Shields and Benoit to Twins for Nolasco, Arcia, and Stewart.
Niekro
They are almost out of the woods with Nolasco I don’t think they’d go deeper in the woods with Shields the money doesn’t match up unless the Padres include a lot of cash.
Rezonator
Who would you rather take a risk with? Nolasco or Shield? I’d take the latter.
Niekro
It would be something close to a 40 million dollar risk for a pitcher who is signed through his age 36 season, I don’t think the Twins are the type of team that would take on that much money mid season.

Maybe use him as a starter for a couple years and then convert him to a set up man. Expensive yes…but at least get value for some of the Nolasco money you are spending.
Thomas Carrano
Why would the padres want Nolasco or Arcia?
mnkurt
Padres save money by swapping Shields for Nolasco. Twins at least get a usuable arm for the money. Arcia still has potential. Stewart is the piece that makes the deal worth it for Pads.
Rezonator
I don’t think moving Stewart would be a huge loss for the Twins or a huge gain for the Padres–he hasn’t been too impressive so far.
I think Arcia holds more value to the club, so I’d rather see someone like Vargas moved instead (but I assume Vargas holds very little value to the Padres).

Jorge Mateo and Greg Byrd for Shields and Benoit. It’s worth it the Padres can’t complain about that haul especially if Gary Sanchez gets thrown in we don’t need him we have catching for daaays. You keep Severino and Judge which are your real centerpeices for the future. As long as SD eats a lil bit of Shields’ contract it’s all goood. Now we have years of control on a quality veteran starter and a rotation next year that consists of Shields, Tanaka, Pineda, the developing and ever improving and cost friendly Eovaldi, and the so-so-but-eff-it-we’re-stuck-with-him and occasionally brilliant Sabathia. Aaand Severino and Judge are on the come up. Thats FIRE! We’ll be competeting for years to come.

Would rather move Mateo and Sanchez. Bird could potentially replace Tex and Sanchez is blocked for the foreseeable future. It’s not that big of a drop off and quite honestly, giving up two top 5 prospects for a starter with a high salary and a reliever is not worth it. If that dropoff isn’t worth it to the Padres, than it’s no deal.

Maybe Derek Norris is included as well….
