Poor Twins

Great write-up. I really liked a lot of what the Twins did this off season with exception to the Pelfrey signing. That move really irks me, seemed unnecessary and just clogs a roster spot for two years with a guy who if things break right is a quality #5 pitcher.

I don’t think it really clogs anything. If he pitches well, he could be traded next offseason or during the season next year. Correia could also be gone by the trade deadline if he pitches well. Yeah, it does clog it a bit when you’ve got Deduno, Worley, Diamond and Gibson now competing for that fifth spot, but Worley and Diamond aren’t that great and wouldn’t be terribly missed if they get picked up on waivers and Gibson struggled enough last year where he might need a bit more seasoning yet.

The same could be said of Worely , Diamond and Deduno. If they pitch well they could also be traded and it’s hard to see how the results will be all that different between anyone of them and Pelfrey. The difference Is they cost a lot less and can be nontendered if they fail. Considering Gibson’s age, they need to have him adjust at the major league level. There isn’t much benefit of having him tread water at AAA any longer, especially since his upside is higher than any of the current rotation members. Not to mention Meyer and May could be up at some point this season.

For the record, it’s only two, not three, last place finishes in the AL Central. As bad as the Twins have been, the Chicago White Sox were worse last season.

Edited, thanks. Steve must be subconsciously downgrading his hometown team.

Pretty good offseason for the Twins. The outlook looks good for 2015 if Sano recovers well

They needed some arms. The bats are solid coming up, but the arms are lagging. There’s a chance that the Twins make progress in a hurry. Buxton and Sano will likely have immediate impact when they arrive.

What exactly has pelfrey ever done to warrant any type of non-milb contract?

I have decent hopes. I’m hoping for the starters to give a 4.60 ERA or better. I’m also hoping that they somehow manage 76-78 wins. They were on pace for 72 when Mauer got his concussion in mid-August last year. So with how terrible they were 70+ wins was still possible in mid-August…
I’m more worried about the offense rather than the pitching. I really hope they become more bearable to watch. I watch regardless, but it was tough. Corriea was the most/only watchable SP and I wouldn’t have ever guessed that would happen.
