« Reds Notes: Ramon Hernandez, Hardy | Main | Braves Sign Scott Proctor »
Marcus Thames and Matt Treanor became free agents today, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck. Both former Tigers were non-tender candidates anyway, but apparently they've been outrighted or released.
Thames, 33 in March, hit .252/.323/.453 in 294 plate appearances while playing 125 innings in left field and spending the rest of his time at DH. Thames has played a little first base and right field in his career as well.
Treanor, 34 in March, had only 14 plate appearances this year due to a hip injury. He caught 524 innings for the Marlins back in '08, earning him a $750K contract with the Tigers in December.

This has to be part of the process where the Tigers activate their four guys off the 60 day DL. Expect Mike Hollimon and possibly Clay Rapada to be outrighted, or Donnie Kelly to be let go also.
Treanor gets activated off the 60 day DL and released. Thames, I'm sure they tried to trade him but found no takers since he's headed to arbitration and a $ 3 million payday, Jeff Larish and Joel Zumaya return off the 60 day DL. Mike Hollimon probably gets activated and outrighted, and they need one more spot, so they'll either outright Rapada, or release Kelly. Just my educated guess.

I still think Thames has a chance to have a big season if someone will actually give him consistent AB's.
He's getting a little older, so the chance of a breakout is slimmer, but why don't a team like the Orioles, Royals, A's, or Rangers take a shot at him and let him DH? You can do a lot worse.

I could see Marcus catching on with the Mets or Braves, both needing RH power.

Good Luck Marcus. Strongest player on the Tigers. COUNTRY STRONG!

Could he have a place on the Red Sox as a fourth outfielder?

Thames has no value to the Giants...
Bay / Holliday / Willingham bats do...

Thames would be intresting in a Royals uni, if they non-tender Jacobs (which I believe is a given) he might be able to give them a little sock out of the DH and corner spots.

only way the mets pursue thames is if they go cheap in left field and go after adrian gonzalez. i doubt thames would be an option to platoon ay first base with murphy.

i meant the gonzo example via a trade obviously... but mets front office could never pull of a trade that doesnt mortgage our future

Thames would be good against national league pitching.

Matt treanor could be a good signing for the Giants. He would be a cheap back up for Posey.

55saveslives, do you really think Willingham is that much better then Thames?
Willingham batted .260 with 24 homers on 427 PAs. Career average of over 20 at bats per home run.
Thames batted .252 with 13 homers on 258 PAs. Career average of 15 at bats per home run.
Willingham's price tag is going to be far greater then Marcus's would be. Put it on a scale, what balances in your favor more? Willingham or Thames plus whatever you get with the cash saved with a cheaper, and honestly, pretty similar plater?
Either way, good luck to Thames. He was just getting squeezed out because of Mags.
