Speaking of Happ and with regards to Liriano, do you think theres any chance Happ pulls something like what Liriano did when staying with the pirates? Take a little bit less money to pitch in a place that he feels gives him the best chance to succeed?

Only being a rental pitcher makes the situation different, but working with Searage for more time would be a positive.

Buyer beware on Plouffe; take a look at his lifetime splits away from home park and he hits LH’ers much better than RH.
JT19
As a right-handed hitter he’s almost expected to hit lefties better than righties so that’s not too crazy. As long as he can hit well against lefties he’ll have some value as a platoon player.
socalbum
platoon yes, but Angels are looking for a full time third baseman

3.6 fWAR in 2014, 2.5 in 2015… Not sure where he’s a platoon guy and Freese wasn’t

I don’t understand why Giants fans are so adamant on trading Brandon Belt.
Anyone care to enlighten me?

His injury history might scare some from a long term deal. If there is no desire to resign him because of worries of his injury history then it makes the most sense to trade him now and get value for him. 1b is one of the more replaceable positions in the league (in my opinion) so its not like trading him would be super detrimental to the team in their hopes of contending.

tell that to the pirates who have not had a quality first basemen for a full season since adam laroche in.. ’09 i think?
JT19
They also haven’t had any problems competing the past few years nor has 1b been a black hole for them. I don’t know who else has played there for them the past few years (outside of Alvarez, Morse and Rodriguez) but my point was that you can throw almost any guy at 1b and you just hope they are able to hit well.

Injuries and streaks. He hit 15 of his 19 home runs during two two week stretches. There isn’t a metric for this, but if you removed those two weeks from his season numbers, he’d be a no power/poor contact first baseman with a remaining strikeout problem. Those streaks distort his triple slash line and cause offensive metrics to overvalue his power and contact skills.

A lot of Giants fans are in a big hurry to move Buster Posey to first base. As much as I like Andrew Susac, his bat isn’t good enough to replace Belt in the lineup, and I definitely don’t like Belt in LF for any length of time.
JoeyPankake
I don’t get it either. Don’t see them getting a young, controllable number 2/3 starter for him and Belt/Posey is going to be more productive than Posey/Susac. They should just let him play out the contract and see how Chris Shaw develops over the next 2 years. Posey is going to need to move off catcher eventually and having Belt blocking him long term would be ill advised.

I doubt Happ stays in Pittsburgh if he does it is a 1/2 year deal with vesting option or something along those lines.
The incentive for Happ to do it is to continue to work with a staff that helped up his game and prove it isn’t a fluke 10 games.
The drawback … if it is a fluke he misses his chance at probably the biggest pay day he can hope for at this point in his career.
I don’t think Liriano is a Fair comparison for salary as he had 2 almost full seasons of quality starting before he got a “big” contract from the Pirates vs Happ’s 10 games. (and those two years cost the pirates ~7M total but originally the contract i think was for 11M before his injury)
if i where the pirates i would probably go as high as 10M with a option of some sort for a second and maybe third year.

Belt doesn’t have “elite defense”. Look up his stats, he has been around average down to below average.
aff10
He rates very well at first base. Positive DRS and UZR every year in his career. Last year, he led first basemen in UZR/150, and ranked fourth in runs saved. For a first basemen, he is borderline elite defender
dstuart
Hahahaha I love stupid people.

I’d be highly disappointed with such an underwhelming package for Plouffe. They’d be better off keeping him then taking a couple of live relief arms with middling results. The Twins have plenty of velocity in the minors with Reed, Chargois, Burdi, Melotakis among others.
impactrookies
I honestly believe this plouffe trade talk is just mere speculation and those within the organization plan to keep him unless overwhelmed with a trade offer. I think the flexibility of keeping him is more attractive than a less than ideal return.

i think happ signs with blue jays 3 years 36 mill
