7:01pm: Hernandez has a quote from Boras:
"Obviously, he enjoys L.A.," Boras said. "If he went into the marketplace, the real negative was that he could end up playing in a place he wasn't comfortable playing."
6:19pm: Dylan Hernandez of The LA Times tweets that according to agent Scott Boras, Manny Ramirez will return to the Dodgers next year. Technically, Manny signed a two-year deal last offseason, but he has the ability to opt out of the 2010 portion of his contract within five days after the World Series. He would forfeit $20MM by doing so.
The 37-year-old Ramirez had a tale of two seasons in 2009. He hit .348/.492/.641 in the team's first 29 games, but "just" .269/.389/.492 after returning from a 50-game banned substance suspension. ESPN's Keith Law said that Manny showed the "the loss of bat speed" at the end of the season, and didn't think that any team should invest $20MM in him for 2010.

The sooner we get past Mnny, the better.
I'm still fatigued from last offseason.

*Manny.
Posted by: Tomahawk368 | November 06, 2009 at 06:25 PM
That guy can just hit. Crazy to think that is a down year.
Posted by: bjsguess | November 06, 2009 at 06:26 PM
Good. he probably has 3 or 4 more years left.
Posted by: harrison | November 06, 2009 at 06:34 PM
He struck out looking a lot after he came back, and if you actually watched all the Dodgers game you'd see he was justified in about 80% of those strikeouts. It really did seem like he was targeted by umpires for the rest of the season. As a result teams pounded him inside where he had to swing at pitches off the plate because they were being called strikes.

Must be a holiday. We do not need to hear about Manny Ramirez this off season.
Posted by: Knuffy | November 06, 2009 at 06:34 PM
enjoy your last 7 digit contract manny
what a cartoon
one more year and all dodger fans will have their eyes open
Posted by: UpstateNYSOXfan | November 06, 2009 at 06:35 PM
bjsguess - he can hit but I don't think its overly wrong to say his skills are dropping.
He is 37 years old, I think he is strugging to play a full season now in the outfield and that could easily be evidenced by the fact his slugging % dropped in every month during the 2009 season.
Under .500 slugging could easily become the norm. I would have to think this is his last season in the NL - if he wants to play he needs to be a DH.
Posted by: quintjs | November 06, 2009 at 06:35 PM
The drop directly correlated to Manny being hit in the hand by a 95 MPH fastball from Homer Bailey. This wasn't an age thing and it wasn't a steroid thing. Also, his bat speed was fine. It was his swing timing and plate discipline that went away after the hand injury.
I am shocked that Law would say something so dumb.
Posted by: AA | November 06, 2009 at 06:41 PM
You guys would be amazed at how many people in LA hate Manny right now. During the NLCS, I was at a bar and so many prefered Pierre to Manny.
Posted by: mrcameronrose.com | November 06, 2009 at 06:53 PM
AA - Looking at some scorecards - I make that day July 21 when he was hit.
In August, Manny hit .301, only in September did his average drop down to .218.
Now his slugging dropped after the hbp so it could have effected that, but he is 37 years old to say he age has nothing to do with it is remarkable.
Posted by: quintjs | November 06, 2009 at 06:54 PM
of course he did cause no one else would pay him that.
He would be dumb not to accept it
Posted by: Light Up the Halo | November 06, 2009 at 06:55 PM
Frank McCourt should be happy.
Not.
Posted by: jolivarez | November 06, 2009 at 07:06 PM
No Borass, the real negative was that nobody was going to pay Manny $20mil a year anymore!
Posted by: GreenMachine | November 06, 2009 at 07:06 PM
"Obviously, he enjoys L.A.," Boras said. "If he went into the marketplace, the real negative was that he could end up playing in a place he wasn't comfortable playing.
Does Borass really believe that? who was going to give him more money?
Posted by: terry180 | November 06, 2009 at 07:11 PM
fail. good luck dodger fans
Posted by: 04Forever | November 06, 2009 at 07:13 PM
terry - he probably does, which shows why its good to be a professional agent.
Anyone else would be in need of serious help.
Posted by: quintjs | November 06, 2009 at 07:15 PM
Manny won't be worth $20 million next season, BUT he will be playing for a contract, so it'll be interesting to see what kind of number he puts up.
Next year will be an emotional one given it's extremely likely it will be both Manny and Joe Torre's final season's with the Dodgers. Not that they were here for long, but their impact has been huge.
Long Live Mannywood.

