Would much rather they not do this now, as I think 2011 may well have been a career season for Masterson. I see great potential for regression, and one season doesn’t invalidate the scouts’ opinions that he might be better off as a reliever. If he has a great 2012, that would go a long way toward establishing Masterson as a legitimate #3 starter, but not off one season.

I would definitely like to see the Indians buck their normal trend and have Masterson signed to an extension. But it probably won’t happen this offseason. The Indians still need to gauge if they can still contend with the Tigers in the AL Central. If not, then Masterson becomes a pretty good trade chip.

If the Sox had traded him to the NL he would be in line for double the pay.

The Tribe doesn’t have ANYONE on contract past 2012, so don’t hold your breath for an extension. Hoynes from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, among others, has speculated that the franchise is setting up for an ownership change. Please, God, let that be true.
