I hope they’re working out a longer term deal with Billy, hopefully buying out at least one year of his free agency. People sometimes forget the kid is only 24 and hit a combined .310/.375/.481 the past two seasons.

Well, he’ll be 25 two weeks after Opening Day, but still, he’s got plenty of room to grow and I don’t think he’s close to hitting his ceiling.

I think a long term deal (3-5 years) with Butler is coming soon but perhaps not until after we see how the Kila monster plays this year.

espnchicago.com is reporting the Nationals have acquired Tom Gorzellany

I think the Jays streak is coming to an end!

I don’t get the attraction of BJ Upton. The guy batted 237 last year and 241 the year before. He had one good year in 2007. The arbitration process sure does give players healthy salaries.

The Phillies need to avoid arbitration with Kyle Kendrick before he becomes the most overpaid, Super Two – long reliever ever. Ugh, this guy…

when i try to use arb-tracker, and set the filter for a specific team, it switches to 2012. Any reason for that?

the world is ending.

Great to see Armando sign with the Tigers. There was some speculation that they’d cut him loose if he didn’t make the rotation. $ 2.3 mil is a bit much for a long reliever, but the Tigers need the depth in the rotation with Penny’s health history, and Coke’s uncertainty transitioning to the bullpen, not to mention a lack of depth in the system for starting pitchers.

I agree. You can never have too much pitching and if Armando is our 6th man waiting in the wings it takes pressure off knowing you can account for an injury. It also gives them an out if Coke needs to go back to the bullpen and at worst it gives the Tigers an excellent option for spot starts and long relief. Keeping him was a great idea.

So, can someone explain some things to me? If the team does not sign the player, what happens?
Lunchbox45
you mean if the team walks away from the arbitration settlement?
myname_989
Yeah, there is no “not signing” a player now. If a player was offered arbitration, they have a few options. They can either agree to a conctract before the deadline, which is the equivalent of “avoiding arbitration.” The other option is for both sides (player and team) to submit what they believe is fair value for 2011, and an arbitrator will review several factors and determine the player’s salary, somewhere between both offered figures. So, for example, if the Phillies’ salary figure for Kendrick’s arbitration hearing is 900k, and Kendrick’s agent suggests he’s worth about $2 million, the arbitrator will review Kendrick’s track record, last year’s performance, etc., and probably settle for around $1.5 million.
Those aren’t actual numbers, but that’s how the process works. Either way, any player who’s been offered arbitration will be on said team in 2011, unless they are traded.

Ok, completely get it now. Thank you!

Gally got too much!! I mean, no offense to the guy, but he seriously wasn’t even worth $2MM. I was expecting something in the $1.5MM range, the deal is equivalent to what Jeremy Bonderman got in his first arbitration deal, but I still don’t understand…

No such thing as too much pitching. He did get a bit too much IMO but having him makes too much sense to whine about an extra million. An injury or making coke go back to the bullpen immediately males his contract worth it’s weight in gold and at worst he becomes a spot starter/long relief man and if that all he does I won’t be upset with his salary. An overpay, agreed, but I believe it was a very wise decision.

Sorry about the perfect game, heres an extra million =/
