« Angels Sign GM Tony Reagins To Extension | Main | Pirates Designate Three For Assignment »
4:32pm: MLB.com's Todd Zolecki tweets more info on the Phillies. He says that if Matt Stairs returns, it would be a minor league deal. The team will wait to see how Scott Eyre's elbow surgery turns out. And they've contacted Chan Ho Park's agent about a possible new contract.
1:33pm: Pitcher Brett Myers was told today by Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. that the team will not pursue a new contract with him, according to Jim Salisbury of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Myers told Salisbury he's open to starting or relieving with his new club.
Myers, 29, posted a 4.84 ERA in 70.6 innings this year. The Phillies' Opening Day starter missed time with hip surgery and a back strain. He could be an interesting buy-low opportunity for many teams.

Wonder where he goes

Brett Myers is a P.O.S.

Brewers pick him up, garunteed.
Posted by: sharx | November 06, 2009 at 01:36 PM

STAY AWAY OMAR!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Jspencer8 | November 06, 2009 at 01:43 PM
I am surprise that Ruben already said this. I thought Myers would resign on a 1 year deal because of his potential to close. This must mean Amaro has something better up his sleeve- either a trade or signing of a starter or the signing of a setup guy that can close- ie mike gonzalez or rafeal soriano
Posted by: Chris | November 06, 2009 at 01:46 PM
I'm surprised by this. I thought he'd resign with a low cost/low risk/incentive based deal.
Posted by: Agent | November 06, 2009 at 01:48 PM
I think he's going to be an Astro. Either the closer or the #3 starter. Ed Wade loves to go after his old guys.
I wouldn't mind him as a closer option for us after Valverde walks for the right price.
Posted by: native_astro | November 06, 2009 at 01:51 PM
Myers is gonna end up with the Red Sox. He fits the bill of the low risk - high reward signings that Epstein usually commits to. Offer him a low base, high incentive offer for days on the roster and starts made. Myers can be a quite useful pitcher on a good day. He just needs a little shot of confidence. My bet is he's a Red Sox by the end of next week.
Posted by: Baseball=Happiness | November 06, 2009 at 01:53 PM
Astros are a possibility. Anybody think he'll land with the Brewers? They need all the help in the world with their rotation. With his injury problems, they might be able to get him cheap.
Posted by: Agent | November 06, 2009 at 01:56 PM
What's the negative side of Myers? I've watched him a few games and I've always felt he had the upside, when healthy, to be a solid MOR pitcher.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | November 06, 2009 at 01:57 PM
Brewers are possibility. If they're reaching out to Mark Mulder then Meyers could be a fit as well.
Posted by: native_astro | November 06, 2009 at 01:58 PM
Well, the negative side is that he's a childish bully jock who punched a woman in the face, making him 10x a worse person than Milton Bradley, who has never laid his hands on a woman before.

Agreed. I would like to see him in an Astros uniform. Preferably as a starter, but a bullpen option wouldn't be bad.
Sign him to an incentive laden deal, with no more than $3 MM guaranteed, and the Astros rotation wouldn't look too shabby:
1) Oswalt
2) Rodriguez
3) Myers
4) Norris
5) Paulino/Moehler
I'll take that...
Posted by: thered86 | November 06, 2009 at 02:07 PM
The negative side is that he's barely a league average pitcher in the NL. Who cried about saying he belongs as a closer when he struggled in the rotation last year, after being a starter in the majors for the last 5 years. But he's a FA so surprise he's willing to start or be a reliever.
There's also the decreasing K9 rate, decreasing K/BB rate, rising H9, HR9- all in the NL.
And the wife-beating.

