Hello White Sox! Desmond would be a terrific fit on the South Side, as would signing Howie Kendrick to play 2B, then reach out to Billy Bean and work something out for Lawrie.

I think every team other than the Jays and Angels would be better off with Desmond. I would love to start the Braves rebuild with Desmond.

There’s a lot more teams than just those two that wouldn’t want him…. Indians.. Astros.. Detroit… Boston.. Cubs.. Dodgers.. Royals.. Texas.. O’s.. Just off the top of my head..

As a Nats fan I initially was incredulous that they did not make him a priority to resign. That was two years ago. Now I see a 5 year commitment as an albatross in years 3 through 5. I also believe that the Nats would have a better perspective on his health and trajectory.

If I remember right the extension the Nationals offered his 5 free agent years in the 7 year deal would have been like 90 million, he gambled and lost surprised he didn’t take the QO which is close to the AAV you are giving him. Hes been a pretty healthy guy.

I see the White Sox getting him as a gate way to Tim Anderson

I think 5/70 is very low. That’s $14M a year. J.A. Happ got almost that much. Shark, who was worse in almost every year ever, got $18M a year. I do agree that the demand for SP is currently higher than the demand for SS, which will hurt his value, but I don’t think it hurting it that much. He’s one year removed from being a top 3 SS in the game. I would expect somewhere between 5/85 and 5/100 ($17-20M annually).

It isnt about who was good before, it is about expectations going forward. Shark’s deal proves that. There are questions with Desmond.
That being said, any prediction is motivated in large part by the demand side of the equation.
I love Desmond, have seen him play a ton, think he’s a great guy, etc. He does have some upward potential, as I mentioned.
But there’s downside, too, in terms of his earning potential, b/c there are scenarios where ther aren’t any teams with much stomach for long-term deals and he has to decide between underwhelming long-term offers and a pillow contract..
YourDaddy
If all he gets is 5/$70 then he is a perfect fit for the Padres.

wow, 70 million bones, huh?…ouch. I think he gets a bit more than that. But it still looks like he shoulda’ taken that 100 million, when the Nats offered it. Nothin wrong with betting on yourself. But he’s never made enough contact, or gotten on base enough for him to assume that he would’ve gotten something considerably more than 100 million..
I could see him coming to SD, if he really is sincere about a move somewhere else on the diamond, in a year or two. End of the day, he’s still a VERY teammate kinda guy, and you never hear anyone speak ill of the guy. Every team needs guys like that. Lord knows, there are enough jerks to go around, starting with a couple of his former teammates…no need to mention names..people know who they are.

I’d be very surprised if he ended up getting 5/70, especially after the SP deals we’ve seen. Last year cost him but I’d be shocked if it was by that much. Even considering markets I’d be thrilled if A’s got him for that. My guess is 5/90 or 6/105. I’m wondering if some teams might view him as a 3B as well. There’s always surprise bidders especially when you have a guy with his ceiling. Did anyone think DBacks were signing Greinke after supposedly offering Cueto 6/120 and Greinke was deciding between SF/LA? I just don’t see anyone getting that much of a bargain, but I know some teams have their fingers crossed right now.

Rather the Pads have a left handed bat starting at short in 2016 but who knows what this team will end up looking like – 5yr, 70mill sounds like numbers Pads would be happy with, 4yr deal at 60mill

Never understood the love for this dude’s game in the first place, so between how bad he’s fallen off and the draft pick, 5/70 feels extremely generous to me. I won’t be surprised if someone gets desperate and throws the silly money at him, but it just screams disaster in the making.
