It’ll be a sad day for the A’s fans when McCarthy is gone. Hope no one bites.
RepOak
The guy only pitches every ten days. Why wouldn’t you see what you can get for him?
Anonymous Mcgee
Hmm how could Balfour possibly have more value than McCarthy? That’s absurd. Also he’s put up great numbers and has reached almost 200IPs last year…<3 ERA are you kidding me? McCarthy's awesome

balfour isn’t as much as an injury risk, and he has that option for 2013 whereas mccarthy always has shoulder trouble and is a FA after this year

4m is an awful lot of money for next year on a guy who will be 35YO and is a setup man, then giving up anything even resembling a middle prospect makes it even shakier.
The catching market is so bare still see Suzuki drawing back more because of his defensive skills and if he starts to hit again? Pure bonus.

Beane doesn’t have a whole lot of desired trade chips this non waiver period other than maybe Suzuki. I really don’t see Balfour bringing back an awful lot, same with McCarthy and they are going to have to beg someone to take Fuentes.
There are some nice pieces, but they need them to go forward for the future. They have the makings of a decent rotation for the future going forward, as well as a nice OF.
melonis_rex
Considering their current rotation hasn’t been terrible (except for certain spot-starters), and there’s currently 4 veteran starters on their DL, I’m confident about their pitching depth going forward.

They should have sent Colon packing as soon as the 1st team called looking. He is an injury in waiting.
I still see Milone and Parker as decent people to build upon.

Agree except Suzuki. $5 million this year and next for a catcher who can’t hit his weight? Maybe an NL team will bite.
With Anderson coming back in a few months McCarthy becomes expendable. Parker, Milone and Griffin give the A’s a nice, young nucleus of starters. They need to stop stubbornly running Tyson Ross out there, though. He’s not a starter. He’s never been a starter and he never will be a starter.

Agreed to a point. 3-4 years ago? Teams wouldn’t have looked at Suzuki. Then look at guys like John Buck.. Teams that are *possibly* in a wild card chase as the Fish are and guys, just awful like him. Sure Buck is getting paid major $$$, but it doesn’t mean he is any good at catching and one thing Suzuki can do, is play defense as good as anyone and not so sure he couldn’t bring his offense up a little in a more friendly stadium.
Catching around the league is in a pitiful state for many teams and Suzuki is better than many teams currently have.

It’s very confusing to me how this team keeps creating talent and yet cannot seem to pull together a winning season. I’m sure someone will bite at McCarthy and the A’s will get quite a haul.

Injuries, mostly. At the rate Cespedes is improving, and if Anderson comes all the way back, they could finally get it together next year, so they’re not going to be trading much of value for 2013.

I’d like to see the Jays make a run at McCarthy… although they probably don’t need any more injury prone starters…
