The White Sox have a new third baseman of the future, writes Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune. Dayan Viciedo held his own as a 20-year-old in AA this year (.708 OPS), but Brent Morel has passed him on Rogers' depth chart with a torrid stint in the Arizona Fall League. Here are the rest of Rogers' rumors:

If the Twins sign Cabrera, Smith is officially an idiot.

"Casey McGehee has emerged as a solid player, but the Brewers are reluctant to trade Mat Gamel, even if it would net them the starting pitching they covet."
Smart move. McGehee is not going to produce like that again. Iowa is a friendly hitting location and he was never able to get near his 2009 line against AAA pitchers.

Twins PLEASE trade for Brandon Philips that would be a sweet lineup and infield defense!

Would love to see the Braves trade Vazquez for Gamel and another prospect or two.

Morel performed ok (788 ops) this season but did so as a 22 year old in high-a. Not old but not ahead of the curve age wise and he should have experienced success. Regarding the AFL a lot of people have put up ridiculous numbers there over the years...always far more hitting talent then pitching as teams want to rest the arms of their key guys. A few rehabbing guys and late signs like Strasburg make some appearances but far better hitting prospects throughout. As a Red Sox fan I'm no expert on the W.Sox system but it doesn't seem to me that Viciedo's performance as a 20 year old in double-a is any less impressive.

Would be okay with the Twins bringing in Cabrera for 2b. But only if they got a number 2 hitter at 3rd. They need a number 2 hitter more then they need a specific 2b or 3b.

"Twins PLEASE trade for Brandon Philips that would be a sweet lineup and infield defense!"
Curiosity. When is the last time the Twins sent prospects for an established star? Midre Cummings and Denny Neagle for John Smiley waaaaay back in 1992?
There are probably posters on this board that werent even alive at the time of that trade. And that very well could be the last multi-prospect for established star move they have made. I cant think of another (the Garza trade was an unestablished for unestablished trade)

The Brewers would never do that. Vasquez is overated by all Braves Fan. They know nothing.

I don't understand all of this hate on Punto.
With just average BABIP luck he should post a .350 OBP with 20+SB speed over a full season. That works just fine in the two spot. That doesn't even touch on his elite ~20.0 UZR/150 play at third base and the fact that he costs 0M to add.
Cabrera played well and was a good leader on that team. He could be a plus glove at second and his contact abiity would play well in the 8-9 spot in the order.

@Brewers
We don't overrate Vasquez
Vazquez however just had a 2.87ERA and 238K/44BB season in 219.1 IP. Even if he regresses a little you would still get a 3.00 ERA 200K and 200 IP. I don't want to trade him even for Gamel.

i like the twins lineup if they sign cabrera, especially if delmon young ever lives up to his potential, and hes probably good enough for the 2 spot. if either or both of these things happen youll be sure to see them in october again.

I like the Twins defense up the middle if they sign Cabrera to play 2nd. I think they should also consider signing Mora. Established vet who can handle the bat and plays a solid 3b. Probably wouldn't cost too much either.

@Yanks09
Mora is not an upgrade over Punto. He has
more power sure but Punto kills him in defense, speed and even OBP. Starting Punto also costs nothing.
Posted by: bbxxj | November 15, 2009 at 07:01 PM
Mora is definitely an upgrade over Punto. Granted Punto has a great glove he still can not hit a lick, runs well but is by no means a speed burner (he has never stolen more than 20 bases in a season) and not sure how you figure his OBP is higher than Moras since he has a career OBP of .322 compared to Moras .352.
Punto is a great utility man but should not be a starter or that teams got some issues.

I really wanted the Phillies to make a run at Gamel. I know he would cost a lot in prospects or even Happ.
But, he's a solid player and the Brewers are smart to keep him.
Posted by: ChasenWerth | November 15, 2009 at 07:13 PM
Just FYI, I would def. give up Happ + prospects for Gamel, and it still prob. wouldn't be enough.
The guy could easily be a 30 HR 80-100 RBI in the next couple years.
Posted by: ChasenWerth | November 15, 2009 at 07:15 PM
@Yanks09
The problem with using career stats for Mora is the fact that he is an aging player with declining stats and defense that's only going to get worse.
Punto put up a .337 OBP last year with a BABIP 20 points lower than his career average. So if he gets average luck he should get at .357 OBP and 20+SB speed. I still don't understand why you would replace that with an aging and past his prime Mora.
Posted by: bbxxj | November 15, 2009 at 07:26 PM
Since Viciedo is so heavy he was detined to be limited to 1b and DH anyway so Morel's emergence as the favorite is no surprise to me.
Posted by: Tough | November 15, 2009 at 08:12 PM
bbxxj....I would only think the Twins would want Mora on a one year deal. He is definitely not the answer for the future, but would just be a stopgap until they find another option at 3rd. I doubt Mora would be very expensive since the Twinkies are probably the only competitive team that would be able to offer him a starting job. Worst thing that could happen is Mora doesn't perform and they give Punto more playing time. Best thing that can happen is Mora looks like he did in 2008. There really isn't that much risk involved.
Posted by: yanks09 | November 15, 2009 at 08:23 PM
as a brewers fan i'd be all for getting happ for gamel....we desperately need pitching, but does philly really need another left handed bat in their lineup, it would make them even more lh-heavy
Posted by: jakelannert | November 15, 2009 at 10:22 PM
McGehee might be a flash in the pan, but in regards to the 3B position, he's light years ahead of Gamel defensively.
Going with McGehee next year at 3B is still the smartest move. Gamel's a future corner outfielder, and he'd likely be as costly as Ryan Braun circa 2007 with the glove.
If the Brewers can net a good arm for Gamel or a package with him, I think they should make the deal. But Gamel's bat is that much more important for the organization with the departure of Cameron.
I suspect Doug Melvin's just too high on Gamel, and he'll look to use him (and his cheap contract) to replace Hart in the OF or perhaps even Fielder at 1B by 2011 or 2012.
Posted by: BrewCity | November 16, 2009 at 04:36 AM
Nick Punto signed a 2 year $4.5 million contract in 08...that's a little more than nothing.
Posted by: FightinFish8 | November 16, 2009 at 05:24 PM
Correction: $8.5 million
Posted by: FightinFish8 | November 16, 2009 at 05:30 PM
The Phillies could use him in 2011 when Taylor plays full time over Ibanez (if that happens)...I just like Gamel, he's a solid young player.
Posted by: ChasenWerth | November 16, 2009 at 10:26 PM
I would think that Viciedo is probably gonna be the eventual successor to Paulie at 1B. But does anybody think that maybe he has a shot at the DH spot this year. What is the status on that 3B we got for Javier? Jon Gilmore. I dont think Viciedo will be at third.
