It was a 40-man roster move. (Giants had to make room to activate Surkamp for his start, I think) They thought they could sneak Tanner through waivers. But, nope.

He did make it through waivers and was subsequently released. Tanner was a free agent. He apparently decided to sign somewhere else, even though he was expected to re-sign with the Giants.
Surkamp would have needed to have been placed on the 40-man after the season, anyway, or he would have been exposed to the Rule 5 draft. I think they could have shifted Zito to the 60-day DL for a temporary solution, but the Giants FO want to make sure that Zito is available this month in case of emergency. Heck, they could have placed Jonathan Sanchez on the 60-day. They say that his sprained ankle is progressing worse than Posey’s broken one and that he won’t pitch anymore this season.
All-in-all, it’s not a horrible move, because Tanner is minor league fodder. If he were pitching with the Giants, a lot of injuries have happened to the pitching staff and the season is toast. It’s deck chairs at that point.

Thanks for the clarification. Thought he got claimed. Nonetheless, no matter what, I definitely don’t want to see any more of Zito this year (ever?). Sanchez, maybe, maybe. Tanner’s stock has dropped this year, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him hit the bigs someday. Definitely won’t ever be much of an impact player.
Not to get overly excited over a single win against the D-Backs worst starter, but I’d still give the Giants a 10% chance this year of making the play-offs. They don’t need help yet.
And AZ has been crazy streaky lately. Win streak, Loss streak, win streak. It’s not outside of the realm of possibility that they skid a bit. We’ll see.

Congratulations, Cincinnati. You just signed a mid 20s lefty with Jamie Moyer stuff, but not his command.
