Just a general comment–these Off-season Outlooks are very good–especially for everyone not a fan of the particular team being covered.

Thanks — always nice to hear positive feedback. Glad you’re enjoying them!

Well done indeed. Thank you.

Prince Fielder’s contract actually has five years, $120 million remaining ($24 mil. annually), with Detroit picking up $6 million each year, putting the actual value at five years, $90 million.

Argh, thanks. I actually had it as 5/90 until the last revision, and then I figured it was better to include the total value while just noting the Tigers were on the hook for $6MM annually. But, I added an extra year by mistake when I re-entered the total. Fixing now.
GeauxRangers
I read an article on MLB.com that Profar has 2 option years left. Daniels said that he expects Profar to start off the season in AAA so I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have to make the club out of spring training this season.

Thanks, fixed. Think we must’ve mixed his situation up with Bundy.
seamaholic 2
Yeah Bundy is a tough one. Maybe DL to start with, but eventually he’s gonna begin his waiver-claim odyssey around the league, with everyone hoping he’ll be on their roster when he finally is healthy again.

It was remarkable the way Daniels and Bannister juggled things to win the west after a TERRIBLE April. The bullpen was awful but turned things around especially putting Tolleson into the role of closer and getting Kela, Dyson & Diekman. Wilhelmsen only makes that stronger and Freeman can be good in certain situations. I don’t know about resigning Lewis, who was either pretty good or just plain awful. He had a 2.70 ERA in the 17 games he won but his ERA in the other 16 games he started was dismal. Getting a RH hitter with some pop to spell Moreland or Hamilton is important. Josh can’t be counted on for more than 10-40 .240 the way things have gone the last few years. It’s also going to be interested how Texas does without Mike Maddux as pitching coach, who has done a great job with the staff the last few years in spite of being in a terrible pitchers park to play in. But with Darvish and Hamels, that’s as good a 1-2 combo as just about any team in MLB with the exception of the Dodgers –assuming they resign Grienke. If Doug Brocail (new pitching coach) can get Holland and Perez back on track and get Gonzales and/or Martinez mature—-who knows. But that’s what makes hot stove talk fun! 🙂

Just FYI, I think it was after the 2012 season that the Rangers “opened up” (for lack of better words) the concession area behind home plate. I don’t mean that they opened more concession stands. I mean that they literally removed the wall and created an open area for people to stand in and watch the game while eating their heart attack inducing Boom Sticks.
This reduced the “jet stream” that caused so many silly HR’s. Now the wind can go through the stadium instead of “jet streaming” back to RF. You can mess with the park factors and previous years here:
espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor/_/sort/HRFactor
It’s still an offensive stadium, but not what it was. Moreland and Fielder may have had 35+ HR’s if it was the same as it used to be.

Good take, Lance. However, I think that you are massively understating the job Bannister & Daniels did in 2015. As a would hazard to guess or even bet that no other team in MLB would have done as well without there bonifide #1 starter for an entire year.
daveinmp
Well not only would the Rangers want to see if Lucroy is catching, the Brewers would need to see either Gallo making better contact wherever he’s playing or Profar healthy because no way the Rangers are getting Lucroy without one of those two included in the deal and only if Gallo’s making strides or Profar’s shoulder is healthy. Otherwise, the Brewers will look elsewhere or extend Lucroy.
rodebaugh24
I can’t speak for the Brewers, but as a Brewers fan I could get my head around a deal that starts with Nomar Mazara. I know the Brewers are stacked at outfield options throughout their system but at this point in the rebuild I say take talent no mater the position.

Are you sure you’re in the right thread?

The Rangers infield is anything but set. Although you acknowledge the potential of moving Andrus (if possible), you fail to mention the Rangers plan to move moreland in looking for right-handed power. Fielder and Choo are also in play for trades, as both are aging, have bad contracts and Fielder cannot even play in the field. Look for the Rangers to attempt to move Prince to another AL team (while eating (no pun intended) a chunk of his contract), if they do not move moreland in an attempt to become more right-handed.
jimmyjack
Well they just won the division with their “anything but set” infield. It seems like you’re trying to create holes that don’t exist. The Rangers MIGHT unload one of Moreland, Choo, Prince. And yes, Prince can play 1B if needed.
An “anything but set” infield would be that of the Angels: no 3B, very weak 2B, questions around Pujols
vamosbravos
Granted Choo is being paid a king’s ransom, but why in the world would the Rangers want to trade there best player? Especially, since they are only one (two tops) player away from winning the whole ball of wax?
Lance
Fielder & Choo have huge contracts, so that would make them difficult to move. Plus, both were extremely valuable this past year in the Rangers winning the west. So….why even think of trying to trade them unless it would be for someone else’s bad contract?

I promise I’m not the guy that wants to turn our team into the Dodgers or Yankees, but this really is the time to sign Upton. JD has been interested in him since he was with Arizona. For a while now we’ve made it known that we want a righty power bat. Until two days ago, I thought “let’s just sign Byrd or Pearce to platoon with Hamilton for a year or two until Mazara is ready.” But then I remembered that Mazara is also a lefty.
Lefties = Prince, Moreland, Choo, Odor, Hamilton (eh, whatever)
Righties = Beltre, Delino, Elvis, Catcher
Aside from Beltre, all the power is coming from the left side. Delino, Elvis, and Catcher aren’t blowing anybody away in the AVG category either.
Choo can occasionally play CF when Delino needs rest or when we are facing a tough righty. Ham can take Choo’s spot in RF on those days. Then Ham can keep other players fresh and play some RF, LF, and DH. Just because the Rangers are paying Ham zero dollars this season does not mean he has to be an everyday OF. I like the guy, but he’s a head case and always hurt. He’s not reliable, and we shouldn’t act like he is. We need to be in “win now” mode, not “get Josh his 600 at bats because we’re nice” mode. If he catches fire then we will find a spot for him, and that will be a great problem to have.
We can cross the “trade Choo and/or Elvis” bridge after 2016. GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jimmyjack
Gallo is also a lefty bat.
Also, the FA market for OF righty bats is very limited next offseason.
I was thinking maybe a trade for Khris Davis, but he’s not an FA until 2020, so he may demand more in a trade than we’d be willing to give up.
JD PLEASE FIND IT IN YOUR HEART TO SIGN UPTON AND WIN A WS BEFORE THAT 100 YEAR OLD LADY BANGING ON HER DRUM IN LF DIES. She shook off 2010 and 2011. You owe it to her.
Los Calcetines Rojos
I wouldn’t be shocked to see us upgrade SP since there some question marks behind hamels and yu. I really like Quintana on the sox and I’d be okay with giving up Gallo, Cordell, and Van Hoosier being enough, if not more than enough, to grab him.
Besides him I’d be ecstatic about Lucroy, even Jason Castro with his visible limitations would be an upgrade
Kaylee12
Jeff banister deserves that Al manager of that year

And so he did.

JD please trade for Jose Fernandez
