Why wasn’t Belt taken on the rule 5 draft? Was he eligible to be taken? My understanding is that if you aren’t on the 40 man you’re fair game.

The Rule 5 draft was a non consideration since he was only drafted in ’09. He would have had to been drafted two years prior and not be on the 40-man to have been eligible.

He’s protected from the draft for two or three years I believe…

If you are not put on the 40 man after five years within an organization than you are subject to the Rule 5.

Belt has been on my fantasy baseball radar so I hope he does get a chance sooner rather than later. Depends on how creaky old Burrell starts the season.
