Even with a hometown discount he probably wouldn’t sign for more than 4 years/$60MM or 8 years/$168MM depending on what he wants from his career money-wise. The 4 year deal would be a club friendly contract that could keep him around long enough for the Dodgers to rebuild and contend with him as their franchise player, while the 8 year deal is comparable to top tier free agency as is.

I really think it would be a mistake for Kemp to accept a “hometown discount.” The Dodgers have, obviously, some serious financial issues. If he’s happy, he should stay there but I’m not sure that franchise and that front office isn’t one that I would give a discount for.

I think it’s a mistake to assume Kemp might even take a discount, hometown or otherwise. With Kemp’s year, if he can duplicate it then he’s going into next offseason as the top FA hitter.

I think of a typical hometown discount as leaving 10-20% of total salary on the table, whether that be less years or lower amount per year. Considering the deals signed the last few year 8yrs/168MM is about market value (maybe 5-6 mil less considering they are buying out his last arb year). So a 4yrs/60MM would be leaving 65% on the table. The players union would freak out.

Kemp is from Oklahoma…

21 years ago was 1988? What year are we in? Where are we? What’s going on?

MLBTR, I agree with Daniel Powell, I think your math is just a LITTLE bit off
