PhreshPhillies
Cliff Lee. Isn’t. Being. Traded.
nm344
Buster is under the opinion that the Phililes are entering a long rebuild. He’ll be in for a surprise this winter.
PhreshPhillies
Ruben also said he has enough money to sign 2 major free agents in the offseason. If anything, I’m excited.
John Kappel
I wouldn’t be. The division has caught up to the Phillies. The Nats and Braves are only going to get better in the off-season.
nm344
How are they going to get better? Braves have huge holes in LF, CF, 3B and a starting pitching spot while guys like Hanson, Heyward and Prado are due hefty ARB raises.
Nats will need to replace EJax and do you really think their starting staff can repeat what they are doing this year?
John Kappel
They don’t have a hole at 3B because Prado slides there next season. LF is a problem yes, and I don’t see them signing Bourn either so CF will be an issue. However, their rotation should be better and they still have the depth to trade for someone to shore up one of those to outfield spots.
dylanp5030
Braves are a good team no doubt. But they could end up losing Bourn to FA if they don’t open up their pockets (which I don’t think they will). Their rotation could get better with another year under their belts, but it really depends on guys like Delgado and Teheran’s development.
nm344
Phillies did what they had to. Now they have over $30 million to spend this winter for a CF and 3B. Only reason to call them ‘losers’ is that they didn’t trade Blanton, Pierre or Wigginton as well.
East Coast Bias
I don’t know if it’s to spend in the off season, or to offset the money they have already spent on Hamels, etc.
nm344
They have 30 million to spend after accounting for Hamels
Jimcass134
They also have massive TV deal in the coming years. They have money to spend especially if they are able to trade off Rollins/Lee/Doc/Utley in the off season. Doc/Utley are both done after next season so teams could take a shot at them.
dylanp5030
I don’t get the trade everyone and clear up room for FA.
Have you not looked at the FA to be in the next two years. (Position Players only)
There are:
Hamilton
Bourn
Victorino
Pence
Granderson
Cruz
and Ellsbury
then no other really impact players (Cano and Wright will sign extensions almost guarenteed)
Jimcass134
When I say trade, I want them to do it not just to clear up salary but to get young talented prospects or MLB players. Like Cliff Lee for example. I want them to eat a decent chunk of his contract if it allows them to get 2-3 top notch prospects. If they could trade him to the Rangers and get 2-3 of Profar, Olt, Martin, Perez, I would be ecstatic. Profar could play SS and Galvis can play 2nd, Olt would solve the issue at 3rd, Martin would solve the issue at CF, and Perez would be another very good Pitching prospect. That’s what
i mean when I say trade them because I do not believe the Phillies need to move guys just to clear some cap. They can afford all these contracts if they want to, but if they can get highly touted prospects that can fill in multiple holes for a guy like Cliff, why not right?
vtadave
Except no team is going to trade highly-touted prospects for a pitcher on the wrong side of 30 who is owed close to $90 million over the next three years. If they Rangers had offered up just Profar, then Cliff Lee would be wearing a Rangers jersey today.
Jimcass134
Maybe it has to do with the amount of money Amaro was comfortable eating at the deadline where everything is crammed into one week. Things can change in the off season. Clearly you didn’t take that into consideration before posting your comment.
vtadave
No, I did, but you’re not taking into account how valuable guys like Profar are. He might even be the best prospect in baseball, and those guys just don’t get dealt. Now considering the Rangers have a 3B already, Olt could be expendable, but unless the Phillies eat a bunch of that money, I imagine the Rangers would rather keep Olt and pursue a guy like Anibal Sanchez on the open market.
Jimcass134
That’s what I said before about Amaro eating a decent chunk. I’m talking about 40-60 million which would cover half to two thirds of Lee’s remaining salary. I know that seems extreme but guys like Profar can help them contend for years to come.
East Coast Bias
Am I missing something? Everyone saying White Sox are winners. All they did was get Liriano, right? Or is there another trade I’m forgetting?
goodgm
they got youkilis
East Coast Bias
Ah, Youk… forgot about that one. My bad.
nm344
and Myers

Teams don’t play nice anymore and let players pass through waivers so a team(s) can make a trade. Lowrie gets claimed. He can play both 3b and SS. Too many teams still need both of those positions and even if he is a walking medical ward.. The guy is barely making 1m a year.. He gets claimed..
melonis_rex
Yeah, I really can’t see Lowrie making it past say, the Cubs.
johnsilver
We had an exchange few weeks ago regarding Mike Aviles. Think he would even be an upgrade in Oakland honestly and I had thoughts (hopeful ones at least) that Boston might be shopping him prior to the deadline and Boston going with Cirriaco and Iglesias..
Yes.. Aviles is a hacker.. THAT is bad, but he does hit and actually has pretty fair power for a middle IF/3b. Who knows? Maybe after the season he could end up in Oakland anyway, cause i don’t think it would take much to get him.
johnsilver
“The time also seemed ripe to shuffle what has been an underwhelming everyday lineup”
Quick look at stats for all 30 MLB teams.. Boston, without Ellsbury and Crawford the 1st 90 games of the season, Ross for 30 games are top 5-7 in virtually EVERY offensive category and that is not just in the AL, but ALL OF MLB teams.
Jon Paul Morosi has -0- clue. I could have made some sense if he had written something resembling that Boston gone out and gotten a SP, maybe moved some players, or something a few other clueless writers have repeated over the last weeks, but ohhh noooo. Morosi had to one up them and get into the Dan Shaugnessy, “I am a dolt” category and dream up something that was NEVER a problem this year… Scoring runs..
Morosi.. I crown thee..King Dolt the 1st..

I dont understand how selling teams, such as the phillies are considered losers, obviously they will getweaker because they’re giving up major league talent, but keeping them wasnt going to make a difference.
Jwick22
They are judging by the talent they recieved in the trades. But its all opinions and everybody has one
Javier Mejia
what were they suppose to get, pence had a sub 800 ops, and victorino had less than a year, when you look at that, they got reasonable value. talent received, is what they shouild of gotten for value given.
neoncactus
I think the Dodgers could have gotten almost any offensive player and been declared a winner. At least it’s obvious Frank McCourt is no longer around!
Blue387
Alderson should have acquired someone. Other than Wheeler last season, the Mets have been quiet at the deadline for years. Would have helped arrest the team’s struggles in the second half.
Kevin Namendorf
Cliff Lee isn’t going to get traded!
Tyler Groesch
maybe pirates will get jed lowrie
crashcameron
phillies lose simply on Pence. who knows down the roiad of course but they paid high and flipped him for less a year later. in the meantime he was maybe their most consistent hitter (cheech aside)
crashcameron
sanchez they hope, infante for sure, fill immediate holes for los tigres. but hhhhhmmmmm … jacob turner. i cant help thinking doyle alexander/john smoltz !