Dodgers, Rangers, Brewers, Stro's, Mets, Red Sox, Yankees. Those are my guesses for top destinations. I think the Dodgers grab him and one of Rich Harden or Ben Sheets.
Posted by: bravesbacker11 | November 06, 2009 at 02:10 PM
I don't think he dragged his wife by the hair, but he definitely punched her in the face. He also got a black eye right before making a rehad start and lied to the team saying he hurt himself getting out of his truck when he was actually punched in the eye at a bar. He is a scum bag and a hot head who has shown he can be a very good pitcher or a 4th or 5th starter. If you can get him on the cheap and don't mind the headache then go for it. Otherwise as a Phillies fan I would say you are better off investing your money somewhere else.
Posted by: rexy21 | November 06, 2009 at 02:14 PM
yeah, The dragged by the hair was for effect...hes a complete loser..Im sure Theo will pass on him..he usually brings in good character guys, not jokers like Myers..
Posted by: chowdah | November 06, 2009 at 02:17 PM
I LOVE the people who say he fits the low-risk/high-reward signings of Theo Epstein.
Umm, excuse me, if I may trouble you for a moment:
Isn't that the type of signing EVERYONE goes for? Theo Epstein signs Brad Penny and John Smoltz, spends about $11million between the two of them, gets nothing in return, and people applaud him for his signings because, well, they were low risk signings. Since when did $11 million for ANY TEAM become low risk?
Long story short, $11 million isn't low-risk, and low-risk/high-reward signings are not Red Sox-specific.

" don't think he dragged his wife by the hair"
"Witnesses told police Myers dragged his wife by the hair and slapped her across the face.... Courtney Knight, 26, who witnessed the alleged attack, said in an interview today that Myers was out of control. "It was disgusting," Knight said. "He was dragging her by the hair and slapping her across the face. She was yelling, 'I'm not going to let you do this to me anymore.' "

Unfortunately, his wife had the prosecution not press charges because she was drinking too, like thats an excuse for beating your wife up?

Something tells me his previous encounter with Red Sox fans will make him consider avoiding the AL all together.

Hamels is an immature person. Myers is just a bad guy in general.

Posted by: chowdah | November 06, 2009 at 02:27 PM
"I don't think he dragged his wife by the hair, but he definitely punched her in the face."
Oh, he did drag her by the hair. It is documented and witnesses to boot. Myers also got into it with a reporter because he was in a foul mood and did not like the questions. While I do think someone had to give Hamels a wake up call for being a boo-hoo primadonna, Myers has anger issues.

He who is without sin shall cast the first stone? I love all the judgement being passed around here. Horrible person, loser, joker... this is how some of you decide to label a guy you've never met based on a 2006 incident? Guess I shouldn't be surprised, this is the internet.
Being in the Philly market and having watched Myers the last few years, I feel safe in saying he's a pretty good teammate. He sticks up for his players, and he plays hard. The game matters to him. The incident in Boston was disgusting and he is known to have a bit of a temper, but some of you should exercise a bit of self-reflection before hammering this guy to death years after the fact.
As a pitcher, he'll be fine in the NL. He's a MOTR starter or 8/9 inning guy in the pen. He's HR prone in the CBP bandbox, but get him into a bigger park and you'll see a sub 4.00 ERA. And as I said, as a teammate, you could do worse than Brett Myers.
And for Dodger blue who suggested trading Cole Hamels and keeping Myers... is that a joke? It sure seems like some of you don't know how to dig beneath the surface of things like Wins and Losses and see what was really going on. This isn't MLB The Show on your Playstion or your fantasy baseball team. Guys like Cole Hamels are not traded after one sub par year. Get a grip.
Posted by: HollywoodHamels | November 06, 2009 at 02:44 PM
No thanks for Myers to the Cubs, Dubs! Hendry would not take that type of personality when they already have to deal Milton. Myers makes Milton look good.
Posted by: studio179 | November 06, 2009 at 02:45 PM
Brewers and Astros should go for him but that's about it. Things will heat up between these two teams but in the end the Astros should come out on top. Meyers to Astros done deal. No other teams I think will have interest in Meyers.
Posted by: Whalersfan | November 06, 2009 at 02:50 PM
I was just trying to knock my fellow sox fans. No offense.
Boston has been made out to sound like a "drop kick murphy's" song, and Myers would fit perfect in that crowd.

Probably because you're too busy being completely judgemental of others to have time to do such a thing. Pass on Myers. The guy just gives up way too many HRs, and it's not just a CBP problem. His "most similar pitchers" list is littered with guys who were essentially washed up at Myers' age: Scott Erickson, Jamie Navarro, Len Barker, Melido Perez...
He'll kick around the league for a few more years, maybe put up one more league-average season somewhere, but I don't see much of a future for him.

