« Heyman's Latest: Lackey, Tigers, Reds | Main | Diamondbacks Will Consider Multi-Year Pitching Options »

Odds & Ends: Griffey, Tigers, Torrealba

Let's have a look at another handful of evening links....

  • MLB.com's Corey Brock reports that new Padres GM Jed Hoyer will sit down with Adrian Gonzalez next week to discuss the first baseman's future.
  • Keith Law of ESPN.com shares his thoughts on the trades that have transpired so far during the hot stove season.
  • Scott Miller of CBS Sports wraps up his observations from the GM meetings, and includes a quote from Angels GM Tony Reagins, saying the team will try their best to retain both John Lackey and Chone Figgins. I think they'd be doing very well if they were able to bring back even one of the two.
  • What do the Cleveland Indians need to do to improve in 2010? The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Paul Hoynes suggests that, considering the team's lack of payroll flexibility, the Indians just have to hope for better performances from many of their players.
  • In comments relayed by Larry Stone of the Seattle Times, Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik was vague when asked about Ken Griffey Jr.'s playing time in 2010. Griffey and the Mariners reached an agreement earlier today, but it sounds like Junior could have a lesser role next season -- particularly if the team is able to retain Russell Branyan and add another bat or two.
  • Despite recent rumors about the availability of Curtis Granderson and Edwin Jackson, the Detroit Tigers don't intend to have a fire sale, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck (via Twitter).
  • Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune says that if Granderson is available, the Cubs need to pursue him.
  • Troy Renck of the Denver Post has additional details on Yorvit Torrealba's possible future with the Colorado Rockies.
  • After hearing Scott Boras compare Matt Holliday to last winter's big free agent prize, Mark Teixeira, Dave Cameron of FanGraphs takes a detailed look at how the two players' values compare.
  • ESPN.com's Buster Olney tweets that a few GMs came away from this week's meetings thinking that the market for the elite free agents this year will be "very, very limited."
  • Ever the optimist, Scott Boras disagrees with this assessment of the market, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Boras argues that "we hear this every year" and predicts that the top free agents will still receive "mega-contracts."

Spot DH duty, definite pinch hit option, minimal outfield work is what I expect from Griffey. In this role Griffey should do just fine. The PR aspect of this is also a factor in resigning the Marniners most beloved players.

"Scott Boras compare Matt Holliday to last winter's big free agent prize, Mark Teixeira"

Yeah ok, one can hit in the AL the other couldnt. Holliday is good, but he aint all that special. I feel badfor whateve team signs him. Hopefullly the Yankees dont.

Matt Holliday compared to Mark Teixeira?? Wow then Matt Holliday is one of the most OVERRATED players EVER! He's not even a SHADOW of Big Tex.

I wish Griffey stayed healthy his whole career...He'd have the HR record for sure an baseball wouldn't have to worry bout cheaters takin the crown...Bonds, A-roid etc..

Griffey has the sweetest swing in baseball

Its unfortunate but everyone knows that Holliday will bag a 100+ million contract....Bora$$ is a greedy F^%$...but he gets his clients paid

It's amazing there are rumors about the Tigers trading Granderson and Edwin Jackson (two worthwhile pieces to retain at reasonable salaries) to cut payroll while they are stuck with some of the worst contracts in baseball. If this isn't an indictment of Dombrowski's failures, I don't know what is.

WEZ

Colorado effect aside ... to suggest that Holliday is a chump is a little unfair. Remember, that Tex played a bulk of his career in a bandbox as well.

Age 24 seasons (limited AB's for Holliday):
Tex - 281/370/560 - 38 HRs
Hol - 290/349/488 - 14 HRs

Age 25 seasons (limited AB's for Holliday):
Tex - 301/379/575 - 43 HRs
Hol - 307/361/505 - 19 HRs

Age 26 seasons:
Tex - 282/371/514 - 33 HRs
Hol - 326/387/586 - 34 HRs

Age 27 seasons:
Tex - 306/400/563 - 30 HRs
Hol - 340/405/607 - 36 HRs

Age 28 seasons:
Tex - 308/410/552 - 33 HRs
Hol - 313/394/515 - 25 HRs

Then you can look at numbers from the All-Star break on for the 2 guys in 2009:

Tex - 313/390/601
Hol - 356/420/625

Keep in mind that Tex benefited from playing in an absurd HR park in NY while Holliday was slugging it out in Oakland and St Louis. His 2nd half was epic (thanks in large part to Pujols).

The players are 4 months apart in age. They have both benefited from playing a bulk of their careers in pitcher friendly parks.

I think Tex is the better player but the gap isn't that wide. Given Tex's higher propensity for power and his outstanding glove work he should be worth 10% or so more than Holliday. That still equals a big pay day for Holliday.

"He'd have the HR record for sure an baseball wouldn't have to worry bout cheaters takin the crown"

I wouldn't be so sure. Griffey was anything but a workout monster, yet he always looked pretty ripped. Lots of soft tissue injuries, too.

I would take Holliday over Tex anyday.

How soon before adrain gonzalez is traded? thats if he does get traded.

