Stanton’s probably going to ask for, and get, way more in arbitration. $13MM is a steal for a guy like him.
Jeff Todd
I’m not sure what Matt’s thoughts are this year, but last year he wrote that Stanton could easily outperform the projection model. (Which he did.) There’s always an element of negotiation, PR, future considerations going on, esp. for a guy like Stanton who is a star who they want to extend.
But I guess this is what the model says.
sdsny
One thing’s for sure, Stanton and his agent have quite a bit of leverage. The Marlins need Giancarlo Stanton. He doesn’t need to be a Marlin.
Jeff Todd
Yes, they do have a ton of leverage. No question about that. Though this is a good time for him to do an extension, too, if he wants to stay in Miami.

Wow with the surplus of good young pitchers with Fernandez coming back and if Heaney and DeSalafani potentially step up. I wonder if the Marlins entertains the idea
to trade Henderson Alvarez or Koehler for a young and controllable impact bat?
ivan-2
Alvarez isn’t going anywhere (Jose and Hendo are BFFs and Marlins lifers) but Koehler and Eovaldi could be used as trade bait to get either a 2B or 3B long term solution.
rct 2
Is there such a thing as a ‘Marlins lifer’?
ivan-2
touché. But this is a new age for the Marlins. Everything is coming together nicely. Hopefully these guys (Yelich, Alvarez, Stanton, Heaney, Fernandez) they all stay with the Marlins their entire careers, or at least past their prime. I don’t care if we are like the phillies towards the end of their careers.
DarthMurph
Alvarez debuted with the Jays.
ivan-2
So did Hech but you can still be a lifer if you spent virtually your entire career with one team.
Gland1
Henderson Alvarez has pitched two seasons with the Marlins. Is that what constitutes being a Marlins lifer these days?
ivan-2
He isn;t a lifer yet but he is a great candidate to be one. He pitches great, He’s Venezuelan (Good for selling seats) He loves Miami and his friends, and we nicknamed him “The Entertainer” because he is really fun to watch. He always has an unbuttoned jersey, he mixes in random 58 MPH curveballs that almost look like a eeuphus pitch, he fields his position really well and he has like 4 shutouts including a no hitter going back to last year.
Gland1
So calling him a lifer is just your hope is what you’re saying
ivan-2
yes. I guess I should have said “Henderson Alvarez and Jose Fernandez are going to be Marlins lifers”
Jeff Todd
Don’t see Alvarez moving, but some of the other guys could probably be had. Then again, they just went and got Cosart for guys who you might hope would become young/controllable/impact bats, so I’m not sure they’d give up someone they already had under control.
Obviously if they had a chance to add someone they liked at a position of need, that could make sense. Were I in charge, though, I’d keep the pitching, let it sort itself out, and wait for someone to come calling wanting to convince me to give up one of these guys.
VAR
They have a very good young foundation, and an outfield most teams would love to have. Now the only question is whether they can put it all together before they start losing players. A few solid veterans and they may make the playoffs next season.

Time for an annual MLBTR tradition: commenters proposing Giancarlo Stanton trade scenarios!
stl_cards16
I see a comment like this more often than I see a Stanton trade proposal.
Chioakcisco
Fair enough. Honestly I’m glad the proposals are dying down, that core of Stanton and Fernandez is one of the most exciting in baseball.
sdsny
Speaking of which, the Marlins can’t ask for enough at this point. Stanton could very well be the NL MVP. You want to see him just to see how far he hits a baseball that night. He’s easily the Marlins’ biggest draw.
