“On the whole, Rasmus leaves the impression that his production on the
field and enjoyment of the game tend to go hand-in-hand, and that he
hopes to find an environment in which both can thrive.”
That sounds like a Rays’ kind of player.
DarthMurph
I could see that, but he’s going to need to take something like 7 million to make that work. I don’t see TB paying him an eight figure salary. Jedi Master Maddon’s appeal should be enough.
Dynasty22
I know, plus the Rays don’t really need outfielders anyway.
DarthMurph
True, but it wouldn’t be too difficult to find a place for him. There’s been trade talk surrounding Joyce and to a lesser extent Myers. DH is wide open for an OF to rotate.
I’m not sure they’d actively pursue him, but if Rasmus decided TB was his top choice and if he’d take a deal like that, I think they’d jump on it.
LazerTown
He doesn’t deserve $12MM though. Unless you catch him in one of his fluke years he is a pretty bad player, and has always been.
Goriax
LaRussa ruined what could have been a regular all star center fielder.
DippityDoo
What did LaRussa do to him?
theagent39
LaRussa made a promise to him before he made it to the majors and LaRussa very badly broke his promise. The relationship never got better because Colby never forgave LaRussa.
Colby has amazing talent but I think the sour taste LaRussa left with Colby cost him his love of the game.
jill
Yes, I could see him thriving under a guy like Joe Maddon and a team like the Rays. A lot of the dynamics between rookies and veterans and between stars and bench players are completely different on a Maddon run team. They have a lot of fun at the park and off the field with Maddon being the head goofball.
I always wondered what would have become of Rasmus if he would have ended up on a team that developed him paying more attention to what he could do instead of focusing on what he couldn’t do, a team that might have realized early on that he wasn’t going to be able to convert the tools he had the way they wished he would and just exploited the power. He does have a real pretty power stroke and maybe someone, somewhere can hopefully unleash it so he can be consistent.
Goriax
He wont play on turf full time again.
Goriax
He won’t sign another contract to play on turf in front of 100 people per night.
DarthMurph
I think Rasmus could opt to take a lesser deal than 12 AAV if he has particular preferences as to where he wants to play. Which he probably should value more than the money. He seems to be somewhat picky on that front.
LazerTown
I would go maybe $5MM hoping to catch lightning, anything more than that is kind of too much for the type of player he is.
DarthMurph
I agree. 12 million is too high. 5 is likely around what he’ll end up with, especially since he seems to make more of a deal about where he plays than other players which will cut down on suitors.
Jaysfan1994 2
Rasmus doesn’t know how to hit when the overshift is on him, last year they didn’t play the shift on him more than 10-20% of the time. This year they had it on him at least 50% of the time and his numbers dove off a cliff because of it. His spray charts say he’s hit about 12-13 ground balls to the left side of the field combined over the last two seasons and I know for a fact about half of those are bunts. Maybe playing in a spacious field would do the guy wonders, but he I feel extremely bad for whoever signs this guy expecting to get the 2013 Colby Rasmus.
LazerTown
He has always been pretty bad. There wasn’t really a reason to believe that he was any different of a player last winter, and that 2013 was pretty flukey. His BABIP went down to the range it always is, and he returned to the player he always was.
slasher016 2
Give the guy a little credit. He’s not a star but he’s never had a negative bWAR season. He’s a 1-2 bWAR player that has some value, he’s not Ryan Ludwick for example.
LazerTown
1 WAR players don’t get $12MM on the market. I’m not saying his career is over, I’m sure someone will take a shot on him. Not at that price, and hard time seeing a contender that will take him as a starter.
Joe Orsatti 2
I can’t see a three year contract for Rasmus ending well. I believe 1 year maybe 6.5 (Jason Hammel type) would be perfect.
Frank I. 2
i say White Soxs 2 yr deal worth 24m with maybe a 3rd yr performance option worth 16m
LF Rasmus CF Eaton RF Garcia
3B Gillaspie SS Ramirez 2B (make a trade) 1B Abreu
C Flowers DH Viciedo
trade for Justin Turner to play 2B
sign a right handed starting pitcher
bobbleheadguru
Tigers will break the bank for VMART and possibly Price in the offseason. Scherzer is gone. Their budget for their gaping CF hole is not going to be that great.
If the Red Sox want too much for JBJ in a trade, this might be a fit. Better hitter, worse fielder than JBJ… but still better than anyone the Tigers would have in house at CF.
RiseAgainst3598
I absolutely agree. I feel this is probably our best option, plus we could use a little more left handed pop. What would you say the contract would be? 2 and 16 mil?
RiseAgainst3598
Unless we could pry Joc Pederson from the Dodgers crowded outfield. No idea what we would give though.
bobbleheadguru
I like JBJ (Jackie Bradley Jr.) as an acquisition, because the Red Sox have to get rid of him because of their overcrowded outfield…. they have motivation.
There is risk that he will never hit… BUT, the Comerica Park OF is so big, he could add a lot of value just on defense.
tune-in for baseball
Rasmus could still be poison for his slide into Infante in 2013. You are right about Price and VMart, so a new CF may have to be obtained by trade. I have been hoping for Revere, Span or Fowler. All left handed or switch hitters with good speed that can be top of the order bats. Since Kinsler refuses to go the opposite way when they need to move a runner over, he should be moved down to one of the 6-9 spots and provide some pop.
Mr Pike
I saw nothing in Rajii Davis this year to indicate he couldn’t be the regular center fielder.
A guy who hits .220 with 125 strikeouts would be a downgrade, especially with only a handful of stolen bases. I don’t care if he did hit 18 homers in the Toronto bandbox.
tigerfan98
Rajai Davis did not look good defensively in center field.
RiseAgainst3598
Tigers. Give Him 2 Year 16 Million and he should take it. Platoon him with Rajai Davis. He’ll fit right in giving The Tigers some left-handed pop.
bobbleheadguru
$12MM for a platoon player? Nope.
RiseAgainst3598
3 and 24 then? That will get us to the 1st rounder we signed this year. Derek Hill.
bobbleheadguru
My point is that he has to be an everyday player at that amount. I could see the Tigers not taking the option on Soria, and instead signing Rasmus at about the same dollars. He is young enough to give a multi-year contract to… the question is whether he is good enough.
Curt Green
They need a bullpen and new manager more.
bobbleheadguru
Ironically, they may not do much with the bullpen because 100MPH Rodon is coming back and Soria’s option is likely to be exercised. They need a washed up, cheap starter that is relatively young and has a good arm… the next Britton.
New manager is not happening. They will have to hope that Ausmus has learned from his mistakes.
Mr Pike
I definitely can see an established free agent set up guy being added before a center fielder. Like you said, with Rondon and Putkonan coming back from injury, the rest of the bullpen could be manned internally.
chicothekid
Mets need an OF and would be VERY happy with a short term deal because they have some guys in the minors who just aren’t ready yet. They have some money to work with this offseason as well. But would he be willing to play RF?
Goriax
Strengths:
– Hits REAL long homers but only once in a blue moon
– knows how to comb his hair with a porkchop
Weaknesses
– consistency
– changing his batting stance every 5 games.
teufelshunde4
Love the diplomatic swipe at the Cardinals for expecting the young Rasmus to bring some dedication and intensity to the game. I question that someone truly LOVEs something based on an adverse reaction to being asked to apply himself..
Typical Rasmus excuses… Uber talented player who has failed to play up to his true talent level.
Such a shame..
Who ever spends mega bucks on him will love him for about a week a month and hate him for the other 3 weeks.
