Rays Deal Iwamura To Pirates For Chavez

6:15pm: The deal is official, as per a press release by the Pirates. The deal is Chavez for Iwamura straight-up.

4:34pm: ESPN's Buster Olney tells us the Rays will receive reliever Jesse Chavez in return.  Chavez, 26, posted a 4.01 ERA in 67.3 innings this year as a rookie, with a 6.3 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9.  He throws hard - his average fastball was 94.5 mph.  Chavez is under team control through 2014.

Kovacevic believes the Pirates "will probably get another player in the Iwamura deal."  He notes that Iwamura would be the Pirates' highest-paid player.

3:35pm: Topkin says Iwamura is headed to the Pirates, and the deal will be announced tonight.  MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch does not believe the Bucs will surrender an established player.  I'm a bit surprised they're willing to take Iwamura on at that salary, not that he's bad value.

3:04pm: Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette tweets that he's hearing the Pirates are part of the Iwamura trade talks.  MLB.com's Joe Frisaro believes the Marlins would have interest, but not if they had to assume Iwamura's entire contract.

2:41pm: Roger Mooney of the Bradenton Herald believes Iwamura is headed to an NL club.

12:45pm: Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times hears that the Rays are on the verge of trading Akinori Iwamura. Topkin's source, who's not with the Rays, says the team close to acquiring Iwamura is not the Dodgers or Cubs.

The Rays have until one day after the end of the World Series to pick up Iwamura's $4.85MM option or buy him out for $550K. The Rays don't need Iwamura thanks to Ben Zobrist's emergence, but it's not surprising that other teams have interest in the Japanese infielder. The 30-year-old has a career line of .281/.354/.393 and he plays a solid second base, according to UZR/150.

I see this guy ending up playing for one of the teams in Chicago. He's a good fit for both of them.

Sounds like a good opportunity for Sean Rodriguez.

If a deal happens, I predict that the Ms are involved.
I'd speculate...David Aardsma maybe?

Twins made room on their 40 man, today. I'm hoping there's a connection there.

If this one doesn't get GM shot down here in a few hours and it's not the Cubs or Dodgers...

I'll call the Twins on this one. They need a 3B, a 2B, a #2 hitter, AND value defense while having bulpen depth to trade from. It just makes too much sense.

The roster connection to the Twins is a really good one, Zack; I hadn't thought of that.

Iwamura gives the Twins a reasonable OBP, some speed, and defensive flexibility out of the #2 hole. The Twins can acquire him now and then explore bargain FA/non-tender options for both 2B and 3B, and sign the best deal they get, moving Aki to the other spot.

That really does make some sense. I'm not wild about Iwamura; he's more or less average across the board, but average is a substantial step up from what we had this season.

Whoever gets him is getting a good player at a decent price. The Twins to make a ton of sense.

The Twins.

Some payback for the Garza/Bartlett give away.

I doubt that there will be much in return since the talk is that the Rays might cut him anyway to save payroll.

"I see this guy ending up playing for one of the teams in Chicago. He's a good fit for both of them."

Did'nt this article just read that the Cubs were NOT in the running?? I would agree that The Twins makes sense but at what price?

I agree, the Twins would be an excellent fit. I would say the Tigers should go for him (assuming Polanco is gone), but they'll be paying Bonderman, Robertson, and Willis to either not pitch for them or pitch horribly for them and will have about 13 cents to spend this offseason.

On an unrelated note, Ben and/or Tim, will there be a chat today?

this has the twins written all over it

Hopefully it's the Twins.

twins please? it would be a good start to the offseason knowing that bill smith is gonna be active. If we can get iwamura at 2B and sign a good 3b (hopefully beltre) Our infield would be set. With strong fielders at 3B and SS in punto we can handle the mediocre defense of iwamura.

I like the idea of sending him to the Angels for Arrendondo.

It has to be the twins. they dumped Buscher from the roster today.

It is WAY too much of a coincidence for Iwamura to be moved, and the Twins to clear 40 man space, when they wouldnt have to clear 40 man space for a bit yet to move up Valencia.

