« Dan Uggla Rumors: Sunday | Main | Eric Bruntlett, Tyler Walker Become Free Agents »
ESPN's Buster Olney spoke with Brandon Lyon's agent Barry Meister, who believes his client can land a multiyear deal this winter. Lyon is flexible with his role, whether it be closer, set-up man, or something in-between. Olney believes the Phillies, Angels, Yankees, and Mets make sense. Will the Tigers feel safe offering Lyon arbitration? They could gain a draft pick from the Type B free agent, as it doesn't sound like he'd accept an offer.
Lyon, 30, posted a 2.86 ERA, 6.5 K/9, and 3.5 BB/9 in 78.6 innings this for the Tigers, earning $4.25MM. He posted his best groundball rate in years - 47.2% - which helps soften the blow of his career-worst walk rate.

Hey everybody, let me tell you the best lineup for next year:
Jeter
Damon
Teixeira
A-Rod
Matsui
Posada
Cano
Cabrera
Swisher
That's It.
Why bother on Granderson, Ordoñez, Holliday (Did anyone see him drop the ball at the NLDS?), Bay or Lackey (Injuries corncern)?.
Sign Damon for 2 years, Matsui for 1, and save money for NEXT season, when we should get Mauer and Halladay.
A quiet signing: BEDARD!. He should be great this season.

Yo, Yankees#28, what the he double hockey sticks does your above comment have to do with Brandon Lyon? You won the World Series, congratulations but not every freaking thread has to have the Yankees line-up on it. Be relevant or stay off.

Hey my i took my dog 2 the vet and ran a 6 minute mile today.... Det. had better offer arbitration to Lyon Rodney and polanco.. if any of those guys were 2 accept they would fill a hole or inn polanco's case.. they could simply start the season w him and then trade him for a solid prospect.. on one year deals they would all presumeably have solid value.. we need the picks to restock the farm system.. these guys aren't edgar renteria !!!

The Tigers would be stupid to not offer arbitration to Lyon. They should also be glad if he accepted. There is no deterrent to any club signing a Type B free agent, since they don't have to PAY any compensation. The Tigers should also be glad to give Lyon a two year deal. He may wind up being the closer if they lose Rodney. Not the most appealing thought, but a whole lot better than Perry or (gulp) Zoomer the freak show.

Wolvering- First, you can't trade a free agent that is signed until at least June 15 of the following season, and that applies to pending free agents who accept arbitration. Second, Polly is a five and ten guy as of the end of May, when he'll be with the team for five years, so unless they negotiate a more limited no trade clause, Polanco could veto any trade if he returns to the Tigers.
But I agree, offer arby to Polanco, Lyon, and Rodney, and be glad if any or all of them accept.

Seconded by a yankee fan. posting dream lineups is lame.

Yankee fans think they have the only team that should win the world series.Anybody that follows baseball knows your owner try every year to buy the Championship. As baseball die hard fans we show just forget about the majors and watch sand lot games or minor league games where the game is played for the love of the sport.Major league baseball is all about the money and how much they can screw the fans out of hard earned cash.Selig is a total yes man to the money changers.

tankees#28: I didn't realize this was a thread about the Skankees or ANY of those players you named?
You went into a BRANDON LYON thread and discussed what the Yankees should do about big-name FAs.
You are the trolliest troll to ever troll the trolliverse.

Tigerdog: Well, here's the thing there with Polanco:
First off, they could keep him until 6/15. He could start until then, then bring in Scott Sizemore through a Longoria, Price, or Wieters call-up, keeping him under tam control for an extra year.
As far as the 10-5, I think Polanco would accept being traded if he realized he was going to lose his starting job. Even if he stayed, big deal. Insurance isn't really a bad thing.

oldtimer: The Yankees DO have the only team that should win every WS. When you have a payroll that more than doubles that of 21 other teams, triples that of 8, quadruples that of 3, and quintuples that of one, whiles beating out the #2 payroll by more than 30%, you SHOULD win EACH AND EVERY YEAR.
However, they don't and they won't.

Mets perhaps. What kind of contract is he expected to get?
Posted by: diehardmets | November 16, 2009 at 02:31 PM
cubs----/that's just my point! we talk about who should get this guy or that guy and its useless. When I was a kid I worshiped the Milwaukee Braves and we had baseball players that were with teams for their entire careers. We called them roll models. The game of baseball that I knew is gone and thats the sad part.Times change but not always for the better.

but i am on topic. bc the phils def need to bolster the bullpen with a guy who is flexible. they are going to stick w lidge as the closer at least until he falls apart. lyon is lookin for multi year but i hope the phils dont overpay...everyone talks about the bad bullpen that is not too far removed from the 08 squad that was best in NL. phils please--top dollars on relievers are not worth it--ask jj putz and the mets. spend the money on getting lee a 4-5 year deal this offseason and bringing beltre in to play 3rd. thanks

Yeah... the lineup posting is stupid, and makes the real diehard Yankee fans look stupid as well. Chill out with that.
If anything, Lyon would be a pretty good fit for the Yankees, especially with their bullpen not being so great down the stretch, with the exceptions of Rivera, Robertson, and Marte.
Lyon is definitely someone for the Yankees to consider with Bruney being up in the air, and not knowing where Hughes and Chamberlain stand.
