Nationals Interested In DeRosa, Gonzalez

The Nationals have expressed interest in free agents Mark DeRosa and Mike Gonzalez, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson.

Washington had the worst bullpen in baseball last year, posting a league worst 5.09 ERA in well over 500 IP. Gonzalez and his 2.42 ERA and 10.9 K/9 would be a welcome addition to the Nats' end-game picture. DeRosa, meanwhile, could be a fit for all 30 clubs given his versatility, though Ladson says the team most likely sees him as a second baseman or leftfielder.

No chance the Nats sign Derosa and if Gonzalez is offered arbitration they would be stupid to sign him. They need all the picks they can get.

The Nats picks would be protected if they signed either.

Their first round pick is protected, but their second round pick would not be.

Bill Ladson is a clueless shill. DeRosa would be a terrible for the Nats at this point.

The nats would be better served just spending money on multiple FA's to shore up that BP. Putz would be another good one for them to go after.

DeRosa will not sign with the Nats.

The Braves would get a 1st rd supplemental as well as the Nats 2nd rd pick(which is almost like a 1st rd pick anyway since they have the 1st pick in the 2nd rd)

Um jay its true that the braves would get a supp pick and a second round pick but assuming the nats get the first pick in round one, they'd subsequently get the 60 pick in round to due to the reverse order of picks every other round(not counting the supp picks)

All the more reason for the Braves to offer both Gonzalez and Soriano arbitration. The interest is out there for at least one of them to get signed. And if you get them both back on one year deals why not, we all saw what good bullpens do in the playoffs. I say go for it Nats sign away !

am I alone in thinking that the Nats are on the verge of becoming a decent team?

i have no stats to back this up, just a weird feeling.

I think you and a *few other's feel the same.
But, it all depend's on what your definition of "decent" is.

@ Swish. There is no reverse order. The Nats had the first pick of the 1st and 2nd round last year and do this year as well.

ThinkBlue - you obviously haven't seen the Nats' starting rotation lately:

John Lannan
Garrett Mock
J.D. Martin
Marco Estrada
Craig Stammen

Granted, that won't be the rotation on Opening Day and Stephen Strasburg seems like the real deal, but I think we're looking at 2012 here? Bryce Harper will help, but not until then most likely, and the team isn't going to attract any big free agents until they've built up their core. Strasburg, Zimmerman X 2, Milledge, Harper, etc. is a good start, but this team is FAR from even becoming decent.

Oh MetsRulez, why are all Mets fans such stereotypes.

i though DeRo was gonna lead the Cubs to a WS next year! hahaha

I understand what ThinkBlue is saying. I don't agree that they're on the verge of becoming a good team but I do believe they're headed in the right direction. We don't know yet how Rizzo is going to run the club but can he really be any worse than Jim Bowden? I'd be more bullish on them had it not taken the Lerners so long to force Bowden out, remember it took a scandal for them to wake up. Would they have replaced him otherwise? Obviously they should have but since they hadn't so far I would guess no. But, things happen and it looks like whether they like it or not they've got a brighter future than they were looking at just a year ago.

The Nats could def be a good team.

If they were to pick up a few 2nd tier free agents instead of the top tier ones they could be pretty solid next year maybe even threaten a little bit. Their offense is pretty good their pitching is the problem.

say they have 15 mil to work with.

try 2 back end SP's and 2 BP arms. JJ Putz and another solid arm would help anchor it.

If they could just get a rotation that has around a 4-4.5 ERA they could do a lot better than they did this year

Vtdave, Milledge is with the Pirates now. Pay attention.

fawk the nationals, my ass is more interesting, aight?

right cause the mets are so much better lol

the braves will offer gonzo arbitration (and soriano as well) and will take the picks for both of them.

if the nationals sign him, their first is protected, but since he's a type A, the braves would get a supplemental pick AND the nationals second round pick (the top of the 2nd round).

2010 is a DEEP draft and there's A LOT of high ceiling talent that can be drafted well into the 5th and 6th rounds.

if the nationals want gonzo, then sobeit. but this team needs A LOT of work.

The Braves will most definitely offer Mike Gonzalez arbitration. Things are not so clear with Soriano (since his potential salary from arbitration is twice that of Gonzalez). Nevertheless, it would take the Nats a bit of overpaying to get Gonzo to sign with them. There are no doubt contenders that will want Gonzalez (maybe as middle relief).

CF-Nyjer Morgan
2B-Christian Guzman
3B-Ryan Zimmerman
1B-Adam Dunn
LF-Josh Willingham
RF-Elijah Dukes
SS-Alberto Gonzalez/Anderson Hernandez
C-Jason Kendall

Stephen Strasbourg
John Garland
Scott Olson
Sharon Martis
Jordan Zimmerman