Iwamura best defensive spot is 2nd, and his obp is really good. Would give the Twinks a LEGIT #2 hitter. However if they grab him, you can almost rule out bringing O-Cab back, or going for Hardy.

Cuz after all. They have Punto at 4 mil, they HAVE to play him.... =/

Wasnt Iwamura a third baseman before Longoria? After Longoria came they asked him to move to second base.

I'd say either the Twins or Mariners.

How great would that consistant .350 OBP look in the dismal #2 spot for the Twins; with it stashed away at a premium defensive position under a reasonable one year contract to boot.

If it is the Twins, bravo Mr. Smith.

The Nats may have resigned themselves to having Desmond as a utility infielder and Guzman at SS for '10

He is a natural 2b who was moved to 3b because the Rays had a flux of 2b and Longoria wasnt around yet.

Here are jeff gray's stats, his 09 season was ridiculously good. He reminds me of a bit like grant balfour but better control

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/Players/G/Jeff-Gray-1.shtml

Bbxxj, don't applaud Smith until:

1. We're certain it's Minnesota.

2. We see what he gave up. Knowing Smith, he'd probably give up Aaron Hicks for one year of Iwamura or something.

I refuse to give Smith credit for any move until I know all angles of it.

I thought the Rauch acquisition was pretty good until they announced that the PTBNL was Kevin Mulvey. Rauch was more or less a salary dump and we gave them someone who actually has upside and ranked in our Top 10 prospects. =\

Would look good for the Twins and fill two needs with one player. Second base and the number 2 hole in the lineup, and early enough in the offseason to make more moves. Could it be for a potential Twins non-tender player like Crain to help the Rays bullpen?

Knowing Bill Smith its Dustin Matin or something for him.

Better question is if we do sign mauer to a long contract, do you deal Wilson Ramos? you could REALLY get alot back of him...

Wishful thinking only - he'd look great in a Royals uni as well - would enable them to move Callaspo to DH, non-tender Jacobs, keeping Butler at 1B, with Gordon/Teahen to back him up.

Dustin Martin, even =/

If it's Crain for Iwamura, I'll take Bill Smith out to a steak and lobster dinner at any steakhouse in the Twin Cities.

Don't even put such thoughts in my head, haha.

Yeah, I think that most signs point towards the Twins, they have the very obvious need and he fits their payroll.

He could man second or third base depending on whether someone like Valencia or Casilla emerges as an everyday piece there, and he would give the team a solid TOR hitter, something that they could use in front of Mauer, Morneau, Kubel and Cuddyer.

Yeah, certainly MorneauVP. It does depend on who is moved in the deal but you can't deny that this would fill a major offensive hole for the Twins while not forcing them to find just a 2B or just a 3B as they could get the best deal on either 2B, 3B, or SS in future dealings.

MorneauVP; Mulvey was awful in his brief ML stint and was knocked way below the other AAA starters in terms of pecking order (very expendable piece), and Rauch was NOT a salary dump. He was dominant for the Twins, (5-1, 1.72 ERA) and they have him for next year too.

It will be a player like Manship that gets moved, at worse it will be someone like Plouffe.

I'd like it if the Buccos got him. Doubtful though.

Only problem with Iwamura is how lefty-happy the top of our lineup becomes, but oh well. Mauer, Span, and Morneau all handle LHPs just fine anyway. Only Kubel really struggles with them, and he actually showed a lot of improvement in his first year of not being platooned.

Span
Iwamura
Mauer
Morneau
Cuddyer
Kubel
Valencia/Glaus(?)
Young
Punto

Wishful thinking on Glaus, but another low-risk, high-reward Crede style signing would be nice. Save budget and potentially make a big impact. If it doesn't work, give Valencia his shot.

Yeah it would be:
Cf Span
2b Iwamura
C Mauer
Rf Cuddyer
1b Mornaeu
Lf Young
Dh Kubel

The only problem i see.
Iwamura, Kubel, Mornaeu, Mauer, Span... ALL lefties.

