Quick Hits: Helms, Davies, Blue Jays, Orioles

Here's the latest from the around the league, including updates on two low-profile free agents…

  • Wes Helms is currently working out and waiting for an opportunity with the right team, reports MLBTR's Tim Dierkes (on Twitter). The 35-year-old hit .191/.276/.236 with the Marlins last season before being released in August.
  • Free agent right-hander Kyle Davies is currently rehabbing from a December shoulder surgery, tweets Dierkes. Davies, 28, pitched to a 6.75 ERA in 13 starts for the Royals last year before getting released in August.
  • Sources tell Jeff Blair of The Globe and Mail that the Blue Jays will not add a starting pitcher owed significant money right now. A cheap, innings-eating stopgap is more likely. Toronto has been connected to Joe Blanton and Gavin Floyd recently.
  • Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com interviewed Orioles scouting director Gary Rajsich about the upcoming amateur draft. Baltimore holds the fourth overall pick this year.

I think Rogers buying of Maple Leafs seriously gutted their Blue Jays payroll capability.

Maybe… Or it probably has nothing to do with their payroll at all.

¬†Considering the bluejays runs as their own entity, this doesn’t seem all that likely.

That quote from blair is misleading. What does the money owed have to do with the acquisition? You knows whos a cheap pitcher, Matt Moore, and we won’t be adding him any time either.

I think what he’s trying to say is that the Jays would only consider a blaton if the phillies cover some payroll.. which is pretty obvious. Blair is just a professional troll

      Yes I agree

Ignoring the fact that the Jays operate under their own budget the Leafs are basically a money printing company, it wouldn’t negatively impact any spending by Rogers at all.

    Kyle Davies is just 28?!?!?!?

  3. AA just said that there would be no reason to add a back of the rotation starter, it would be no point considering the talent they have coming up, the are not looking for any inning eaters at this point.

I think if Wes helms gets ask to go to any team he should do it!

Who wants a 35-year-pld malcontent who hits under .200 with no power and can’t field? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

  6. ellisburks 3 years ago

Problem is that his agent is Boras so he wants 10/250 million.

¬†They wait for the right team/situation because they’ve made enough money they never have to work again.
