Too bad the White Sox had Caruso skip Double-A and Triple-A to justify the trade from a PR perspective. He could have actually been a good player, and the trade could have been outstanding for them.
Patrick Newman
Yeah, they definitely rushed him to justify the trade. He never had a good enough arm for shortstop at the mlb level though.
Lorenzo Barcelo was actually good down the stretch for the White Sox in 2000 as well. Since leaving mlb affiliated ball, he’s played in Taiwan and (I think) Europe, and is active in the Mexican League this year. He’s still only 32.

Wow.. The A’s really got ripped off on that deal. I notice Billy Beane wasn’t directly responsible for that one as he didn’t become GM until October.

1997 is without question one of my favorite years as a baseball fan, completely underrated season, especially as a die hard Mets fan (that was the first year in about 7, that they finished over .500 with 88 wins). They actually made a big trade with the Cubs in which they dealt Lance Johnson, Mark Clark, and Manny Alexander for Turk Wendell, Mel Rojas, and Brian McRae with of course Wendell being the steal of the whole deal in the end. Of course that was a post-July 31 deal.
I would love to see someone write up a review of the 1997 season.

That Cubs trade was a huge thing for me as a 15-year-old.

It’s funny, looking back on that trade I had no idea how well Mark Clark pitched for the Cubbies down the stretch. He was 6-1 with an ERA under 3. Talk about a terrific pickup. Of course he sucked for the remainder of his career after that, but at the time he was terrific.

Tim, do you remember those ’97 Mets? 88 wins that came out of nowhere. A complete motley crew. Many people forget that Rick Reed pitched over 200 innings and had an ERA under 3! They never really had a chance competing against power houses in the East like the Marlins and Braves but they at least made it fun. As a matter of fact when the Mets earlier this year were playing competitive ball and were just “fun” to watch, they reminded me a lot of the ’97 Mets with obviously more talent.