Lol MorneauVP. Same thoughts, and yes ive been butchering morneaus name, just woke up lol.

I only said the order i did because Gardy is know for trying to go L, R, L, R...

I could see the Astros trading for him, since the Rays need a catcher..Towles is a mixed bag though..not sure what you will get. Iwamura could conceivably play 3rd for the stros unless the rumors are true of the astros selling the rights of Matsui to Japan since supposedly he wants to go back.

Rauch may have excelled for the Twins, but the D'Backs moved him looking to save some money because they didn't want to pay him $2.9MM in 2010.

Mulvey got knocked around, sure, but so do most young starters in their first stint. Baker, Blackburn, Slowey... all shelled initially.

Mulvey still has upside and was too much to give up based on the D'Backs motives for moving Rauch.

Capps for Iwamura! It makes perfect sense! ......not really......

If the twins rumor is true then we can guess that the deal is for someone off the twins 40man

It wouldnt have to be for someone off the Twins 40 man, they have 1 spot open, plus those opened by FA O-Cab, Crede and Mahay. Remember Buscher was just cut from 40 man today.

"Did'nt this article just read that the Cubs were NOT in the running?? I would agree that The Twins makes sense but at what price?"

Actually, when I posted it did not say that. But thanks for inquiring.

To the pirates..

Every team that deals veterans is looking to get salary off their books, but 2.9 is very affordable for a good MR. Honestly, I'm surprised AZ didn't get more for him. Given the length and affordibility of his contract.

Mulvey's upside is very limited and is overvalued because he was part of the Santana trade. I think he's 25 years old and he's at best a fifth starter

Mulvey is 24. And if im right he was claimed off of Waivers when the Twins sent him down to make room for Rauch and that why the Twins just made it Rauch and cash for Mulvey.

On September 1, 2009, Kevin Mulvey was claimed off waivers to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Arizona Diamondbacks sent cash considerations to the Twins. This claim was made shortly after a trade that sent pitcher Jon Rauch to the Twins for a player to be named later, which later became cash considerations. According to MLB.com "essentially that (the player to be named later) is Mulvey."

$2.9MM for a solid middle reliever was a reasonable price to pay a few seasons ago. Teams are skimping far more on their bullpens.

Plus, Rauch posted a 4.05 FIP and a 4.72 xFIP for Arizona, and despite a strong 1.72 ERA for Minnesota, his FIP was 3.38 and his xFIP was 4.34.

He wasn't as good as he appeared for the Twins. The majority of baseball writers I've seen (MLBTR included) were puzzled that the Twins gave up Mulvey. Our bullpen is pricey enough as is thanks to Nathan. Adding another $3MM for Rauch brings the total for our bullpen up to almost $20MM... that'll be 20%-25% of the team's payroll.

Giving up anything other than a low-level warm body for Rauch was unnecessary.

Plenty of teams have cleared spots on their 40 man roster over the past couple weeks. It means nothing.

The Mets outrighted 4 players to Buffalo last month, and releasd another. They must be planning on adding 5 new guys by this logic!

Buscher was sent down because he sucks, it's that simple.

too many lefties!?

maybe they should teach mauer and morneau to switch hit !!

The Mariners make sense, as a Mariners fan. Jose Lopez isn't going to be a legitimate thread once pitchers stop throwing him inside fastballs on 2-0 counts.

Get Iwamura, and flip Lopez to a team that thinks his power/RBIs are legit.

"He is a natural 2b who was moved to 3b because the Rays had a flux of 2b and Longoria wasnt around yet."

Actually Im pretty sure he was a power hitting 3B in Japan before he came to the states (smaller ball parks)

"The only problem i see.
Iwamura, Kubel, Mornaeu, Mauer, Span... ALL lefties.

Posted by: patsfanatic83 | November 03, 2009 at 01:33 PM"

I would not worry too much about that. If this team does get Iwamura, watch out..

