It would have been nice to include the Pedro Martinez/Clay Buchholz duo if you’re going to mention Pettitte/Hughes.

And the Pedro/Buchholz duo has actually produce more WAR than the Palmeiro/Roberts duo…

But alas, not everything in the universe has to be about the Red Sox and Yankees.

Since when?

One time that it looks to have been fair is Angels getting Mike Trout for losing Mark Teixeira.
Dante DeStefano
Teixeira didn’t produce a whole lot for the Angels

I understand your point with this article, but wouldn’t it be a better comparison if you compared the WAR of the veteran after he left the team to the WAR of the compensation player over that same span.
Say the veteran played for another 6 or 7 years after the trade and the compensation pick took 3 years to make it to the bigs. Comparing the WAR for both players over the 6 or 7 year span would be helpful in valuing the compensation. Of course the WAR of the comp pick would be zero until he actually made it to the bigs and any WAR accumulated by the comp pick after the retirement of the veteran could be looked on as icing on the cake.
You could also take the total WAR of the veteran after the trade and then measure how long it takes the comp pick to accumulate that WAR (if ever).

That’s not what he’s trying to do though, the point was to see how much value the team actually got out of the player (between the time they were actually with the team, and the value they got out of the compensation pick).
What you’re suggesting would be interesting as well, but it’s a completely different idea than what he was going for.