I give it another month before he's "uncomfortable" and then another 2 weeks before he's "comfortable."

"Obviously, he enjoys L.A.," Boras said. "If he went into the marketplace, the real negative was that he could end up playing in a place he wasn't comfortable playing."
Scott Boras-to-English translation:
"Obviously he wouldn't get 20 Million anywhere else on the market, so he will stay here. He also doesn't mind living and playing for LA so it's a bonus."
Posted by: Darion | November 06, 2009 at 07:51 PM
"Obviously, he enjoys***His 20M should be here instead*** L.A.," Boras said. "If he went into the marketplace, the real negative was that he could end up playing in a place he wasn't comfortable playing."
There is nothing that should be in this topic, with the exception of one long laugh followed by another it is so funny following Boras's ridiculous spin on Manny's having to take the 20M, or 1/2 and the LAD being stuck with him.. Now here is mine. HAHAHA
Posted by: johns | November 06, 2009 at 08:06 PM
Yeah johns, I mean it's terrible that the Dodgers are "stuck" with a guy who's bad year was a .949 OPS.
Posted by: vtadave | November 06, 2009 at 08:16 PM
A motivated and healthy Manny playing in a contract year with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove, should be amazing to watch. One thing no one has ever questioned about Manny was the work he put into conditioning and working on his craft (hitting). He probably needs to work on his defense some, but his bat should still be mighty next year.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | November 06, 2009 at 08:22 PM
Watch Manny see him self not on Sports Center and demand a trade or trash the Red Sox
Posted by: chris mlb expert | November 06, 2009 at 08:36 PM
Didn't see this coming at all....
Nobody even wanted him last year. Not even the Dodgers. They NEEDED him. After the 50-game suspension, it's possible that nobody would've wanted him at all if he hit the market, unless he took a Bobby Abreu discount.
Manny's an idiot, but he's not stupid enough to throw away $20M.
Posted by: Ksy92003 | November 06, 2009 at 08:40 PM
yawn... Manny is clearly in decline... by June he will start sulking as usual..and quit on the Dodgers.... same old Manny...
Posted by: stadiumnut | November 06, 2009 at 08:50 PM
"Yeah johns, I mean it's terrible that the Dodgers are "stuck" with a guy who's bad year was a .949 OPS."
VtaDave,
Hey, at least after Ramirez renewed his contract wit Boras trying to make it look good, the LAD *might* get a decent player. In a couple days and Boston declines the useless Varitek's 5M team option, you can be about 100% certain that Boras is going to be spinning that exact same line of horse s*%t he just did for Ramirez when he announces that Varitek is picking up his 3M player option and Boston is stuck with his .220 no power and non throwing arm self for one more season...
Posted by: johns | November 06, 2009 at 09:41 PM
Haha. Manny will have a quiet offseason, he will chill out for a couple months, he will return to Mannywood next year refreshed after all the steroid questions from this year are behind him. He won't get hounded in LA like he would in Boston or Philly or NY. Manny will be good to go when the season starts, protected (and protecting) by now established studs in Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier. Manny will post a .450 wOBA.

YFS78, congrats on that WS. You are one of the few Yankee fans on here that I enjoy talking baseball with. I won't enjoy having to hear my buddies all talk about "the 27th ring bro!" all winter, but oh well.
I am also happy, as a baseball fan, that never, ever, ever, ever again will any of us have to hear some jaded, jealous, sportswriter make our ears bleed with the propoganda that A-Rod is some demon who comes into the clubhouse, becomes a cancer and crumbles under the pressure. Whatever anybody thinks about A-Rod, he is an amazing player and I used to hate hearing people say he would never win a world series, and scrutinize him because he is awesome. They said the same thing about Peyton Manning not being able to win the big one also.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 06, 2009 at 11:19 PM
and you guys are funny. I have seen like 12 comments saying.... "haha, thats cuz mannyz wudnt hav gottenz the 20 milllzzz ne whear else!"
Well, that is why Scott Boras is awesome. He doesn't have to worry about who is paying Manny 20 million this year. He got that last year. All he has to worry about, is who will pay Manny 20 million next year when Manny destroys the national league in 2010.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 06, 2009 at 11:23 PM