Kubel isnt very good against his fellow Southpaws(Andre Ethier and him should get together and figure it out), Span hits them very well, Mauer is.. well Mauer, and Morneau is decent against them.

Iwamura has hit lefties very well in the time hes been in the US.

Cuddyer is a beast against Lefties.. So if this trade does happen, they will have to think long and hard about trading one of Young and Cuddyer.

Too many lefties? Check Iwamura's career splits. He hits lefties better than righties and has an OBP north of .370 vs LHP. I don't see it being a problem.

Lol. Guys calm down. Im speaking how Gardy would act. This guy love the lefty then righty lineup. He might throw a fit to know he doesnt have that option with 5 everday lefties in the lineup. Being that we face is righties more then lefties and these lefties hit both well, it would bother me not. But Gardy is stubborn.
Ask any Twins fan lol.

maybe the white sox? they are very shallow at 2nd, with getz and nix and lillibridge? he'd be a good fit there I believe

The sox seem to be chaining their 2b spot to getz, which isnt so bad, he did decent in 09.

White sox have Getz 2B and Beckham 3B. Plus they are both on the very cheap, so I don't see my White Sox making the move evn though I would love to see Iwamura lead off for the sox in 2010. But this rumor being so early in the offseason just completely wreeks of Kenny Williams.

"He is a natural 2b who was moved to 3b because the Rays had a flux of 2b and Longoria wasnt around yet."

yeah you got that backwards, he was third base but had to move to second to make room for longo

The M's just cleared 5 roster spots recently. While both the Twins and Mariners make sense I say it is to the M's for a Mark Lowe/Sean White type. The Rays only hole is the Pen.

its going to be the Braves. i can feel it.

If it was a week from now I could see it being the Phillies, but obviously it isn't, so I have no clue.

Morneau MVP- Kevin Mulvey was not a big loss at all and Jon Rauch has turned out to be a very good reliever who also projects to have Type A status as a free agent after the 2010 season. The Twins have 2-3 pitchers that are ready to fill in for Mulvey's spot in Triple A including Swarzak, and Gabino. Mulvey had an 8.14 era in the majors last year in 24 innings and allowed more hits than innings pitched in Triple A. He would not have been on the Twins top 10-20 prospect list.

Dejan Kovacevic hears that the Pirates may be the team in on Iwamura

http://twitter.com/Dejan_Kovacevic/status/5401514388

If it's an NL team then I might guess Cubs. If they are working on a Grabow deal right now, they might be looking to making a trade like this so early. Also, Maybe Padres.. Just a thought.

Hmm... Not a big time impact player, but I'd be psyched to see the Pirates make a move like this. Instantly solidifies the 2B spot.

I'm guessing Capps or Doumit for Aki, these two teams match up well.

Towles for Iwamura? Don't think that is on the Rays agenda.

"If a deal happens, I predict that the Ms are involved.
I'd speculate...David Aardsma maybe?"
No way we're giving up our best bullpen arm. I could see a reliever, but with lopez, who we may or may not trade, we really don't need him. If we trade lopez, that's a whole different story. But until then, doubtful it's us.

The Nats are looking for a veteran MI, I think Iwamura would be a nice fit. Don't know who we would be willing to trade, unfortunately. Don't think the Rays want any part of Christian Guzman...

Nick Blackburn posted a 7.71 ERA in his 2007 debut and entered the following season as the Twins' #1 prospect.

Rauch put up an ERA that does not match his peripherals at all and will cost $3MM next season.

If a team's looking to shed salary, you don't give up a 24-year-old with upside.

Regardless of Rauch's numbers, giving up anyone with upside was a pointless risk by Smith that was widely questioned by many people other than myself, and rightfully so.

Rauch projects as one of the lowest Type A free agents right now, but his score will completely change a year from now, as his ranking will be based on a combination of his 2010 and 2009 seasons. To say he projects as a Type A for 2010 isn't really accurate, since we're missing half the data.

The phrase "you can never have too much pitching" may be a cliche, but it's also true. Smith unnecessarily parted with an upside arm when he likely could have landed Rauch for far less due to the money he was owed.

