Do you think the Nats give Span a QO? And it they do, do you think he becomes the first to accept it? 16M is almost double what he’s made in any season.
Jeff Todd
I think he is definitely worthy of an offer (assuming continued health), though I’m not 100% sure they’ll make one after passing on Edwin Jackson a few years back when there was no question he’d have declined it. (Though given that he and Boras agreed to a one-year deal before that year, I wonder if the team did not want to do it for strategic reasons.)
I have a hard time seeing him taking the offer, if made. Sure, it’s a nice bump in annual salary, but he was only earning what he is because he entered an early extension.
Spitballing, Span looks like a four-year, maybe $12MM AAV guy to me. (Think Bourn contract.) QO would hurt somewhat, of course, but he’s good enough not to be killed by it. You take that guarantee over 1/$16MM every day of the week.
Te Stone
He will get one and decline…remember, it’s a gaurenteed contract…if he gets 12 million a year for 4 years, thats 48 million. If he signs the one year tender and has a bad year, he won’t see anything near 4/48 in 2016…
Jeff Todd
Then we agree, haha. Was just chatting with Steve Adams and we both see him in that 4/48 range, with some upside above it.
At age 31, it’s time to cash in.
Te Stone
We must have been replying at the same time…
Scott Berlin
I’ve been saying the same for the last couple offseasons. I remember getting in some heated debates on this site when people said that Robertson would accept a QO from the Yankees and that they were foolish to extend him one which would have been the highest salary for a reliever; and he still went for the guaranteed money.
Jeff Todd
Yes, and that is a drum that Steve and I beat quite forcefully last fall as well. (And it worked out well for Robertson.)

I’m sorry M’s Jackson.
I am for real.

Never meant to make your daughter cry

My reply of “Never meant to make your fanbase cry, I apologize a trillion times” was removed… was that necessary?
sdsuphilip
Would not mind span on padres assuming (pretty safely) that upton leaves.
Draven Moss
Wouldn’t they have Renfroe to take over?
petcopadre
IF Upton leaves, I’d take Span or Renfroe. Renfroe, although a great player in the minors, should not be thrown into a starting role. I’d like to see him in a platoon role before taking it permanently. Besides, Kemp has not done well and Renfroe may be his future replacement.
sdsuphilip
Renfroe is just a corner OF, my guess is he is nothing more than trade bait. I think with early results they will go into next year with a true starting CF. Though I guess it’s possible myers or kemp is moved to 1B long term. Myers graded out average in RF so I would hope that’s his long term spot.

No Rasmus?

Whoever gets Span will be getting a gem of a player. I will be sorry to see him leave the Nats.
Melvin Mendoza, Jr.
Dexter Fowler is a player who proves that these ‘advanced’ defensive metrics need some serious adjustment. If you watch him play games his defense looks outstanding.
Blah blah blah
Its the opposite, actually.
william032
I don’t know about fowler, But when the defensive metrics have JT snow as a -11.2 Dwar player you know the metrics are very flawed.
Melvin Mendoza, Jr.
They are especially brutal to first basemen, the metrics apparently think teams might as well stick a cardboard cutout on the bag. And blah, I just see him making not only the routine plays but also covering a ton of ground and running down balls most players couldn’t. Watching him play I don’t really understand why he’s regarded as a train wreck in the field.
TheRealRyan 2
That is because of the negative positional adjustments that first basemen get. If you look at the raw numbers that they show on FG for the end of his career, they generally show him as an above average defensive first baseman.
norcalbb
The A’s seem super high on Billy Burns and so far his defense alone has been stellar, I would be shocked if they were looking for a CF’er
Drazthegr8
Span has been great for the past year. Too bad we can’t keep him and trade Werth.
