Damn. Hate to see him hurt again.
But wow, Miami is gonna compete with the 76ers for the king of tanking.

Wait until late August when the Phillies trade Harang, shut down Nola and Morgan, and call up Biddle. Its going to be ugly.
flyerzfan12
oh man. Then all the Phillies will need to do is convince Sandberg to come back to manage the final 1.5 months and call up MAG to start every game.
Brixton
Sandberg really wasn’t as bad as everyone thinks, and Pete isn’t as great as everyone thinks. Sandberg had to start Sean O’Sullivan, Severino, Jerome Williams and Kevin Corriea for what, 40-45 combined starts? Doesn’t help.
Pete is still 2 games under .500, despite a 14-5 record post-allstar break.

I agree, they field a better team now than they did when Ryne was in charge. But I also don’t think Sandberg is cut out for the majors, at least not right now. A manager can only do so much with a lack of talent to put out there on the field, but his inability to communicate with his players was clearly an issue, especially about their roles (something J-Roll mentioned after leaving).
And I can’t root against the team, especially because I want to see the young players improve. But I can’t help but think of how clutch that extra draft pool money would be if they finished with the worst record.

If they want to tank, they should KEEP Harang

I suspect Sandberg could suffer from a syndrome that seems to affect many former athletes who turn to the coaching ranks. He was so good at what he did as a 2B, it can be very difficult to convey things to less talented players. In addition he probably carries expectations of certain outcomes that are beyond the abilities of some players no matter how hard they work. Think of it this way, who was the last player in any sport who was a Hall of Fame player who was even remotely successful as a coach or manager? Pick a sport — it rarely happens.

Seems riding him this hard after he came back from TJS was a mistake. 112 pitches on 8/2. He shouldn’t have thrown more than 80 in a start this season.

I Agree !

It would be awful if Fernandez became the next JJ and stayed hurt as the next great looking pitcher whose career became derailed in Miami from arm, then shoulder injuries. Just like JJ’s has become.

Marlins need to shout the Kid down for the Rest of Season, Going no where this year, save for the next 10.
kingjenrry
He’s a free agent after three more seasons and I doubt he resigns with this joke of a team.

Not a Marlins fan at all but speaking purely as a baseball fan, it really sticks that this guy can’t stay healthy. He’s so good that I don’t mind watching him sit down hitter after hitter, even on my own team. Once in a generation talent.
phillyphanatics
Are there any Marlins fans left?

Haha. Never heard that one before!!

Why whenever Jose Fernandez is mentioned, do you guys link it to the completely wrong Jose Fernandez at Baseball Reference?
Rbase
The references to player’s baseball reference pages (sounds odd) are quite often incorrect on this site. That’s not just for Jose Fernandez. I think the writers/editors should check this more carefully.
Note: This is not meant as bashing, but as a tip. The site is probably the best baseball-related site out there, but this would be a slight improvement.

You have no shot at anything in 2015. Shut him down and let him rest. Simulated games when he’s ready, but nothing major.