Nope, never knocked the crap out of a women. I'm sure Chris Brown is a nice guy, too. Doesn't mean I approve of the actions.
I like the fact Myers let 'Hollywood Hamels' know he did not like Cole's BS attitude during the World Series. Good job on that one!

Myers lives in Jacksonville, FL. Perhaps he will sign with the Marins?
I see potential suitors being (in no order):
Dodgers
Brewers
Astros
Rockies
Rangers
Rays
Twins
Tigers
Mets
Cardinals

I was living in Boston when the Myers hitting fiasco happened. I root for the team over any one player, so I can't really say that I am biggest Myers fan personally, but I do find it funny that Red Sox fans had a huge problem with this, but never mentioned the fact that Julio Lugo did the same thing to his wife.
If only Lugo could hit the ball like that.

Myers beats his wife. more importantly he gives up the homerun ball. he is mediocre at best, the 12-6 curve, while is might be above average, he seems to enjoy throwing the fast ball right down the middle of the plate. Hamels, who has a 3 year contract, will not be traded this offseason or next. unless of course we find someone that will pick up his 6.5mil a year or we let him go and pay him anyways (as in the spectacular case of the fan favorite adam eaton). hamels is here, myers is gone and this was no surprise. In regards to their little drama in the locker room--my very first thought before i even heard the entire story was--its irrelevant because myers wont be here next season. and can i get a phillie fan to respond to this--i dont think victorino gets a contract this year. he currently does not have one and i think the organization is looking to bring in one of their OF prospects sooner than later--mayberry, brown, taylor. After all these guys werent even seriously considered being dealt to toronto for halladay. I see the phils maybe throwin out a small figure, not what victorino is worth on the trade market. thoughts?

Any man who puts a violent hand on a woman is a scumbag, a lesser man, a child. Brett Meyers is that person.
@HollywoodHamels
grow up, your posts in this thread make me sick.
Posted by: PL | November 06, 2009 at 04:53 PM
I think there's a high likelihood he signs with the Rockies. O'Dowd always likes to bring in veteran pitchers to help balance out the rotation/bullpen. With the exit of Jason Marquis I think Myers is a great suitor for O'Dowd to go after. There is a high risk/reward opportunity for Myers, and he will not warrant an astronomical contract given his recent production..
We will see, but I can definitely see this happening.
Posted by: jayrox | November 06, 2009 at 05:13 PM
I see Myers trying to bounce back in the NL west very similarly to the way Penny did. I see a one year 1-2mil deal from dodgers/giants/padres, maybe d'backs, probably not rockies. I also see the brewers in the mix, but don't see him landing in Milwaukee.
Posted by: Leland11 | November 06, 2009 at 05:22 PM
brett myers where be a good fit in new york for the mets or yankees.because he a very good pitcher and he should get a 3 year deal.

No one has to agree with his actions. As a player though, I don't get why they wouldn't give him a small offer to stay in the bullpen as a possible plan B to Lidge. Seems that they shouldn't have let him just walk away.

I want ROY and if i have to trim payroll to make it happen I do. I trade Ibanez and platoon Francisco with Dobbs or another FA vet LH OF. I trade Brown or Taylor and Hammels with maybe another through in or two to make it happen.
Bottom line is when it comes to playoff time do I want Ibanez in LF with Blanton or a guy like Pedro on the hill? or do I want Franciso in LF with ROY on the mound. I figure you have as close to a guarantee of 3 wins as you can get if with ROY and Lee on the hill twice in a series. So you need 1 win out the other 3 games if those 2 simply don't win both of there games
Posted by: pb | November 06, 2009 at 06:02 PM
you say wife beater like it happens all the time. it happened once. once is to many in my book but don't make it sound like its a daily thing.
to not look at him for the phils is not the smartest thing, he a good relief pitcher when healthy and also could be a solid plan b in case Lidge doesn't recover