Kinda hard decision bout who'd i take, but i would probably take Holliday becuz of a higher BA and CI that produce are a dime a dozen

Holliday most overrated ever???? wow.. although boras should compare the two as big tex was over paid last year.. and he'll be looking for the same w holliday.. in holliday's defense.. TEX PLAYS fist.. where an argument could be made he isn't even a top 5 first basemen.. Holliday's production in left is second 2 none over the last few years

I would take Holliday over Tex anyday.

Haha thats funny.

teixeira, the gold glove first baseman, is not in the top 5.

you obviously dont watch yankee baseball- he made coutless game saving defensive plays and played just outstanding defense this year

And here is how other firstbasemen fared defensively, according to the UZR rankings:

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=1b&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=0&season=2009&month=0

Texiera is a top 5 first baseman behind Pujols (of course. He's on the same level, if not better then the Prince, A-Gon, and Joe Mauer.

Holliday is the best Left Fielder in the majors.

I'd love to build a team around either one, but give me Tex any day of the week.

Halos gonna only keep one of em

UZR is a horrible rating for 1B and C. Just ask any expert

@ Diehardmets

Uh, I get the Prince and A Gon comparison, but Joe Mauer? The guy is a catcher...Mauer is way more valuable than Teixeria, what are you talking about?

Teixiera's glove is good when he is on, but he has a history of off years. Check PM over UZR to confirm.

The Holliday vs Texeira comp. isn't ridiculous. Tex is likely the better hitter given Holliday's dependency on an unsustainably high BABIP as Cameron pointed out but the gap isn't too big. Throw in the fact that Matt is a LF instead of 1B and plays good defense out there (i really don't want to hear about how you just "know" he's not a good defender bc you've seen it) and the value should be fairly similar. I think his struggles are more due to Oakland's stadium and not the league but he's definitely the risker option going forward so he shouldn't match Tex's money

Texiera isn't on the same level as Prince or Adrian Gonzalez. Defensively there's no one better, but offensively the other two could both end their careers with hall of fame numbers.

Texiera isn't on the same level as Adrian Gonzo or Prince. Defensively there's no one better, but the other two have a good shot to put up hall of fame numbers.

if the padres trade adrian gonzalez they might as well just pack it in. I wouldn't support a team that did that.

"Texiera isn't on the same level as Adrian Gonzo or Prince. Defensively there's no one better, but the other two have a good shot to put up hall of fame numbers."

Adrian Gonzalez and Prince Fielder aren't incomparable to Teixeira as you make it out to seem.
Teixeira (career) .290/.378/.545/.923
Fielder (career) .284/.381/.550/.931
Gonzalez (career) .281/.362/.506/.869

Gonzalez and Fielder may have a bit more pop but they aren't way better by any stretch factor in Tex's defense and you get a easily a top 5 1B.

IMO the yanks need Lackey. I don't think Burnett is a reliable enough number 2 in the AL East moving forward. Pettite's done. Sabbathia, Lackey, Burnett, Joba, Hughes...

Yanks should sign Lackey and trade for Fransisco Cordero to set up for Rivera. They do that, they should be like 2-1 to repeat.

The Jays would be really stupid to trade Halladay within the division. There's very little I'd trade him for if we're talking about the Yanks or Red Sox.

Fielder and Gonzalez are both 50 hr guys at Yankee Stadium without a doubt...Prince maybe 60. Texiera's also played in his prime for a few more seasons than Fielder or Gonzo, so the career lines are skewed. Tex isn't in their league.

You also forgot to mention that Fielder and Gonzalez play in the much weaker NL when other than that brief stint in Atlanta Tex has played his entire career in the AL. It's not a big stretch to compare them as you are making it out to be. Teixeira is certainly in the same company as them.

Don't forget Tex is also a switch hitter.

I agree that the market will be substantially weaker this year than ever before.

Not because of the economy, but because of the Yankees.

Even if Holliday was as talented as Tex (which he is not), there would not be 1 team on which he would be the difference maker.

I say this because, as good as Tex is, he is not the reason the Yanks won the W.S this year.

Without A-Rod, Sabathia, Jeter, Damon, Rivera, Burnett etc. (all $15M+/year players), the Yanks wouldn't have won.

If you are the owner or GM of another team, I'd think you would be more likely to look at teams that have suffered under the weight of mega contracts given to 1 player while the rest of the team had to be sold off to pay for the player then you would be to look at the Tex deal and say; one player can win you a world series.

Bottom line: You can't outspend the Yankees so you have to outbuild them. The only way to do that is to not get involved with mega contracts which limit your ability to sign your top young players to reasonable long term contracts.

The Rockies would be in far better shape if they could have signed Holliday/Fuentes long term instead of footing the bill for Helton. The Blue Jays will probably have to deal Halladay because they are stuck with Vernon Wells. The Giants have been handcuffed for the last few years with Zito. The Mariners got lucky with Johjima this year, especially because they had been limited for years due to Sexson's bad deal.

The amount of decently bank-rolled mid-size market teams that haven't been able to compete in years will just grow if one of them jumps on Holliday or even Bay for a Mega Contract.

I'd think by now these teams would know to leave these players up to the big market clubs that can afford to have the player not work out.
