I do not see why the Nationals would be buyers. How do they expect to leap frog the Braves, Phillies, and Mets.

Its not about competing, its about putting butts in the seats and trading for guys under team control past 2010, who would never in a million years sign in DC under their own accord

Yes, Mike Lowell is so miserable that instead of waiting it out 3 months he’ll give the team making him that way back $5 million.
It amazes me how some writers feel the need to write articles that literally make no sense.
Andrew B
Was just about to write the same exact thing…….why in gods name would he retire?
John W
Why would Lowell retire? He gets $5M just for watching baseball games from one of the best seats at every game. If it was me, I would be looking at extending that deal.

Did you actually read the article? The ‘retirement’ reference is at the end of the article in one sentence surrounded by an acknowledged speculative tone.
CaptainCharisma
I didn’t read the article, because the way it was advertised on here, it seemed like the idea of him retiring would compose the entire article, and I figured it wouldn’t even be worth reading. Since then, I took at a look at it, but regardless, he’s not going to retire and leave $5 million on the table, so it’s still pointless tossing the idea out there in the first place.

What would Kelly Johnson cost?
Brandon G
Why would the Phillies want another left handed bat? Al tough, he should have a field day in that band box…

if Lilly is now a type A then the cubs should trade him..by all means…Get a Major League ready Type B prospect and like a type C and be done with it..The team trading for him will get that back when he doesnt accept arbitration. Time to cash in now Cubbies, get one piece that will be ready for next year while you can…

Mike lowell’s momma didn’t raise any fools! Besides he knows that, at age 36, with a growing history of serious injury, his days in MLB as a player are numbered. I would hope that he chooses to stay in baseball, perhaps, eventually, to manage. He is bright, multi-lingual and recognized as a quality player of long standing. If the Red Sox could find a way to keep him in their organization after 2010 they would not be hurting themselves operationally.
