Good. The idea of Wren coming in even as a yes man scared me. Hazen will hopefully act as a good advisor for Dombrowski and will probably means there won’t be a mass exodus of the current staff.

The last time the Sox promoted an AGM up to GM, we got Ben Cherington and a host of terrible decisions. So now they’re… going to do that again? I know DD is going to be very involved so things will be different, but I was hoping that they’d go outside the organization for this.

Cherington also did a ton of good work for the Sox, including a stupidly good farm system.
He made a couple of FA mistakes in Panda and Hanley, but he also won a WS due to his FA/trade style

Agree on building the farm, but Cherington made some horrendous trades and, in my mind, that did him in as much as the two bad FA signings.

Add the extension of Porcello for $82 M–over $250 M adding in Hanley and Pablo…you have to ask who gave the OK to BenC–the buck could have stopped at Larry’s, Tom’s or ultimately John Henry’s desk.
Hazen has been here a while–knows the farm, which DD hasn’t seen, with his late hire. With Rule 5 coming and the draft Hazen should be valuable.

How much of the farm system was actually Ben? His terrible moves are going to be what he’s remembered for. I think we can all admit that he got pretty lucky with Victorino and Napoli’s 2013 numbers, too. That whole season was bizarre (and wonderful).

He also is not going to be making decisions.

We also got a WS win and he left the team with the start of a solid youth movement.
Cherington suffered from the same affliction that destroyed Theo’s tenure in Boston. He stopped making the right moves and started making the flashy ones.

You would think that would make fans realize maybe those big FA decisions aren’t being made by the GM

Hazen is basically still an assistant GM. Dombrowski will be running the show.
