Cliff Lee is one of those guys that should absolutely be in the Hall of Fame, but the stats and longevity just aren’t there.

I don’t know about “should absolutely be in the Hall.” He had a nice second half of his career, but he wasn’t very good in the first four full years. Nothing about him jumps off the page, whether they’re counting stats or rate stats.
He’s a very good pitcher but to me it takes more than very good to be in the Hall.

Yeah, I’d agree. He had 6 years where he was one of the best pitchers in baseball, but that’s not enough to get you in the HOF. A darn good career? Yes. But a HOF? Unfortunately not.

Baseball Reference puts it best:
Cliff Lee
26 Black Ink, 122 Gray Ink, 72 HOF Monitor, 30 HOF Standards
44.3 WAR/40.7 7yr peak/42.5 JAWS
Average HOFer
40 Black Ink, 185 Gray Ink, 100 HOF Monitor, 50 HOF Standards
73.9 WAR/50.3 7yr peak/62.1 JAWS
Cliff Lee lacks in every measure of a HOF player. If he can make a comeback and perform like he has since 2008, he might could make the HOF, but it would require him to pitch surprisingly well until he reaches 40.
