to get it. Of COURSE the dbacks would have to assume some/most of snyders contract or add a player to make the deal work.

Speaking of snyder, yes coming off an injury, but snyder is a top 5 defensive catcher in the NL. Shoot, some have him 2nd in the NL behind yadier Molina. And at least he's proven, unlike the catcher the dodgers were offering.

And yeah, I'm convinced my un-born son can run the dbacks better than Josh Byrnes.

We need a new GM bad!!!
