I hope Hellickson can turn things around. He was too good with Tampa early to not have stuff to at least get him through latching on to a major team for a few more years. Moving to the bullpen may help him like it did Wade Davis. He was a good 4 or 5 guy in a rotation. But once he was placed in the bullpen in KC he really found his stride. So hopefully something similar happens with Hellickson if they do put him in the bullpen.

Hellickson has been a pretty consistent pitcher, he got a ton of help from his defense in 2011/2012

got to let them play the games… look at Arrieta… Came out of NO where, in terms of improvement. Can’t say it wont, but its unlikely IMO we see him get above a 15 win campaign. Certainly hoping though. Putting him in the bullpen could be an option as Rally Weimaraner mentioned. Will see, Im kinda of hoping they run Thompson, Nola, Erickhoff, and morgan out there early on, and bring up Efflin midway through. Just ride it and see what we got. Kilome, Munoz,Pinto could follow in 2017, and then you got this years potential top pick being a pitcher… Still can fill in FA… Lets give them a look, and see what we have. Also, if Giles gets traded away… if could fill a spot. Lots of moving parts to be worked out, I’d rather they don’t sign squat.. maybe Fisher, but I really want 4 SP spots for the propects.

Arrieta also threw as hard as he does now before, which is to say his slider is hard as Hellickson’s fastball. You can’t coach that. Hellickson gives you a lot less to work with so an Arrieta comp is not useful.

i’m sort of amused by the implication in the main post that the phillies need to sign a second veteran starter just because hellickson isn’t boring enough

The fact is they Do need to sign another starter that is capable of coming within 180-200 IP. Our bullpen will be really overused if we have pitchers that will be limited to pitch counts (Eickhoff and Nola) will not be over used as neither of them even have a full year in MLB yet. I’m not sold on Morgan yet. The Phillies still need to sign a #1 starter – Nola and Eickhoff should not be pressured to be our #1 and #2 Pitchers.
The Phillies should sign Zimmermann or Samardzija and then 1 more Pitcher on a 1 year deal (Latos – Beachy – Cahill or Norris)

Hellicksons advanced numbers weren’t too bad. He needs to figure out how to get away from the homer. But he is a #4 starter who has the potential to throw 200 innings which is actually damn valuable. The Phillies could even flip him if he produces.

Well, if Angelos is truly involved, then why hasn’t Chris Davis signed yet?
When Angelos decides to do something, he decides to do something.
So, I am thinking CD will re-sign with the O’s. I am not sure how I feel about it, but I will be down with it, if CD returns to the O’s. I think Buck and Dan like him a lot and have the influence with Angelos to bring all this to fruition
Rally Weimaraner
Davis has not signed yet because he is a Boras client looking for 150+ MM dollars.

I agree with Rally. Boras is shopping him hard. Hopefully the O’s can retain Chris. If they can’t, they at least need to finish a close second (or be perceived to finish a close second) in the negotiations. The next three or four seasons of fan support are on the line here. Since Angelos isn’t loved by Oriole fans, the club needs to stay involved with this negotiation to show they’re willing to spend the money to compete. I’m very hopeful that Davis will resign and it’ll be a good thing for Baltimore and the O’s.

I honestly think that there is almost no chance he signs back with the O’s.Too much interest in him and the bidding will go very high

I would feel real nervous if my team gave Davis anything north of 100 mill
stl_cards16 2
I’d be pretty excited if the Cardinals signed him for $100MM right now. Yes, he has some downside. But $100MM isn’t what it used to be and Davis brings a big upside. Sign me up for 5/$100MM in a heartbeat.
hooligan
He’s gonna cost a lot more than that. 6/$135MM is probably his floor, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get $155MM or more. I mean, look at the deal Shin-Soo Choo got a m couple years ago, there’s no way he’s accept less than that.
tac3
he is certainly going to get paid… Unless teams plug their holes through trades, Davis is going to make bank… Kinda wish the MLB had a year/term limit to their contracts… if players maxed out at 5 yrs, I could see a lot more activity from a lot of teams on more players. No one wants to go above 5 years, they are forced to go above 5. The Phillies would probably take a shot at him if he’d do a 4 year deal, but thats fanatasy world for now.

Could the Padres snag Papelbon?
Donnie B
Don’t think the Padres look to trade for a closer until they fix their main problems. They need a SS (Desmond or Cabrera) – SP to replace Kennedy – OF to replace Upton. (Unless Liriano or Renfroe are ready)
I actually think they would be better off selling off their most trade worthy players and start rebuilding again. They came off great selling high on Kimbrel.
They need to trade Shields, Ross, Cashner, Norris and Alonso.
