The Tigers already removed Marcus Thames and Matt Treanor from the roster today, making both players free agents, and now Lynn Henning of The Detroit News has some more hot stove talk for us...
- GM Dave Dombrowski replied "Nothing hot and heavy" when asked if there was any trade dialogue ongoing.
- The Tigers would "likely bite on an affordable two-year deal" for Fernando Rodney, but would probably not want to gamble on anything longer.
- Brandon Lyon's agent, Barry Meister, emphasized that his client wants to know what his job description in 2010 will be ahead of time. The Tigers may not be willing to commit to him as closer, and Lyon knows that's where the money is.
- Placido Polanco "has all but been consigned to free agency."
- Henning thinks the "best bet" is that Adam Everett and the team agree to a "mutually pleasing" contract.
- Detroit will make no effort to sign either Jarrod Washburn or Aubrey Huff. Washburn has already said that he isn't expecting to get an offer from his post-trade deadline employer.
- The Tigers have already traded away their most expendable minor league arms, so they aren't blessed with much trade ammo.
- John Lowe of The Detroit Free Press says the Tigers weren't involved in trade talks for J.J. Hardy. Brewers' GM Doug Melvin said he was looking for a centerfielder or cost efficient pitching, and he "did not see a match."
- MLB.com's Jason Beck notes that the Tigers were deep in talks with the Mariners for Michigan native J.J. Putz last offseason, but they can now take him on as a "low-risk, high-reward signing" if they so choose.
Braves could give Lyon the closer role if neither Soriano and Gonzo don't accept arb. Even if Gonzo accepts we could slot him with Moylan setting up Lyon.
If only Thames could play defense...

Anyone that is wondering about Thames. He is a below average defender and a very inconsistent hitter.

Thames is a very consistent hitter...he consistently tries to pull every thing he sees and consistently swings at breaking pitches out of the zone.

Keep everett now that Hardy is gone you got noone There are no shortstops in the market but.... I say go for Tejada, boy that would be a great pickup and would definetly put you guys in a playoff situation with a couple of pitchers { SP and RP} you could see your self there i say keep EVerett no matter what because he is a good liability so KEEP him, As For Thames boy i have no clue why the Tigers did not keep him. Thames is going to get signed maybe overpriced but he could go to a team that needs power... i am thinking marlins? DIdn't they just lose their RF and this would be a great fit... New environment,,,, new place... Hopefully he likes the rain

The tigers let Thames go because they have way too many outfielders and too many guys that could play DH ahead of him. Letting him go makes perfect sense.
The Tigers definately need to push to get JJ Putz since they already ost out the other JJ in Hardy. Tigers need to offer Putz a two year deal or a 1 year with an 2nd year option to get him.
I also think that the Tigers need Polanco more than Everett because he has the better bat. The Tigers do have Santiago remember who is younger and has slightly more range than Adam.
Pitching.... I don't see an exciting free agent starter coming over so Lets hope that one of the High priced SP that are already on payroll come through.
Tigers also need to make sure that they get Laird back...I don't care about his bat, this was his first year as a full time catcher... Plus with Avila as backup = good catching group.
I am also tired of all of the Inge haters out there as well. The guy was playing on TWO bad knees the entire season and had a tremendous year...without him Tigers don't even have a play in game! SO Inge is a good solid player so everyone needs to calm down about his lack of performance in the 2nd half. He will rebound this season.

no match for J.J. Hardy>>> galaraga would have made sense.. figures twins would get the guy we needed.. if they had det.'s payroll they'd win the division by 20 games every year.. maybe we sign O. Cabrera ??? please dumbroski.. don't waste a ton of money of rodney and lyon.. relivers are biggest waste of resources and we have too many needs 2 waste money
@ least they let thames walk.. course they were 12 months late on that one.. could have saved 2.5 million this year.. and used that roster spot for sheffield

I would like to see J.J. Putz in a Tigers uni. A Lyon (if we can resign him), Putz, Zumaya, Seay and Ni bullpen would be nasty. Actually, cross off Zumaya.. you know he'll be on the DL.
