Are any of those 2nd tier starters possibly linked to the Tigers better than whoever wins the job between Fulmer/Norris/Boyd/Greene/Lobstein?
If not, then why not trade JD Martinez for two more young pitchers with high upside and have seven, league minimum guys to choose 2 starting pitching slots from? The left overs can be relief pitchers in 2016 (or just hang out in AA/AAA).
Then sign Heyward to play Left Field.
Two young starters and Heyward will cost less in Average Annual Value than JD Martinez and two mid-tier older free agent starters and give more overall production, higher upside and lower risk.

As a tiger fan I sort of like this because JD’s value is probably at the highest possible coming off a monster year. Who would play the other corner spot however?

Same problem they would have if they simply sign two mediocre free agent starting pitchers and don’t sign a position corner Outfielder.
Only the problem will be in RF, not left. LF is like another CF in Comerica Park, so it would be an improvement.
Mr Pike
Verlander, Sanchez and two young pitchers. Who is the fifth starter?

As a tiger fan i kind of like this idea. JD’s value will never be higher than right now after a monster year. But who will play the other corner outfield position?
