Bittersweet moment for me. Affeldt has been one of my favorite players, both due to his achievements on the field, but his work off the field.
Hopefully he can use this time to make a difference in the world… it was a worthy career, Mr. Affeldt.

$42 million in career earnings. Not bad. I’d quit too.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
Over $45,000 per inning for an entire career!

I don’t understand why he doesn’t wait until after next season so he can get another World Series ring. What Giant retires after an odd numbered season?
kershawsrightarm
He must know something other Giants don’t know lol.

Giants will have Osich and Lopez next year. I’m sure if Affeldt signed a deal somewhere, it would be low and after a year of struggling and a couple different injuries, he might see it as a chance to go spend time with his family rather than take the risk.
Can’t blame him.

Obviously, his contract is up at the end of this season, and the Giants don’t need to re-sign him with the emergence of Josh Osich as another lefty reliever this year.
I’m not sure what I’ll remember most about Affeldt: all the bizarre, freak injuries he’s suffered, or the 0.00 ERA in the 2012 and 2014 postseasons. From Game 6 at Philadelphia in the 2010 NLCS to Game 7 at Kansas City last year, his postseason performances have been immense.

How about when he got body-slammed by Kyle Farnsworth during that Royals/Tigers melee?
Slipknot37
Maybe he is just not into the sport anymore. He’s played it for a lot of years

Nonsense… That’s like saying you’re tired of women.
