Heyman's Latest: Lackey, Tigers, Reds

Jon Heyman of SI.com's last few Twitter updates have provided a variety of intriguing information from around the league. Let's check them out....

To not offer Lackey $100 Mil and for him not to sign is an oximoron. SO with that in mind, the Brewers and Mariners won't sign him.

To remark on the Tigers part of this posting, I would normally say that putting 3/14 of your combined starting 9 and rotation would be TRYING to start a fire sale, but what Detroit seems to be doing is making up for a few bad contracts while replacing proven talent (Granderson and Inge) with cheap talent, and trying to get as much as they can for Jackson. I'd like to see the Red Sox go after Jackson if he is available and if Detroit doesn't expect to get even 50% of a Halliday package. You start him till the All Star break, and put him in the pen for the 2nd half =)

The mets could do 5 years at 80 million

Thoughts?

Letting Magglio get enough at bats for his option to vest is sure hurting the Tigers now...

Let Inge go. The 2009 Tigers problem was run production, and Inge was almost a guranteed out. Other than making the highlight reel every now and then, his 3b performance was less than stellar. Tigers have guys (Guillen, Raburn) who can play 3b with much better offensive numbers.

I can see that. Well that's because the Mets is Lackey's most logical destination.

What would Arroyo cost? Would the salary absorption be cheaper then Wolf? Would he take away pieces from a Roy Halladay deal?

Answers please.

there an interesting story on nesn.com under red sox, bout the sox could get votto to help the reds. what are the chances the sox trade for granderson?

Arroyo wouldn't cost much in terms of prospects because he's awful. But he is expensive and not worth it at all.

Will it take pieces form a Halladay deal? Moot because the Mets don't have enough to make such a deal unless they trade like Reyes or such and since I don't think it's happening they won't land Doc.

Honestly if you're the Mets, you kinda need Lackey. I have no idea when Johan is back but Johan and Lackey especially in the NL sounds pretty good.

The bluejays decide to accept a deal
I wouldn't mess with a deal that brings. In halladay

m's should man up and make the deal

I am personally amazed that anyone would trade anything for Arroyo and Harang. That being said I suppose there are some teams out there that could stand a 4.5 era guy at the back end of their rotation and would be willing to unload some talent for it with the scarce level of pitching talent available. This is going to be great for the Reds. Take what you can get. Any players of value with net a positive result in the end.

The Mets could use a starter like Harang or Arroyo. Along with the Angels, Dodgers, and probably some others.

what about a trade of bad contracts... Cordero for Guillen.. ????? cordero's contract is about 800 k less than guillen's... the red's want a middle of the order bat.. and guillen posted an O.P.S over 900 over the last three months.. det would not have 2 waste money retaining lyon or rodney and could collect the draft picks.. guillen's ab's could go to strieby, larrish,or Wilken

J6taksih.. letting rayburn or guillen play third is just short of insane.. guillen is a DH.. and rayburn is not an infielder.. i could see trading inge if they do something like E.Jackson for Matt Hamell.. but his defense leaves alot to be desired as well..

M's got money to spend, so its not out of order to think they couldnt pull Lackey.....somthing like 5 yr for $85-90 mil

They would become instant favorites to win the West with a 1-2 punch.........of course thats what we thought when we landed Bedard too!!!!

the cubs need to go after both inge and granderson for center and 2nd base. wouldnt think their would be any way the tigers would trade both to one team, but that would solve two huge problems for the cubs. they would have a leadoff man and Inge brings over some leadership and the fans would love him. could cubs getting either of these guys work?

WHoa great posting about Lackey and the brewers. Can you be any more redundant. How about you only tag the brewers if you get some new information.

I can definitely see a trade happening between the Mets and Reds whether it includes pitching or Phillips if they really are trading him which I doubt. Since it isn't much more than a salary dump I don't believe the Mets would need to give up any major league ready talent ie only prospects and probably not top level (Davis/F-mart). I am not really familiar with the Reds roster so what type of players might they be interested in?

MetsvilleSlugger,

The Reds would be interested in Catchers, Shortstops, and always Pitching.

Anytime Arroyo is mantioned in the rumor on this site posters start ranting the same ill-informed crap every time. "Arroyo sucks, he isn't worth a hot bag of nickels", et. What garbage.

Arroyo takes the ball every fifth day without fail. He made 23 quality starts last year. Season ERA of 3.84 with a JUL-SEP ERA of 2.35. He pitches in a hitters ballpark in Cincinnati. Threw 3 complete games. Took five more games through the 8th inning or better. You clowns are right though, no team wanting to contend through the course of a 162 game season has a use for a guy like that.

timmytwoshoezzz-

I agree that Arroyo is a solid pitcher but you are definitely overvalueing him. Most outtings he pitches well or at least solid but every once in awhile, he just flat out embarrasses himself and comes to the mound throwing the ball like its a hot bag of nickels. If he could eliminate his 5-6 bad starts a year, he would be considered a great pitcher.

I will also say that Arroyo did do well late this season for cinci so im sure some playoff team will offer something decent.

Thanks Ethanator,

The Mets may be perfect trading partners then with multiple SS prospects in the organization. Say maybe Havens plus Niese (a SP) at least to start with. Would the Reds really be interested in some of the younger arms the Mets have that are still a couple years away... probably unlikely. But if we had to trade Pelfrey it wouldn't make sense for us and neither Maine nor Perez would be tempting to another team. It will be very interesting to see if this shakes out to anything in the coming months, something to keep an eye on.

Wolverine...Guiilen was brought up a shortstop, He played SS up until 2007 then switched to utility. He was a 2007 All Star as a 3b alt. He is not happy DHing or playing the outfield, he can play 3b

Mets get:
Arroyo or Harang (your choice)

Reds get:
Maine
SS prospect

This would save the Reds a considerable amount of payroll while still having a realistic replacement for the rotation. Mets get a quality pitcher who may become a very good pitcher in that park of theirs

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski insisted the team wasn't having a "fire sale," ...

But he concluded this by saying that if any other club wanted to trade teams, he would trade straight up, today.

B N-
I can think of a few teams that would take him up on that offer... if only

"the cubs need to go after both inge and granderson for center and 2nd base"

Granderson makes sense. Inge is no better than Fontenot, three years older, and 15x the salary.

Uh-oh. Just read that Fontenot's a Super-2. Make that 3x the salary if he's not non-tendered.

Jwb

I totally agree with you. Inge makes no sense for the cubs, but as always a speedy CF who hustles and is a great teammate makes perfect sense. Id also like the cubs to see if they could get phillips from the reds.

Trade for granderson
Trade for phillips
Trade bradley to texas before they change their minds
Offseason done

If you're the Mets, I think Lackey is an absolute must. Pay him. If they think Arroyo is a suitable alternative, then this mess is never getting fixed. Also, if Omar doesn't at least "kick the tires" on Brandon Phillips, then he's not doing his job.

If Brandon Phillips is available, then the Mets have to do whatever is necessay to get him. He is a top 3 2b in the league. The Reds would be crazy to trade him. Harang or Arroyo are an asset to any pitching staff. And those of you who think the Mets can't trade for Halliday - he is not in Johann country - only teams that can afford to extend him will trade for him with one year left on his contract. I'm not saying the Mets could offer the best package, but I am saying they are one of the few teams who can afford him. Two of those teams are in the same division as the Jays. Sound familiar?

I meant to type "he is NOW in Johann country