I have to agree with both you and Scott. Manny was playing with a broken hand, most likely, and the umps seemed to want to make a point by calling strikes that were easily balls. Also, he got hit on the hand that produces his power(his left hand, as he is a righty) which explains his loss of power.
This does fit very well into the Dodger's plans for the future, IMO. We have Trayvon Robinson and Andrew Lambo who will both play at AA next year and could be ready to play in 2011. Lambo gives power, and Robinson gives speed.
My guess, if they both pan out and Loney has another average season(power wise), than Loney gets traded for pitching and they let Lambo be the 1B and Robinson play LF. That would be one of the best defensive OFs in the game...
"Manny can go suck my ****"
Why the **** is a Mets fan mad at Manny?
Also, why are Sox fans still so angry at Manny? Yes, He left on horrible terms. However, He was the main piece in 2 titles, including ending a very long stretch of non-titles. I imagine that some of MLBTR's posters' parents never saw a Sox title, and he brought 2 w/in 4 seasons. And he brought in Bay. Stop complaining... Most fans would kill for that..
nrmax, nice last post lol

Keith Law proves AGAIN he don't know sh!t about baseball.
Manny had the HIGHEST OPS of ANY outfielder with at least 350 plate appearances.
Higher than Braun, Bay, Beltran, Holliday...ANYONE!
Manny is worth the $20 mill.
I'll bet he hits .300, hits 30+ HRs and drives in over 100.
His replacement cost would be MUCH higher considering how many years you would have to give a Holliday or Bay.
Its definitely a GOOD thing for the Dodgers that Manny exercised his option.

"finally... i told it to post at least 12 times and i kept on not posting... very annoying."
That problem here runs in cycles for DAYS at a time LDYF. It has been going on now for about a week this time around and is really, really getting annoying.

nrmaxx88: Thanks for the kind words dude. Yeah, I hope WS #27 w/ Arod having a great run will finally end some of the stupidty. Oddly enough, the people I hope shut up the most are other Yankee fans who have forever made the distinction between Arod and "true" Yankees (those with WS rings from one of the previous 4 teams). The thought that Arod was to blame for the lack of rings was a ludicrous as saying he is soley responsible for this years rings. I would say that the lack of rings for "Arod's" Yankee team had more to do with the lack of a true power #1 (no disrespect to Wang) and the inability for the Yanks to put out 3 dominant pitchers as opposed to 3 very good finesse pitchers.
All that being said, this was a dream season for Aord, minus the scandals and injuries. To have a tremendouse post-season and NOT win a WS ring would've meant nothing to Arod IMO. The fact that he excelled and was part of a WS winner must feel like the best thing on earth aside from the birth of a child.

"Obviously, he enjoys L.A.," Boras said. "If he went into the marketplace, the real negative was that he could end up playing in a place he wasn't comfortable playing."
This quote perfectly embodies why so many people hate Boras. For one thing, no other team is going to pay Manny the kind of money he's getting in his option. On top of that, the idea that he could end up playing in a place where he "isn't comfortable" is absurd, because he would be the one choosing where to go. It's not like he'd be getting traded.
I am just glad we do not have to hear about this fraud again until at least spring training. Though we will be hearing a lot more from Boras.
Posted by: WY | November 07, 2009 at 11:51 AM
Again though. It doesn't matter if Manny wnet .054/.122/.212. It doesn't matter is there isn't a baseball team on the planet that is willing to pay him a dollar. Manny got his 2010 contract in 2009. It doesn't make any difference who would have, or wouldn't have, given Manny 20 million. He already has 20 million. What would you like Boras to say? I'm glad we signed for 2 years because Manny sucks and we couldn't have gotten 20 mil this year? Seriously guys, use your heads. this is all about politics. Of course Manny wouldn't have gotten 20 mil coming off of 2009. It doesn't matter. Boras is going to say the thing that is the most politically correct to his client. Just like your lawyer would do. I doubt your lawyer is going to address the media after you accidentally hit a man with your car and come out in front of the court house and say..."yup, the evidence is overwhelming, he's guilty as shyt."
No, he is going to say whatever presents you in the best light. Part of Boras' job is doing PR for his clients. I honestly can't understand how come some of you guys are so hard headed you can't grasp these simple concepts.
