It would make more sense if he was locking up long-term, but I used the Roy Halladay as an example of overpaying because you got #1)guaranteed years of service(via extension) and #2)DISCOUNT since he was signing for $20m a year when he could have gotten more on the open market.
Price is unlikely to sign a long-term deal and also unlikely to sign discounted. He’s going to go for max money on the FA market. In a lot of ways Cole Hamels would make more sense(4 years of $22.5m), but Seattle is on his no-trade list.

My point was Halladay didn’t really take a discount though. In 2010, there were only 6 players making $20MM or more and only two were pitchers, CC-$24.3 and Santana-$20.1. He may have given a slight discount on years, but he was signing for his age 34-36 seasons with an option for his age 37 season and had already thrown almost 2700 pro innings through age 32.
