Odds & Ends: Bonds, Bay, Astros, Mulder

Another stash of links for the afternoon...

  • FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal says Red Sox GM Theo Epstein will have to be creative to keep the team competitive in both the short and long-term.
  • Contrary to a report last month, Yahoo's Tim Brown says former Mets executive Tony Bernazard is not working for Scott Boras.
  • Brown talked to Barry Bonds' agent Jeff Borris, who said he has not filed retirement papers because Bonds is "not retired - he was run out of the game."
  • WEEI's Alex Speier talked to Jason Bay's agent Joe Urbon, who said "interest has been well distributed between the two leagues."
  • Astros GM Ed Wade spoke to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart about his unsettled bullpen situation.
  • Dialogue has continued between the Brewers and Mark Mulder's agent Gregg Clifton, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.
  • NPB Tracker's Patrick Newman passes along a report indicating the Braves are interested in 36 year-old Japanese righty Hidetaka Kawagoe.

Nice...a Bonds sighting.

I like the "he was run out of the game take". I'm sure his not playing the last couple years has nothing to do with his attitude, age, contract demands, and declining skill-set.

Who cares what the astros bullpen looks like they're not going to win that many games anyway not with Mclame(Mclane) lowering payroll even more cheap bastard.

Aj:

I dont know how any person with any intelligence at all can call the Astros cheap (over $100 mil. payroll) when their are teams like the Marlins out there....in fact out of all of the teams in the majors, the Astros have a higher payroll then more than half of them.....you lose.

He would have played for league minimum for any team and he was still somewhat decent.

Bonds would have been better than 2/3 the DH's in the AL the past 2 years.

As Darion pointed out, he publicly stated that he would play for league minimum. His agent even added to that, saying that Bonds would donate the league minimum salary to charity.

Bonds would be an upgrade at virtually every OF position for the 2010 San Francisco Giants. The man was run out of the game...

Two things: 1. A Bonds sighting is like coming across Big Foot, you know he's out there, but where? Haha 2. Why do the Braves have interest in an aging Japanese righty? We already have one. And more pitching is not the solution to making the playoffs.

you obviously dont know what i mean Mickey Mac he could easily raise the payroll to 120-130 million range without even putting a dent in his pocket. Okay they have a 100 million dollar payroll and still have to go thru arbitration with several players and have to worry about the bullpen and get some pitching and he is still trying to lower the payroll. The guy is cheap tell me what other owner does not let u take food into the ballpark because it is not Houston tradition what kind of crap is that pay 8 dollars for a hot dog and almost 10 dollars for a beer its insane then he tries to encourage fans to come and see the games when he is not even putting enough to have a championship caliber team his motto is to be competitive but we want a championship team not just one that is just competitive. How can you even be competitive with the how the team is right now he knows the team needs alot of more pieces but he still is lowering the payroll. THE GUY IS CHEAP!!!!!

A quick add, I took a look at Kawagoe's numbers. The guy's career stats are: 51-73 record, 4.04 ERA, 280 BB's, 721 K's, throws no higher than 92mph, and hasn't had a winning record since 2000! Why would there be interest?

uhm i'll be honest id like to see bonds come back only if he gets drug tested weekly

Why do the Braves want another japanese pitcher? Especially a mediocre one..

your argument is with wins? wins is probably the most pointless stat for a pitcher, its all about the WHIP and ERA

I see the Braves bringing him on as bullpen depth, nothing more.
He shouldn't cost too much, and could be the same thing Okajima was to Dice, but for Kawakami. Another Japanese player in the clubhouse might relax K.K, and help him adjust to America a little better.

As for Bond's, I hope that S.O.B come's back to the game, sign's with a team, and get's back on steroid's and is finally caught in the act.
Busted by 4-5 player's/coaches with their camera-phone's recording. This time, action might be more swift, and the game will no longer hear jack-$hit about him returning to the game. 755 is still the record in my book.

"I like the "he was run out of the game take". I'm sure his not playing the last couple years has nothing to do with his attitude, age, contract demands, and declining skill-set."

Yeah, he declined really hard to a 1.045 OPS in 2007. Just terrible.

The single biggest travesty in MLB history is not the 1919 Black Sox scandal, Pete Rose, the rampant cocaine use during the 1980s, or the steroid problem... It's the owners' collective decision to deprive me of the privilege of watching the greatest hitter since Babe Ruth for a couple more years... Unforgiveable.

