« Odds & Ends: Mariners, Riggleman, Crisp, 'Stros | Main | Petit, Slaten Claimed Off Waivers »
According to Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune, infielder Edgar Gonzalez intends to opt for free agency once the World Series ends.
“I think this is the end of my run here,” Gonzalez said Wednesday after the Padres dropped him from the 40-man roster and outrighted him to Triple-A Portland. “I love San Diego. And the Padres gave me an opportunity that I'm thankful for. But my future is probably elsewhere.”
Gonzalez, 31, batted .216/.278/.373 with four homers and 18 RBI in 169 plate appearances this season with the Padres. He is a .255/.312/.381 career hitter and made $407K in '09. Oh, and he's also Adrian Gonzalez's brother.

I think this marks the end of Agon in SD. Part of the reason he would stay is because his brother and family in general was in SD. He has NO reason to sign an extension now and seems like he'll wear a new uniform before his contract is up

You thought E. Gonzalez would really still be around in 2012? I'm not sure he signs an extention but I don't think this has a ton to do with it.

I didnt think he would... But Agon said in the public that he'd be more willing to sign an extension if his brother was there...

No wonder he had a major league job with those numbers

So, would this be a discussion if he was named Edgar Smith?

He's not a bad player, he had some big hits for us. He is however pretty bad defensively, but in 08 he was ok with the bat.

Hopefully the last time we see Edgar Gonzalez with his own post.

Edgar Gonzalez was a below average fielder and a below average hitter.
What he actually brought to the Padres other than keeping his brother happy is a mystery to me.
It was heartwarming to see another brother combo on the Padres and Egon did hit well for a short period in May and June of 2008, but he really had no skills that would say "I am a major league player".
Oscar Salazar is seen as a much better defensive player and has shown he can hit in the major leagues.
One of them had to go. I am glad to see the Padres did what was right for better baseball on the field and not what was the better PR move.

Is Adrian going to be unhappy that they dumped his brother, or happy that Hoyer appears to be more concerned with winning than keeping everyone happy?
Which, I suppose, is ironic.

"My future is probably elsewhere." - Edgar Gonzalez
No offense, Edgar, but if you can't make the cut on the Padres your future may be somewhere out of baseball. The market for light hitting, poor fielding players is generally a bit tepid. If I were him, I'd do the exact opposite and stay with the Pads for one more year in AAA and try to play my way up to a utility spot. In addition to being in the same club as his brother, I don't see any other club he'd be more likely to get major league playing time in.

lakersdodgersyankees4life -But Agon said in the public that he'd be more willing to sign an extension if his brother was there.
He never said that. He said if the Padres can put a better team and that the Padres move in the fences in right and right center. He would sign a extension. I do not where you got your info but is is wrong.
