Matt Bush actually had an outstanding season for the Stone Crabs. I expect him to be in the Rays bullpen next season. I can guarantee it.

Not sure 8.1 innings in advanced A ball will get you onto a major league roster.

I thought Justin Verlander was the consensus top talent in the 2004 draft, and the Padres passed him up in favor of the hometown boy Bush.
Dave_Gershman
Keep in mind that they also passed on Dustin Pedroia and Yovani Gallardo as well…
Ouch!!!!

A lot of teams passed on Pedroia, he was a second round pick. The hilarious part is because so many scouts concurred Pedroia would never make it in the majors he worked that much harder to prove them wrong.

No, Verlander was actually considered a bit of an overdraft. He lacked command back then. Great arm, not sure where it was going all the time.

I really really hate to ask you this because comparisons aren’t usually accurate, but would you consider the Deck McGuire situation (and Deck McGuire himself) to Justin Verlander? Smilar size and arm…Similar stuff but Verlander throws harder, but both had doubts coming in to the draft, in McGuire’s case, he slipped down a few spots while Verlander moved up…
Mike Axisa
Yes and no. McGuire’s stuff isn’t as good as Verlander’s, which is holy crap good, but it’s same idea. Good arm, shaky command.

Man, the Pads have not had success with high-money picks. This makes me happy.
Jose
and the point of your comment is?
Hurricane
Maybe to express his pleasure in the Padres failure with high-money picks.

Bush’s Baseball-Reference says that his middle name starts with a B, but I swore it started with an F.

Matt Bush has sucked; but for what its worth he put up AWESOME numbers with the pads as a pitcher before having surgery. Granted he later was let go because of two off the field fights while drinking but my point is if the Rays can get his head together he has the stuff to out pitch the guys in their pen. He’s a bust but he’s still young enough to become a productive mlber eventually. His arm is def good enough imo.