"What does it do?" It gives you 2 stud pitchers Roy is the closest to a sure thing as you can get. What is the point of trading Cole for prospects? This Phillies core is in there prime now and for next 2 possibly 4 years. You have to field the best team you possibly can for those years. Roy just happens to be perhaps the best pitcher in the game, on the block, and in the same division as his mostly suitors if he becomes a FA. He's gotta wanna win at this time in his career, the easiest way is through the NL. It's a perfect match

As far as offseason moves go the Phils should re-sign Park, bring Stairs back on a minor league offer, let Feliz walk and go after Beltre. Sure up the bullpen with the accquisition of Valverde as well as some middle relief help in Betancourt. Try and coax Eyre out of retirement if possible and revamp the bench adding Jamey Carroll, a major upgrade over Bruntlett, to supplant Utley and Beltre. Another issue that needs to be addressed is the starting rotation. Lee is really the only definite. Beyond him its a mess. Questions still remains as to Jamie Moyer's role on this team in addition to the headcase known as Cole Hamels. Blanton's prob ur number 4 or 5 guy if not for the fact that the current rotation is overloaded with lefties. To alleviate this matter I think Amaro should go after a guy like Duchscherer as the number 5. Offer him a incentive laden contract as in the case of Pedro. Rotation looks like this:
Lee
Hamels (hope 4 a rebound)
Blanton
Happ/Moyer
Duchsherer
If Duchsherer doesnt work out you got Drabek waiting in the wings as well as Moyer, of course assuming he excepts his role in the bullpen.

"making him 10x a worse person than Milton Bradley, who has never laid his hands on a woman before."
Puleeze. Obviously you weren't following the Dodgers during the "Bradley years" before he was traded for Andre Ethier. There were multiple calls to his home, and a quick Internet search turned up this little nugget:
"Police have responded to the Redondo Beach home of Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Milton Bradley three times this summer on domestic violence calls, including one instance in which he allegedly choked his pregnant wife, bloodied her lip and hurled a cellular telephone into a wall," Altman writes.
Sure, no conviction and we really don't know what happened, but I guess it's just those crazy white LAPD officers looking for someone to bust, right?
Posted by: vtadave | November 06, 2009 at 08:21 PM
Re-signing Park should be a priority, he was excellent outof the Pen.
I would go after Beltre or Glaus at 3rd. Belliard would be a nice replacement over Bruntlett.
Torrealba would also be a great back-up catcher to Ruiz.
Trading Hamels would be a disaster.. If we do go after Roy, Happ seems to be the one to trade followed with either Taylor or Brown and a smaller tiered prospect.
taylor is ready now with no place to play... Brown wil be ready just when Ibanez's contract ends.. so I would rather keep Brown.
Drabek should be ready by mid-season too.. do not trade him or Brown.
Joel Pineiro, Bedard, Marquis, should also be looked at.
Figgans too if we can afford him.. though Beltre ha power, speed and 2 Gold Gloves, Glaus has power and a better glove than Figgans too.. But can you imagine Figgans at leadoff?
Which would you rather see?
1) Figgans
2) Victorino
3) Utley
4) Howard
5) Werth
6) Ibanez
7) Rollins
8) Ruiz
or
1) Rollins
2) Victorino
3) Utley
4) Howard
5) Werth
6) Ibanez
7) Beltre or Glaus
8) Ruiz

beltre is where its at. the phils arent going make all these moves. belliard and torrealba are fulltime players on lower level teams. Moyer will start in the rotation until they get into a tight contention with mets or braves. Moyer is already owed money so they will use him early in the season in some capacity, probably as a starter. They still need to lock up ruiz, blanton and happ. i believe all 3 of them were only under 1 year contracts for the 2009 season. I agree, give park a deal also cause he can start or be a bullpen guy. I think that some of the fans of other teams are worse than the media sometimes! One says he got the black eye from a fight at the bar...not true, cops said no fight occured. Said he drug his wife by the hair and punched her in the face...not true, yes he slapped her which is wrong but does it make it right that she slapped him numerous times before he laid a hand on her? For all that knows his wife how do you know that she cant whip some of your butts. Now for his future in baseball (which is what were here to talk about) i see him going to the Rangers or Cubs, both teams neeed help with pitching and could be a good fit for him as a starter