Why are people still bitching about Bonds 3 yrs after the fact? It's already proven that just about everyone is on some kind of roid or HGH enhancement...He is far from the only one that lied!

Get over it!

"uhm i'll be honest id like to see bonds come back only if he gets drug tested weekly"

Why, so he won't fail another drug test?

Oh yeah, that's right.

Bonds was tested for 5 years 03-07. I wonder if he is on the list of 100 or so who tested positive with A-rod, Manny, and Ortiz in 03. To bad the Giants couldn't have him DH for inter-league play.

You're kidding.

McLane had the 4th highest payroll in the league, and you're upset because you think he needs to up it another 20%? And that is what is holding the team back? He spent over $100mill last year per baseball-reference.com. It was just spent poorly. Spending even more money equally poorly is not the solution.

If you watched someone spend $100 of yours and get nothing for it, would you decide to give them another $20? If so, can I borrow some cash?

Yeah sure, the Brewers will go after Mulder and after they sign him, they will start talking Kenny Rogers

and no thanks Japan, you can keep that guy. We're all set over here

NYBravosFan, may I assume that you don't think the Brewers will go after Mulder? If that is what you think, you've got another thing coming. Brewers GM Doug Melvin has been in almost constant contact with Mulder's agent, Gregg Clifton. Those of us who are Brewers fans have read enough of our local reports and things from Doug Melvin to realize that the Brewers' signing of Mark Mulder is pretty much an inevitability. In fact, we've been talking about signing him since before the season ended.

well said dunkindonuts, u said it perfectly. couldn't have put it better myself.

Oh, Barry Bonds... You poor, sweet, misunderstood man.

Barry, you really want to play? Sign with an Independent League team.. Show that you still have something in the tank. Show that you aren't the total prick everybody KNOWS you are. Show that you can help youngsters out. Show that you can stay healthy enough to DH.

... Or you can just sit there and be a whiny-b*tch, as usual.

I don't even think that Barry Bonds actually wants to play, he just wants to feel like a victim.

Bonds is one of my least-favorite athletes of all-time because he is always trying to gather pity for himself and NOTHING is ever his fault.. Biggest freakin' crybaby in the world.

i used to be bat boy. i would see and hear more info then you could imagine. i can guarantee you more than 90% of players. especially pitchers used steriods. manny, when he was with cleveland used steriods, and kyle farnsworth used to be called quadzilla because his legs were so big from roids. i am a giants fan, and i know he didn't use them. just ask him. he'll tell you. kidding. everyone knows he did.

You know it could also be that the Braves may want to trade Kawakami and by bringing in another Japanese player they hope to keep the fans interested in the team...

Bonds, you are a media hungry JOKE.

I agree with GoTribe, if Bonds really wants to play be like Rickey Henderson and sign with an independant team and earn your way back to the bigs.

I for one don't want to see Bonds, or as i like to call him, CHEATER, back in baseball.

All those who don't think he took steroids, you are just lying to yourself. His body changed so much from when he was hitting a ton of home runs to when he came up from the minors. His shoe size increased from a 10 1/2 to a 13, hat size increased and uniform size increased.

Bonds, stay home!

Not that I don't believe Bonds took steroids, but can ANY of you show me proof that his head size and shoe size grew? I hear these things thrown out by fat slob fans all the time, yet I'm sure that none of them have ever come within 100 feet of Bonds.

openid and GoTribe-

Simple minded fools like you make me laugh. Tell me your team and I'll name 5 players that are currently taking steroids, whom you undoubtedly cheer for from the cheeto infested couch in your dingy pathetic apartment.

i don't know anything really about steriods. you think the thing a-rod had on his hip was his injection spot?

JT,

... OK.

Please show me in my post where I mention steroids. I'll save you the time of reading it (or actually reading it for a first time, as it would seem): it's not mentioned... at all.

I think Bonds is a big whiner, he thinks the whole world is out to get him and he constantly complains.. Didn't say a thing about steroids.

I do enjoy reading other people's opinions and even being disagreed with.. But I think you missed the entire point of my post.

Oh, and I live in a nice home and I don't care for Cheetos... Well, the Flamin' Hot ones are OK, but I still don't like the way they get stuck in my teeth so I avoid them.
