I really like Sveum and Maddux in any capacity on the Sox. They’re a couple of good baseball guys from what I’ve heard and read about them. Also, I met Mike Maddux when I was like three years old, so +1!
As for Ortiz, he had a fine year, but he’s going to be 36 in November. I could see him getting two and an option, but definitely not three.

Well… I guess Sveum was a better 3rd base coach than Wendall Kim, but then again that’s not saying much.

Mike Maddux already has a job on a much better team. Why would he leave? Why would the Rangers let him leave?
mikecarlucci
Despite the collapse in Boston, the Rangers are not a “much better team” than the Red Sox. With the Rays, Yankees, and Tigers, both are dangerous teams that will do well next year. That said, there’s not much reason for him to want to leave Texas.

Based on rumors I’ve seen, I assume that Heyman was referring to Maddux being a candidate for manager, not pitching coach. Could be wrong, but I highly doubt the Rangers would want him to go (or he’d want to go) in a lateral move

that’s exactly what i thought, i was confused, i was thinking did we lost Curt Young to the Cubs too?
BoSoxSam
Nope, but we lost him to the A’s.
lefty177
I didn’t even remember that until you said that
GMwannabe
we didn’t “lose” Curt Young at all

I don’t think I’d do 3 years for Ortiz. I want him back but I would go as high as 2 years for around $25 mill

Someone needs to do a study of how many Red Sox got thrown out at the plate on account of Dale Sveum sending them from third when clearly she should have held the runner. Unless it was just every time I was watching, he’s a terrible base coach.
commenter3346
To be fair, Sveum was a tad better than Wendall Kim.
Mud
lol
Redsoxn8tion
So that means he’d make a terrible manager then? Dude, ANYBODY is better than Franconna!!
Redsoxn8tion
Everyone ignore Bleacher Creature’s comments. He always has Red Sox hating comments

If Ortiz is expecting 3 years, I am hoping his phone never rings from Cherrington at all and he wears any other uniform next season.
Give him the ‘Tek treatment from 2 seasons ago..let him call several times and beg his way back if no one else wants him, or if some one else does? sign there.. 3 years at what he is more than likely seeking would be a horrible boat anchor type deal.
j6takish
Papi is still a very useful MLB player, probably still the best pure DH in the game… to where as Tek had no place else to go. I think Boston will end up missing him a lot more than you all seem to think you will
RedSoxDynasty
One year with a team option for 10 mil each is all I hope the Sox offer Big Papi. He has zero leverage as he no longer has the fanbase behind him after last years team collapse!
Chaim Breslow's Purse
Make Maddux the manager, I think that could be a good idea.

Okay, so picture this if you will. I hear the name Sveum and I immediately hold up my fingers like a cross. This is the last guy the Sox need running the show. He’ll get every Sox baserunner tagged out half way to home. They need someone with a world of experience, who hasn’t been around Boston before, and can bark here and there to demand attention. I say MacKanin.

“Send ’em in” Sveum vs. “The Windmill” Wendell Kim.
I call it a wash.
