There's no such thing as an offseason- just different kinds of on-seasons.
- Todd Zolecki of MLB.com believes the Phillies will find a replacement for Eric Bruntlett among John McDonald, Omar Vizquel, Jamey
Carroll, Ronnie Belliard and Juan
Uribe.
- According to Scott Olsen, arbitration-eligible member of the Washington Nationals (for now, anyway), his shoulder is now 100 percent.
- Larry Stone of the Seattle Times discusses how Edwin Jackson, Curtis Granderson, and John Lackey would look in Seattle.
- Tyler Hissey at Around the Majors talks Yankees' roster strategy.
- Dave Cameron tells us which minor league free agents are most worth pursuing, including Ruben Gotay.
- Dan Dibley of KNBR, the Giants' flagship station, weighs in on a number of topics in an interview with SFGiantsbaseball.net.
Anything's better than Bruntlett, but boy I'd prefer Adam Kennedy to that collection of guys.

I was basically just about to post the same comment you did there.

Boy, the Mariners would be pretty entertaining if they got all 3 of them.

Don't know much about Seattle's financial situation but what do you think they could get Lackey for? Can they make the $100M offer?
But, damn, Hernandez-Lackey-Jackson is pretty nice.

Add in Snell and you have a scary 1-4.

Edwin Jackson-

Anyone buying 'high' on Edwin Jackson is going to be sorely disappointed by his regression to his mean.

Aumont at 5?

Vizquel should be a Met. Great defensive sub and a leader. Hima an Hinske along with Pagan and the backup catcher on the Mets bench looks pretty nice. And relatively cheap.

Mariners fans are getting ahead of themselves. We aren't about to jump into any major signing unless the player's name is Felix.

Not totally. If they are major players for Lackey I fear Felix's days in Seattle maybe numbered. They had a major improvement last year.. if they trade Felix they need someone to step up and pick up the slack. Not that Lackey is anyways equal to Felix. But, at least they have a decent numero uno.
Anyways, the average fan would have a hard time understanding the Felix trade. Lackey would be just to soften the blow and hope to put together another competitive team and await the "King's Ransom" of prospects Seattle receives, to be ready to compete at the ML level.

Swapping Felix for Lackey would be a huge mistake, and a huge downgrade, regardless of what you had to pay Felix.
Lackey is 8(!) years older than Felix. I guarantee any 5-year contract with Lackey will contain at least 2 disappointing years.
Felix however is being bought out in his absolute prime. He won't even be out of his prime at the end of his contract. He's 23 years old.
The risk between the two contracts cannot be understated. Go through MLB history and you'll see that high-price ace starters on the free agent market almost always underachieve.

Posted by: baseball52 | November 16, 2009 at 09:37 PM
I agree, but for some reason they are breeding Aumont to be a closer or set up man.....kinda stupid with Fields (who is only a closer) coming up too!
I'd say one of those two are probable trade bait!

Depends on the pitcher, Gary. While it was only for a year, CC didn't disappoint the Yanks.
plus, the prime of a player is usually accepted as being the ages of 27-34. In effect, he hasn't even entered his prime yet.

The M's have 50M off the books this year, considering an extension would pay Felix at the most 15M this year and then will rise in the coming years on the contract.
If Lackey does get his 100M contract over say 5 years, then thats 35M spent on Felix and Lackey this year and maybe 40-45M next (raise in Felix's salary brings it up).
Now take the 12M Carlos Silva is owed through 2012 and it covers the larger part of Felix's contract once he is through his arbitration years.
That means that in 2010 you have at the most 35M spent on Lackey/Felix, leaving you 15M to find your power bat.
And if the M's show winning ways and the front offices continues to show sound decision making, ownership would probably raise payroll (do not forget Seattle is not a small market team).
So finance is not an issue for the M's.

And I think Lackey getting 20M a year is highly doubtful.
Posted by: M's fan 16 | November 16, 2009 at 11:12 PM
I agree Gary. I would take Felix over any other pitcher in baseball right now. But, I think that is they pay w/e it takes to get Lackey, it might be a sign of bad negotiations with Felix, or that he has said that he wants to test the free agent market.
Posted by: Mfan4ever | November 16, 2009 at 11:29 PM
I don't think signing Lackey is a sign of negotiations breaking down with Felix, it could be the front office trying to show Felix they are willing to go get players to help win now. You guys could be right though.
Posted by: M's fan 16 | November 16, 2009 at 11:34 PM
I do hope that's the sign. That its just to show Felix they're serious about winning. But I think they'd go after a power bat if that was the sign. Say look we got a decent staff, we got a defense, lets score some runs now.
Posted by: Mfan4ever | November 16, 2009 at 11:38 PM
I agree 100%, and those numbers in my first post are the MAXIMUM they spend on Felix/Lackey.
If the M's do pick up Lackey will be for a more realistic 16-18M, then Felix extension will most likely pay him around 12M (because its more than his arb will get him).
So thats possibly 20M-22M to spend on offense.
Posted by: M's fan 16 | November 16, 2009 at 11:46 PM
That is very possible, mfan and M's fan. I'm guessing the power bat is either Bay or Holliday then, along with Branyan?
Not gonna lie-seeing Ichiro-Branyan-Gutierrez-Bay/Holliday as the top 4 batters (not sure of the order) would vastly improve the offense.
