Err, is this just a way to keep the Reds from stashing one (or both) back in the minors? That seems like an anti-competitive move by the Dodgers.
stymeedone
Its interesting that the Dodgers are finding value in these players when no one who finished below them in the standings did. It will be fascinating to see if they knew something the other teams didn’t.

Do the Dodgers pay a guy to just sit there and keep his finger on the waiver wire button?
Andy Kleinman
Shouldn’t every team?
Brian Lynch
Sure seems like it.

The Reds seemed to have flubbed this one up as much as anything. They DFA’d both pitchers in order to bring up non-40 man guys Josh Smith and Kyle Skipworth. Then they sent down both players without ever using them in a game. I think the real culprit is the 10 day rule following the start of the season. That rule really needs to be changed, but kudos to the Dodgers for exploiting the loophole.

What was the point of claiming Dennick?
Ray Ray
Now they can try to get him through waivers and keep him in the minors as depth. It’s worked before. The Blue Jays used to do it all the time.

Now there is the right explanation.
I guess they are betting on the possibility no other team attempts it and they get 2 extra relievers free.
Fallito
ALiberatore was going to Dodgers; they need to fill a spot in AAA; suddenly Corcino is available; Corcino is better; Dennick becomes expendable.

Not suddenly, simultaneously.