Maybe the cardinals if he moves back to 3rd base.

Iwamura to the Pirates makes no sense and goes against everything Huntington has done so far, unless he's 100% confident that he can flip Iwamura at the deadline for something of value, which I wouldn't bank on.

Pirates rumors have to be bogus.

Why would the Pirates want him?

I am saying possibly if it is only the bucs and rays that there has to be an exchange of catchers going on here too. navarro and iwamura for doumit would make some sense for both teams. The bucs are looking to get a solid 2b or 3b to shore up that infield for the next year or 2 until alvarez is poised to make his debut at either 1st or 3rd. This is a good move if the pirates make it and if this guy speaks english, because lord knows the bucs need veteran leadership bad.

Who called it? Yes!

Iwamura to the Pirates makes perfect sense. They need someone to shore up the second base spot for at least 2 years. It also gives them someone to bat in the 2 hole in front of Jones. This complicates the Andy LaRoche situation, though.

I think most teams need average offensive/defensive 2B/3B on a reasonable one year contract. At least half the teams in the league should be calling the Rays.

but I hope that it is the Twins.

The Pirates need him why???

Delwyn Young should get regular ABs next year.

Pirates may trade a catcher to them.. Robinson Diaz maybe.. keep in mind that the Rays were most likely going to decline his option so they may not be getting much.

I wonder if Capps could be the reliever mentioned? I'm not sure his value is on par with Iwamura's though.

AZ is a great fit. Can't wait for the news to come down.

Hurray for Hotstove season!

Delwyn Young has missed his window, even on a team like the Pirates. He had 350+ at-bats this year and managed all of .266/.326/.381 while playing below average defense. In fact, when he was getting every-day at-bats (post Sanchez trade), he was even worse, dropping to a .649 OPS after the break. I'm glad he got his chance, but he doesn't deserve another one.

"Iwamura to the Pirates makes perfect sense. They need someone to shore up the second base spot for at least 2 years. It also gives them someone to bat in the 2 hole in front of Jones."

Iwamura is only signed through 2010, and it's for nearly $5MM. Why should the Pirates pay that kind of money for anyone when they're not going to contend in 2010 anyway? (No offense)

Give regular ABs to Delwyn Young, and Dodgerblue said.

Adding pricey veterans (even if $4.85MM isn't outrageous) to a rebuilding club rarely makes sense, unless it's in a $1MM bench role to provide leadership or spell the young guys who should be getting the playing time.

This isn't the case with Iwamura. Huntington has been a pretty smart GM in his short tenure; I can't see him making this kind of blunder.

The Pirates should not be giving up any assets for a player entering his 30's, on essentially a 1 year rental when they stand no chance at being competitive in 2010.

It's a short-sighted move aiming for respectability, rather then actually building a contender a couple years down the line.

Delwyn Young hasn't really secured a starting spot on the Pirates. Though it looked like he was going into about August, he plummeted into a cold streak of something like 6 for 78. Just my opinion, but I think that this could be a good trade for the Pirates.

RMB915, I was thinking the same thing. Schumaker looks like he might fight in the FO's plans for 2nd, but we could use a 3rd basemen. Idk if freese will get a legit shot as they say this Spring Training.

The Twins evidently thought that Mulvey was not going to develop as they hoped and moved him for a player they felt would help get the into the post-season. Throughout much of the summer, we Twins fans were continually noting that the Twins needed more depth in the bullpen.

Rauch played a significant role in winning the Central Division and getting into the post-season. Five years from now, we may find that Tyler Ladendorf (to the A's for Cabrera), Johan Pino (to Indians for Pavano), and Mulvey are productive major league ball players, but, the veteran players we got back were crucial to our success in '09. Of course, it is just as likely that Mulvey, Ladendorf, and Pino are forgotten names.

Moving prospects for veteran help around the trading deadline is what contending teams often do. We don't have a clue what the D'Backs wanted for Rauch but we do know that they accepted Mulvey - a guy the Twins thought was clearly a decent price to pay for Rauch. Right now, that is a very reasonable trade; five years from now maybe it looks bad, maybe it looks awfully good!

