I still like that big trade by Miami. They tried, and saw they were no where close to a playoff team. So instead of paying for several players decline years they got a great haul of young prospects. It makes more sense for the team long term, not to be stuck in that middle ground.

What I get annoyed by, is that the Astros tore it down even more.
But they are not getting almost any criticism.
I think it’s because Astros got Luhnow and Goldstein, Luhnow, who everyone think is so smart, and Goldstein who was the Cool Guy in saber metric community. Thus, they get away with it for some weird reason.
Fwiw, I feel confident that Miami will have a better team than Astros. Both in the short and long run.

Large part is that they sold big on name brand free agents. Astros are making it known they rebuilding. I’d be annoyed sure if I was a Marlins fan or player, but I think it was the right move for the team. There is no point really of being that middle ground team.

That and they committed a large amount of money for the long term expecting to be able to be able to afford such contracts. It makes sense if their reasoning is attendance related, I just hope they end up actually spending some of that money they shaved

They had a better offseason then the Dbacks 🙁

“It’s more of a team, and not a bunch of individuals walking around in a forced environment,” Stanton said. “It’s something that needs to continue once adversity happens. But the way we’re going about it is the way winning teams go about it.”
I think this quote says Stanton is not all that unhappy with the offseason moves.

so many former cubs.

Steve, i was surprised to see you pick the marlins in last place. IMO they’re at least better than the phillies. I think they and the mets will duke it out for the third place behind Hotlanta and Washington. But wouldn’t be entirely surprised to see Miami in the top two. They got a nice little ball club going.

Too much has to go right. I am a fan, but trying to be realistic. They have another year or two before the plan really takes effect. They could finish higher, but you need all the young arms to pitch well, the bullpen to reach potential, Yelich and Ozuna to be above average, Hech to not be the worst offensive player in 20 years, then third and first to not be black holes offensively as well. The only things we can count on is Fernandez and Stanton.

I used to be a phillies supporter, but can’t stand amaro. I’ll be back rooting for them when he’s gone.
Tell me please how Marlins could end up below the Phillies? What part of the ball club are better in Philly? I can’t think of one area.

They are in a similar boat, but with more “name” power. Cliff Lee is usually awesome, so is Hamels. But then come the question marks, If Utley and Howard produce what they can and stay healthy, thats big right there. Will Byrd and Brown produce? Is the bullpen going to work? They could easily be good, or easily be terrible. The Marlins are banking on some pretty big IFs as well
burnboll
I respectfully disagree.
Or, you’re right in that Phillies have more name power.
But whom would rather have cliff lee and cole Hamels, with his recent injury, instead of Jose Fernandez and Alvarez? I bet very few.
Marlins are far from a loaded contender. But over a long season, they are a much better pick than the Phillies.
I think the troubles are over for the Marlins. Wouldn’t be surprised at all to see them in the
WS in 3 years. Will probably be a .500 club this season already.
Fernandez could be the new King Felix.

Is that Salty or Josh Hamilton?

Morrison an upgrade over Mark Reynolds? I don’t know about that one. Reynolds’ career OPS of .793 is higher than Morrison’s .764. Reynolds has had more HR in one season than Morrison has for his career. Morrison is 4 years younger and a lefty bat but I don’t think the Brewers are unhappy they got Reynolds for nothing rather than dealing a player for Morrison.

The Braves will remain the top team in the NL East and the Nationals will be close behind them. But the Marlins should be competitive with the Phillies and especially the Mets. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they manage to climb out of the cellar. In no way will they be a likely play off candidate, there’s just too much inexperience and too many question marks but they have a good young core in their pitching and OF and they have depth in both departments, so they can give different players a chance.
Catcher is the position they should have been most worried about and they signed Salty, which is an upgrade to what they had, so that’s a plus. Solano and Dietrich aren’t ready for an everyday job but if they back up Furcal and McGehee, they will get their playing time. McGehee can hold down the fort long enough for Moran to develop and he looks like he’s on a fast track to the bigs (I’d venture a guess as a september call up).
To me, 1B (especially defensively) is the biggest question mark going forward. But LoMo’s defense wasn’t terribly superb either, so the Baker/Jones combo should at least be able to provide some power and might also be used to assist the young kids in the OF every so often. Almost all the signings made sense, which is a lot different if you compare it to recent Marlins offseasons.
