Central Notes: Garza, Royals, Beltran, Sellers

Sticking with the Cubs didn't work out for Matt Garza, and now the Brewers starter wants to "kick their teeth in every time I get the chance," Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Garza isn't as angry as that makes it sound, though — he's just an energetic player looking for motivation. Wittenmyer notes that the Cubs had previously offered Garza a five-year extension that might have been worth around $65MM, but the two sides couldn't settle on a deal, and the Cubs ended up shipping him to the Rangers in the middle of last season. Here are more notes from the Central divisions.

Considering the state income tax, if it were about the money, Beltran would have signed with the Royals….I think.

Not really that big a difference if it’s a smaller offer. Although living in Missouri is way cheaper.

        On a deal of 42.5mil that’s a 1mil difference…I’d say thats a pretty big difference.

Seeing as you only consider that rate for the games within your state it is $710,000 if you take the top tax rate, which it isn’t because MO has a flat tax, while NY’s top bracket starts at over a million. All for an offer that was $2.5MM smaller.

I think it was more than just the money.

Royals would have needed to address the DH position with Beltran in the lineup multiple seasons. Would have likely meant Butler being dealt

Beltran has wanted to be a Yankee for quite a while, he just wasn’t yet old enough.