Who cares if Iwamura won't be on the Pirates beyond 2010. Adding assets at good value is never a bad thing, ever.

Delwyn Young's defense is sloppy and he tailed off big time in the second half last year. I think he's best as a utility guy and he's a great pinch hitter, as a starter I'm not sure.

The Pirates need to start bringing in some players with track records, NH himself even said guys won't just be handed starting jobs anymore. Guys like Moss, LaRoche, and other young players who are not playing well shouldn't be handed jobs for 5 years to continue the losing trend.

doumit and capps for iwamura and SP prospects...that's my guess

Here's a minor twist... Not only did the Twins simply send Buscher to AAA, but in doing so they made him a minor league free agent.

This pretty drastically affects most of the "platoon 3B" scenarios that was being tossed around. It probably means we're either going all-in with Valencia or going to re-sign Crede with another incentive laden deal. Then again, maybe we're going outside of the organization for someone.

I'm still pulling for Iwamura though. I think he'd be a great fit for the Twins.

I can't remember who said it, but i remember reading a comment that said sending him to the Angels...... that makes no sense since Kendrick and Izturis are both going to be playing second. I don't know who wants Iwamura in the NL that makes a lot of sense

"Who cares if Iwamura won't be on the Pirates beyond 2010. Adding assets at good value is never a bad thing, ever.

The point is that even any marginal prospect they might give up could be someone that could help them down the line, when they might actually stand a chance at being competitive. You don't blow your assets for 2010 when you don't have a chance at competing for 2010 anyways.

Just from debunked rumors: What about Manny Ramirez to Tampa in a package including Akinori Iwamura? AL East not a "a very mediocre division" and Dodgers are ruled out for Aki....does backwards logic brainstorming actually work in predicting baseball?

Pirates i assume he plays 2b.

Then laroche stays at 3b until alvarez is ready

Neil walker is out of milb options, another 3b/infield option

I'd love to see A's pry away laroche forsome pitching

In the guess I posted, they wouldn't be giving up any prospect. And they'd be getting much needed SP prospect(s) in return while also shedding around 3 mill more from their 2010 roster. And they can still move Iwamura midseason if need be.

Micheal Cuddyear can be the 3B or even Matt Tolbert and you also have Harris on the Roster to.

How about him to the Marlins for Jai Miller,Tankersley and so on?

To the Cardinals to play 2B for Motte,Hill the Catcher and so on?

Nice to see the Pirates acquire a good player, not some retread who couldn't cut it on his other team.

Wondering what they gave up, hopefully it's not something too big for a guy under contract for a year. Maybe Neil Walker, please.

This doesnt make sense. Aki has 1/~5m left on his contract. There is about a 2% chance they compete(everyone has some kinda chance). Unless its a PR move and then trade him again at the deadline, it seems like a 5M waste. And as some have pointed out, they have other options. LaRoche will be at 3B until Alvarez is ready. Then he should go to 2B, Young, who STILL hasnt been given a full year to play. Then, the Pirates also have another prospect who is out of options(walker)...

However, this seems to speed up the potential Uggla/ LAD trade...

As a pirates fan, i like the move. We dont have an established 2b. Delwyn Young is not one, hes a utility player/pinch hitter.

I'm with you bigpat. I'm sick of Neil Walker, please get him off the team.

"As a pirates fan, i like the move. We dont have an established 2b. Delwyn Young is not one, hes a utility player/pinch hitter"

I actually like this move for the Pirates as well, depending on what the Rays get in return.

My guess is that Iwamura and LaRoche cover the 2B/3B spots until Alvarez is ready, at which point LaRoche will become the everyday second baseman and Iwamura will be put on the trade market.

Certainly an interesting use of money for the Pirates given that they dealt Wilson and Sanchez earlier this year, although they landed Alderson, Clement and others in the deals, so the moves were certainly solid in their own right.
