1. Get a new GM
2. Get a new manager
3. Dump Howard
4. Add a veteran lefty to the pen
5. Dump Ruiz
6. Add veteran SP depth
7. Be willing to to take a bad contract in order to add good prospects
If the Phillies can do 4 of those things (with #1 required), It should be a good off season.
As for Franco, I don’t see a good reason to bring him back. Why risk him injuring his risk again? Give his ABs to Blanco and Sweeney, both who are looking for a bench spot next year.

Seriously, wrist injuries are no joke. Derek Lee lost all his power after his collision with Furcal, he rushed back that year and his power stroke never really returned.

Does Mackanin count as a new manager? I’m kind of pulling for the guy he deserves a real shot.

Not a huge fan of his bullpen usage, but I wouldn’t mind him getting a shot in another rebuilding year. I don’t think hes the long term guy though. Hes been around a while already in a coaching capacity.

What are the chances that the 2016 manager is that long term guy? Typically one manager handles the rebuild, and another is the one who gets the chance to put them over the top.

Fair call on his bullpen management — but how much of that is due to the Phillies having a terrible lot of relievers as a whole? It’s not like Mackanin is dripping with talent to call upon to do the job when the terrible starting rotation forces him to go to the pen in the 5th inning or sooner 4 or 5 games a week.

What talent do they have that they could get good prospects by taking on bad deals?
Out of place Met fan
Think he means similar to Braves and Dodgers basically buying prospects by taking on salary.
ianthomasmalone
That’s what I thought, but it’s not really a smart idea nor is it particularly common.
The Phillies have deep pockets, but gambling like that just isn’t smart. I don’t think many teams would do what the Dbacks did in essentially selling Toussaint just to dump Arroyo.

I’m confused by what you mean here. The Phillies have deep pockets but gambling like that just isn’t smart? They have very little money on the books in the future, so there is no harm in taking on an unwanted contracted to get a good prospect coming back as well. If Arizona wanted to ditch Aaron Hill and his $12 million salary and included a good prospect with him, why wouldn’t the Phillies jump on that? If Hill had a good season then they can flip him later. If he doesn’t, then oh well, that’s what you expected and why you got a prospect to take him off the DBacks books. Money isn’t an issue to the Phillies.
The bigger issue will be finding a team to make that type of trade with the Phillies. After the Arroyo/Touki trade reactions, I don’t see many other GMs making deals like that.

Amaro absolutely Must Go. As a GM he did such a terrible job that he is on his 3rd manager and had to trade away Rollins,Utley,Hamels.
If those guys cant stay either can Amaro.
Id be perfectly fine if a new GM kept manager Pete Mackanin. He has done a nice job and the players seem to really like playing for him.

Trading all 3 away actually made some sense, well at least trading 2 of them away does. Cash in on Hamels while you can and dump some salary. J-Roll only had a year left so why not trade him away for some prospects and let Galvis get his shot at SS. Utley though…..that’s gotta be a tough one to swallow for Philly fans.
