« Yankees May Let Chien-Ming Wang Leave | Main | Marlins Rumors: Lindstrom, Cantu, Uggla »
11:53am: The Mariners confirmed the news in a press release. A quote from Griffey:
I look forward to contributing in any role that Don (Wakamatsu) sees fit on the field, and any manner I possibly can off the field.
10:54am: The Mariners have reached an agreement on a one-year deal with Ken Griffey Jr., according to Larry Stone of the Seattle Times. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick says Junior's new contract is similar to last year's. SI's Jon Heyman says it's a $2MM base with incentives that could exceed $1MM. The Griffey signing did no harm a year ago, but this time around it makes less sense.
Griffey, who turns 40 soon, hit .214/.324/.411 in 454 plate appearances, earning $2MM plus incentives. He mostly served as the team's DH, logging 83 outfield innings. Griffey had arthroscopic knee surgery last month.
One ripple effect: the Mariners are presumably crossed off Hideki Matsui's list, tweets Jon Heyman. Another could be Ryan Langerhans being non-tendered, suggests U.S.S. Mariner's Dave Cameron.

this should be his last year
Posted by: johan is GOD | November 11, 2009 at 10:58 AM
COOL! Now he gets to play the Reds when they go to Washington next year.
Posted by: Ethanator99 | November 11, 2009 at 10:58 AM
shoulda retired, but I suppose this also takes a lot of traction away from the Matsui debate.
Posted by: TheDugout | November 11, 2009 at 10:58 AM
Prettiest swing in baseball.
Posted by: Ethanator99 | November 11, 2009 at 11:02 AM
Hopefully the reached an agreement to have him join their team as a radio announcer.

Matsui to the Yankees soon to follow ... told you guys the feud btw him and the pre-Madonna Ichiro would factor in somehow.
Posted by: FreeSide | November 11, 2009 at 11:07 AM
You really have to hand it to Seattle (not) they made a PR sign over helping the ballclub, signing a 100% finished ball player, vs a DH that are in over abundance this year.
Posted by: johns | November 11, 2009 at 11:13 AM
David wright, fernando martinez, jon niese, flores and brad holt(throw mejia in there if need) for felix hernandez and ichiro
Oo wt to do

I guess it's "Welcome Home Matsui!!!" now.
(either to back the Yankees or to Japan)

I believe you meant "prima donna," not to be confused with A-Rod, whose "pre-Madonna" playoff performances paled in comparison to those since he hooked up with Kate Hudson.
Posted by: cmac1973 | November 11, 2009 at 11:17 AM
Ichiro is the greatest player in the game. He should get what he wants.

I guess M's fans will get another season of Junior & Ichiro having their pre-game tickle fights.
Let's get Bay to play LF & call it an off-season!
Posted by: sp_da_man | November 11, 2009 at 11:31 AM
Bay in LF would be awesome then the M's are sure to not win!
Posted by: tinynick | November 11, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Junior's back with the M's? Since he is quintessentially useless now, I have to support the deal as an A's fan.
Langerhans nontendered just continues the cycle. WHo's next?

this is a funny thread

Another wasted year at the DH position for the Mariners. They really have no clue. Can we call them the Cubs of the Northwest?
Posted by: HoratioAlgae | November 11, 2009 at 11:58 AM
I live 2,000 miles away, but it must be dreadful to be an M's fan.
The Angels are apparently just being conceded the AL West by all three of their opponents. They could win the division with 80 wins.
Posted by: pmc765 | November 11, 2009 at 11:58 AM
No Bay dang it... unfortunately Matsui is a power LH who can't field. Better at this point in his career than Junior yes, but more expensive too. I expect our future every day DH to be able to play the field as well. Junior won't get more than 180-200 ABs unless he becomes the picture of health overnight.
Posted by: MarinerFella | November 11, 2009 at 11:59 AM
I didn't know Ichiro was dating Madonna...
Posted by: vtadave | November 11, 2009 at 12:17 PM
Are some of you serious right now?
Junior will be a bench player. He will be in a reduced role and I fully expect the M's to go get another big bat for the main DH position. He's being brought back for marketing and chemistry, while the team sacrifices less than 1 win in talent by having him spend the year on the bench, and half the season on the DL.
This is a very small impact move. If the M's are dumb enough to make him the full time DH, that'd 1) be way more ABs than he got last year 2) There is no 2, because it'll never happen.
He's going to sit on the bench. Get a clue, some of you.

Griffey can play as long as he wants. Granted, as long as he keeps those pics of Ichiro and Jack Z having their own "tickle" fight under wraps.
Posted by: BaseBallz | November 11, 2009 at 12:19 PM
It's a good move. Costs next to nothing, sells tickets, works well with Wak, and keeps Ichiro happy.
Further-
a) Ms should NOT lock into another Sexson deal for the next 5 years with Jason Bay
b) Even if they were dumb enough to do this, Griffey's blip on the salary radar screen DOES NOT adversely affect the M's ability to accomplish this
c) Matsui is NOT a significantly better option than Griffey at DH when you figure in the need for a multi-year committment and salary increase over Jr.
This is a great move. If Sweeney somehow inks a deal, and they're looking at a Griffey/ Sweeney platoon in the 3 hole again this year, there are some problems, but I can't see this being a bad deal.
Posted by: TheAntiRecruiter | November 11, 2009 at 12:25 PM
Why cant they sign Jr. and Matsui? Matsui can DH and Jr. can play left part time and the occasional DH abs.
Posted by: WindyCityWarrioe | November 11, 2009 at 12:46 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if Griffey struggles offensively and then suffers an injury and decides to retire midseason. I hope he has a good year and goes out on his own terms but given his output in 2009 and his injury history it's hard to see 2010 going well.
Posted by: pageian | November 11, 2009 at 12:48 PM
I'd like to see 1-2 STRONG additions (Harden, Penny perhaps) to the starting rotation and somehow the acquisition of a big bat.
Bullpen is amongst the best in Baseball, defense with Jack Wilson is amonsgst the best if not hte best in baseball.
The West seems open for the taking this year, and a couple killer moves could get the M's in good position for some postseason baseball
Posted by: TheAntiRecruiter | November 11, 2009 at 01:33 PM
Awful signing. Not so much from a financial perspective but from a playing time perspective.
You wasted 454 PA's last year with your DH putting up an OPS of under 750. Why repeat that mistake?
If you only want the guy from a PR perspective, surely a deal for less than $2m could have been signed.
@PMC ...
Last year 3/4's of the AL West won more than 80 games. There is no reason to assume that it will be worse this year. More likely, a team like the A's ends up having a 500 year. Mix in the Rangers with their young talent and the M's with money and a decent team and the AL West might just have all 4 teams over 500 next year.
Posted by: bjsguess | November 11, 2009 at 01:34 PM
@bjsguess, Griffey is not going to get that many PAs again.
Why the hell does everyone assume he'll be a in full time role? Look at Jr's comments, even he expects to ride the pine.
Posted by: thetaming | November 11, 2009 at 02:09 PM
If you just look at the numbers, it seems so obvious that Griffey is just done... But I love this guy! What a fantastic career he's had. I honestly don't mind seeing that swing for another year (or portion of a year, as it will probably be).
While that .735 OPS is pretty ugly, he did hit 19 HR's and 19 doubles in less than 400 AB's last season though, so it isn't all bad. Maybe he can stay healthy for a couple of months and put up some decent numbers.
Posted by: GoTribe | November 12, 2009 at 12:58 AM
Go Griffey, give them a big year, in key at bats.
